Shillelagh Tournament Thread (BU, Brown, Notre Dame, Minnesota St)

Re: Shillelagh Tournament Thread (BU, Brown, Notre Dame, Minnesota St)

it IS notre dame's tournament. why any different that the gophs always playing the late game?

And besides, regardless of whether its a night game or not, it's still a consolation game. So I can't imagine it will be well-attended. And, I would argue, playing on a Sunday night might be worse than playing during the day because tomorrow is a work/school day, so you lose the family demographic. Basically, the worst case scenario in terms of generating interest and revenue was Brown and Minnesota State winning in the first round, and that situation has played out, to the dismay of anyone hoping to profit from this tournament. I'm certainly glad Brown won, but I do realize that us winning the first game was bad for the fiscal success of the tournament.

i recall reading 3580 total attendence for yesterday. had to be sparse in the bldg. i'm sure it'll be the same today.

OSU's Lefty McFadden tourney was also the same setup. Regardless of how the Buckeyes did, they played the night game.

Attendance has always been sparse, but I believe this weekend's games were the best attended of the 3 (not counting what it may look like today). 3500 means the place was more than 1/3 full. At least the last 2 tourneys have had free parking. The first one here you had to pay $20/day to park in a nearly empty parking lot. Parking was more than the price of the ticket. While I always enjoy the hockey, I loathe this place. Middle of BFE with the announcer from Hell. Should the tourney continue, it will be played at ND's new arena, although I have heard nothing about its future.

BU is terrible. Bring on the Irish!

A few fun things about the tournament and the rink...

1. Minnesota St wins, they get their trophy and their banner to affix to the tournament banner, and the players have to affix it. No one from the tournament or the arena to help.

2. While introducing the Notre Dame players, Shipping Up to Boston is playing. I know it's Irish sounding music, but really?

3. During the anthem, the PA announcer, or whoever is in charge of the canned music did something music started playing (not the amthem) while she was singing. Kudos to her for not missing a beat.

Congrats to Minnesota St on their title. They played two solid games.

There's also been no one around to help with press conferences. They were supposed to be in the media room, but that was still set up for dinner after yesterday's games, so we just had to do them in the hall wherever we could find room because no one was around to direct us anywhere else.

They broke the building!! Courtnall and a Notre Dame player crash into the glass and it shatters. Does this place even have extra panels?

Next update from Chicago: WTH?!? The sprinkler system has engaged! We're all evacuating!

At least Papelbon didn't come out ....

What a rough tournament for BU. And letting go of that final game, yikes.

ND won the shootout, ericredaxe.

Re: Shillelagh Tournament Thread (BU, Brown, Notre Dame, Minnesota St)

Thanks... I guess I should have asked... why the shootout? I didn't realize college hockey was doing those this year? Is that something unique to the Shilleagh tournament?

Re: Shillelagh Tournament Thread (BU, Brown, Notre Dame, Minnesota St)

Yeah, I think it was tournament specific. I think it was just to determine 3rd place. According to the Boston Hockey blog guys, the shootout loss won't count against BU's pairwise replacement (PWR) calculation, but I might have that wrong.

Shootouts never count nationally, even in conference games that use a shootout. This shootout was only for 3rd place seeding.

BU won't have to worry about PWR anyway. That ship has sailed (and been burned).

I like that you quoted BurnTheBoats and talked about a boat burning. That's neat.

Haha. There's a lot of season left. We're down but not out.

Yet.

I forgot that the last 2-2.5 months of the season were left out of the PWR, thank you for enlightening me.
