Signs of the Apocalypse

Re: Signs of the Apocalypse

You definitely don't want to hit a moose. Usually a death sentence...not just for the moose. They are very top-heavy and their height is such that they usually fly right through the windshield. This is a particularly bad time of year for them. I know someone who just hit one a couple of weeks ago on Highway 11; thankfully only their car was destroyed.

We usually encounter quite a few whenever we drive back and forth across Hwy 69 through Algonguin Park in the summer time. You can get really close to them when they are grazing in the ditches by the side of the road and get great pictures during the day--or even more at dusk. But I always hate driving through the Park after dark because of the Night Danger of hitting them.

Although we also see deer all the time up north, believe it or not, the only deer I've ever hit was on Hwy 401 through the middle of Toronto at dawn a couple of years ago. Who woulda thought? Totalled the car.

Careful about getting out of the car if they are in rut...it might cost you your life...

Moose don't rut until Fall when the normal tourists are long gone and only the hunters are around (no wonder they are not as amenable to human company) ....in spring and summer however it's not uncommon at all to see a dozen or more cars parked by the side of the road and a crowd of families standing watching them eat their lunch/dinner a few feet away. :)

Apocalypse Alert!

The City of Glendale has agreed to cover the losses for the Desert Dogs next year up to a cap of $25M! Enough to keep the Coyotes in Phoenix.

Two Canadian teams lost out tonight... :(

Car v Moose with a lucky outcome for the driver

This was in yesterday's local paper. Coincidentally, this happened on Rt 11, but in NH.

Wow...However...Yesterday ?....The date in the pictures is from 2003.

I'd speculate that the camera owner didn't set the date. After not using those functions in my camera for a while, I have a heckofa time changing settings without the manual.

Did not mean to question the pictures, a few good ones here:

"Just about every day in Northern Ontario, there is an accident involving a moose. When you get into an accident with a moose, you might as well drive into a brick wall. Moose in Ontario can get over 1500 pounds and a fender-bender is not the result, death or extreme injury for the occupants of the car is the result."

"Over the 12-year period, 4,813 wildlife accidents resulted in personal injury and 57 human fatalities"

Below is what is left after a baby Moose (calf) was hit by a car. I have pictures of other accidents but they are just too gory to show

A few years ago, I left for the gym at just before sunrise, and noticed some movement in the field to the side of my driveway. I thought the horses across the street got loose, but it turned out to be a mother moose and her calf. She drew her ears back and gave me a look that let me know I didn't need a closer veiw!
