Signs of the Apocalypse

Re: Signs of the Apocalypse

2 zip Flyers...

Leighton will have to carry the mail. That's one of the 8 different goalies the Flyers have had this year.

Must admit the boy's are up against it now. The last team to take four straight was in 75' when I think the Islanders stormed back to beat somebody...maybe St Louis?

Flyers in 7....ya gotta believe...

Hab's are having thier way so far. Unbelievable...

I think it was against Pittsburgh. Before that, Toronto did it in the Stanley Cup finals, I think in 1940.

Bruins are getting the doors blown off them right now. Panic is going to set into Boston tomorrow...

Re: Signs of the Apocalypse

Bemidji High School uniform. George was a UND recruit. I believe the venue is the old St. Paul Civic Center...state tournament photo most likely.

George had just scored on the Bloomington Jefferson Jags apparently.

All correct, Brooky!

Re: Signs of the Apocalypse

Thanks for filling in the blanks but what's up with the clear boards? Was this common in the US rinks in the day? How did they mangae to pick up the puck coming off the boards? I can't say I've ever seen these types of boards anywhere! Curious...

Well he carried the mail all the way to a shutout. Bruins looked disorganized today. Did they spend to much time watching the unveiling of the Orr statue ?.

The Pens - Habs series is much better to watch. Exciting action every game out. Same tonight. That one is going to seven.

The St. Paul Civic Center (which housed the Fighting Saints of the old WHA league) was built with the glass boards. The main benefit was supposedly to allow fans see the puck better along the boards. Not exactly a sign of the apocalypse, but obviously the fad was short-lived...here's a little history for you:

Thanks, I can see why it didn't catch on.

Nice to see the old River Center housed some of the brightest musicians of our time, Rolling Stones, Bowie, Queen and even the not so brightest...Springsteen. :)

Re: Signs of the Apocalypse

Of course we all know that Billy Mosienko of the Chicago Blackhawks scored the 3 fastest goals in the NHL on March 23rd, 1952 getting the natural hat trick in 21 seconds against New York Rangers netminder Lorne Anderson. A guy by the name of Gus Bodnar recorded the fastest 3 assists as he had the helper on each of Mosie's goals.

The fastest three goal natural hat trick in the Stanley Cup playoff's still stands although Johan "The Mule" Franzen came close the other night by scoring three straight in 3:26 missing the mark by :02 seconds. Anybody know who holds the record at 3 goals in 3:24?

All part of the plan....they celebrated the 40th anniversary with a 4-0 result.

Tim Kerr of the Flyers, back in the 80's.

BTW..If the Bruins and the Habs and up meeting it will be the most frequently contested playoff series matchup by far. It would be the 33rd time, and the Habs have a big edge, with a 24-8 mark. Back in the 70's and 80's they won like 15 or 16 series in a row against the Bruins before finally falling to them in the early 90 cup runs by the Bruins with the Cammer. Go Habs.

Excellant OnMAA, on April 13, 1985....you must have known it would be a Flyer. Kerr also holds the record for the fastest 4 goals in 8:16.

Bam Bam Cam made everyone pay until Ulf Samuelsson ended his career with the infamous cheap shot at his knee. Ulf the most hated man in hockey!

Yup...Neely and Orr. Two Bruins who's careers were cut way too short on knee injuries....I still remember those Flyers of the 80's. 35 game unbeaten string with captain Clarke, Prop the rookie, and Quinn the general. They fell on the infamous Nystrom goal in the final in OT. Later on the next general was Iron Mike Keenan of SLU fame, with Hextall the crazy goaler and the aforementioned Kerr. They were never able to solve the Oilers.

BTW...Yesterday was the first time since the days of the Broad Street Bullies (75/76) that the Flyers won a playoff game in Boston.

I was at an event where Quinn was speaking to a bunch of hockey playing kids and parents about the merits of communication. He told the story of how at about game 32 of that streak they were playing Pittsburgh down by a goal with a buck forty five left in the third. Quinn looked down the bench and found his biggest guy, Moose Dupont and told Moose he was going to pull the goalie and that he should go directly to the front of the net. Play started in the Pittsburgh zone, there was a scramble in the corner, the puck went out to the D for the point shot...but Moose was no where to be seen. Quinn looked down and there was Moose standing at the hash marks guarding the Flyer net! Quinn got his point across that night...taking the miscommunication blame because he wasn't clear with Moose on what net he wanted him to go directly to.

BTW the Flyers did score and tied the game. In those days a tie was a tie and the winning streak managed to live for another day.

LMAO..That is funny...

...Definition of a "Moose on the Loose" :D ......a term we use often around here....

....A town nearby here is actually called "Moose Creek", and there are Moose in our area. The other day a van hit one of them, luckily no human casualties, but the Moose had to be terminated (broken legs). I encountered one once while on the road at night. Scared the bejeezuz out of me. Luckily no contact was made.

Not to mention ``Moose Factory``, a dot of a town on a 1300 acre island at the mouth of the Moose River. They don`t make Mooses there... but they have one native son from this remote village that made the NHL. Jonathan Cheechoo, formerly of the San Jose Sharks and more recently as an Ottawa Senator, is the only Moose Cree First Nation to ever play in the NHL and win the scoring title. Cheechoo won the Maurice `Rocket`Richard trophy in 05-06 for most goals in a season with 56.

When my brother lived near Fairbanks, AK he hit a large moose once when driving on the highway at night. It came out of the woods real fast, he said, and there wasn't anything he could do to avoid the collision. What was impressive is that he was driving his heavy duty truck, a Dodge RamCharger with the big diesel engine, and after getting hit the moose was still able to get up and lumber back into the woods. The damage to his truck, meanwhile, came to around $4,000...after that he always referred to that truck as his "MooseCharger". <g>

You definitely don't want to hit a moose. Usually a death sentence...not just for the moose. They are very top-heavy and their height is such that they usually fly right through the windshield. This is a particularly bad time of year for them. I know someone who just hit one a couple of weeks ago on Highway 11; thankfully only their car was destroyed.

We usually encounter quite a few whenever we drive back and forth across Hwy 69 through Algonguin Park in the summer time. You can get really close to them when they are grazing in the ditches by the side of the road and get great pictures during the day--or even more at dusk. But I always hate driving through the Park after dark because of the Night Danger of hitting them.

Although we also see deer all the time up north, believe it or not, the only deer I've ever hit was on Hwy 401 through the middle of Toronto at dawn a couple of years ago. Who woulda thought? Totalled the car.
