Sioux vs Gophers - Sioux invade the John...

Re: Sioux vs Gophers - Sioux invade the John...

First time in a long time I've been optimistic about a series against UND. Pretty happy with what I've seen from the Gophs so far this year, but I still expect some youthful mistakes along the way this weekend. Perhaps they'll prove me wrong. :D

I dunno, i've always just looked forward to this series. Never expecting more than a split even during the down years.. These series are unlike any others on the calendar, throw out rankings and records etc.

Patterson will be busy

I don't see the "Chippewa Falls VFW" team on either schedule. Am I missing something?

Re: Sioux vs Gophers - Sioux invade the John...

@ Dubbs, well the Gophs were the 1st team to play a "pro" game vs a Canadian team, maybe thats what the fighting nucks poster was talking about??

Re: Sioux vs Gophers - Sioux invade the John...

Does anyone even know who "Amesbury" and "Brock Hall" are?
IIRC, Brock Hall was the dorm where they housed the "big boned" girls when I went to UND. :p

Edit: Maybe it was Bek Hall. My bad.

It might have been the Chippewa Falls American Legion. Or maybe it was Bob's Hammer and Die from Duluth. I'm too lazy to go back and look it up.

My point was that no, UND has not typically "recognized" a club team who went out and played VFW's, American Legions, High School teams, or teams sponsored by a local hardware shop as part of the University's organized athletic team for purposes of record keeping. UND and Minnesota will just have to agree to disagree on this issue.

I just posted the schedules from the Gophers pre-NCAA championship seasons moron. I would hardly classify Michigan, Michigan Tech, Illinois, Yale, or Wisconsin as "high school teams" or "teams sponsored by a hardware shop".

Fail. Try again bozo.

And if you're talking about North Dakota's pre-1946 schedule, then that's your school's problem for not being able to field a competitive team worthy of playing real competition in college hockey's formative years.

from "Frozen Memories"

The 1928-1929 Eveleth Junior College hockey team, who was comprised entirely of Eveleth players, was the number one ranked college hockey team in the nation, ahead of teams such as Yale, Minnesota, Harvard, Princeton, and Dartmouth. So good was this junior college team that it was considered by the United States Olympic Committee to represent the United States in the 1928 Winter Olympic Games in Amsterdam, Holland. However, due to a lack of financial funding, Eveleth Junior College respectfully declined the invitation to serve as the US Olympic hockey team, and the United States consequently was not represented in the 1928 Winter Games.

And, the 1928 Olympics served as the World Championhsip for that year. So, making fun of small town hockey back in the day just shows how stupid and ignorant about hockey you are.

Cool stuff Happy. Thanks for posting. Didn't one of those small-town club teams on the range also have a tradition of being on the US Olympic team's pre-Olympic schedule up through the 1980's?

Re: Sioux vs Gophers - Sioux invade the John...

Part of the historic relationship between UMinn and UND began with two guys who might be considered founding fathers and who were Chicago Blackhawk teammates--Fido Purpur and John Mariucci.

I guess that was the last known friendship between a Gophper and a Sioux.

Smart move...

Yeah GPL is crazy this week as well, I love the new accounts that get created just for this series, always entertaining.

I'll humor you, and cut you some slack, because you're a newb. We've had this debate on this board for years.

What we were talking about is what Happy accurately described as the "early years" of college hockey, pre-NCAA. Minnesota has assiduously kept careful records of each and every event they played during those years. Other programs, including UND, have treated them as club teams with no coaching staffs, no real University endorsement, and nothing more than curious footnotes to the program's history.

As I said, the programs will simply have to agree to disagree on the significance of those years.

As for Minnesota's competition during those pre-NCAA years, yes they did play teams such as Michigan, Yale, etc...

But...
Dallas A.C.
Tulsa A.C.
M. Cooke and Sons (Duluth)
Hibbing Veterans
Chippewa Falls American Legion
White Bear
Fort Snelling
Ascensions

to name but a few are not exactly household names in college hockey.

Those sons were tough back then.
