Shannon Miller out at UMD?

Re: Shannon Miller out at UMD?

More often than not it is to given an appearance of transparency and involvement from all levels. I'm sure the players will not do any interviewing. They are more likely to be on the comittee to provide input into what the players are looking for in a coach, or what they like to see improved (in general).

Last time one of our D's was playing on a varsity team where there was a coaching change, there was an upcoming senior player on the committee. (This was D1, a few years back now)

Not hockey, but many, MANY years ago when I was in school, I and 2 other undergraduate students were asked to sit on the search committee for the next Dean of our professional school. We individually interviewed each of the 5 candidates for 45 minutes and sat in the evaluation meetings for each candidate with the whole committee. I think the school took seriously the viewpoints of the students in that search (it wasn't the only consideration of course) and in fact I seem to remember that one of the candidates that the school admin folks liked best was ultimately disqualified because of significant concerns expressed by the 3 student committee members around their extreme focus on faculty and graduate student research and distinct and glaring lack of interest in the undergraduate population. Depending on the school, student search committee members can be meaningful and beneficial participants in the process.

Re: Shannon Miller out at UMD?

2 words - Jenny Potter. She turned around Trinity and got them to their first NESCAC championship and second NCAA berth (have heard though that the players are not big fans and that she had to meet with the administration last season to address player and parent complaints about her - winning has a way of relieving these tensions).

This should not be overlooked.

The UMD connection is an easy one to make, the playing resume is without compare, but the right fit??? IMHO, no.

I would venture to guess that the homework has been done and she will get an interview out of respect, but the school will go a different direction.

Nor should it be taken as an automatic disqualifier. A school like Trinity that relies primarily on its academic rather than athletic reputation is likely to be MUCH more considerate of student and player complaints than a school like UMD that has a D1 program and is more intent on being successful. The threshold for administrative intervention is almost certainly lower at Trinity. And I don't know what the specific issues were with Potter that led to the meeting - they could have had the meeting and decided that it wasn't a valid complaint or issue (although folks I know there still aren't huge fans of hers). Obviously whatever it was has been corrected to the point where she is still there and the team are NESCAC champions, so she can apparently take input and course correct. That's a skill and qualification right there - "able to take administration input/direction and adjust behavior to meet school guidelines".

Re: Shannon Miller out at UMD?

so what other women might be available?
UW's Friesen?
UM's Muzerall?
BC's Kennedy?
????
is there a another former Bulldog that isn't tainted?
an alumni of the UMD men's program?
someone else?

A couple of years ago I heard Trinity was considered the party school of the NESCAC. If Potter came in and tried to change that type of culture to a higher level culture and the players didn't want to change they would have resisted and found a way to complain about her because that's what student-athletes do today. They feel entitled to be in charge of something they know nothing about, how to run a competitive hockey program. I think there are a lot of D-III athletes that are less inclined to adapt well or even want a D-I mindset and approach. When kids don't like something they complain when instead they should leave the program because they don't fit into the new coach's philosophy. She might not be a "player's coach" but obviously something's working this year over last year. They have the NECSAC crown to show for it.

Caroline Ouellette...Bret Hull?

But Hull was known to bust up furniture in his hotel room when he was on Team USA so that might not work for Black and Berlo.

WHy is that? What does she have/not have that makes her wrong for UMD? I my still not be over her leaving MN for UMD :) but she was a heck of a player, smart & skilled and if she has shown herself to be a capable coach what makes her the wrong choice? Just wondering.

Re: Shannon Miller out at UMD?

Carla MacLeod?

I have zero inside information, but I think Jackie MacMillan is the more likely former Badger candidate. Originally being from Minnesota and currently coaching in Duluth at St. Scholastica have to be major points for her.

Are we achieving critical mass yet?

So is already being in Duluth a major hiring criteria - has UMD gotten to the point financially where they can't pay relocation? If so, then the program is on the autobahn to nowhere.....

MacMillan has a pretty solid record of taking weak and/or start-up D3 programs and making them competitive and she should be proud of that. But I would think that UMD has slightly higher aspirations than that, liking actually winning WCHA and NCAA championships again. They are already competitive. Nowhere in her bio on the St. Scholastica website does it mention that any team she has coached has actually ever won anything of significance - just that they got a lot better. This doesn't seem like the right fit to me.

As a follow-on, they've known since Jan 1 or so that they need a new coach, so I'm thinking that they already have a well-developed short list of candidates. If they are starting from scratch at this point then frankly the AD and his team are bad at what they do and really don't care who the coach is....

Never said she was a leading contender or should absolutuely be hired by UMD. I was responding to a post that suggested Carla McLeod and I thought MacMillan would be the best candidate from the former Badger standpoint.

The relevant point would be that she is someone who is already open to living in Duluth. I'm sure there are some attractive candidates coaching Eastern teams who love where they live and aren't that interested in pulling up stakes and heading halfway across the country.

None at all, completely agree with you. I also believe Coach Potter would do an outstanding job at UMD. If I'm making the decision it's a no brainer to go after Potter.[TE]you are the first person I hear say that. None of the girls who've experience Potter liked her so little chance she's going to get this primo job. Courtney Kennedy YES Joel Johnson YES those are the names that should surface for this job. As for all the Miller talk.. Great coach that got all she wanted in the early years and never was questioned. Then change of boss and all of a sudden she was being held accountable and she didn't like it. When you always get what you want and questions are never asked and then one day a new boss asks hmmm don't like it much. It's like she is throwing a child temper tantrum and so she responds by saying they are all against her. hey lady Clarkson beat the U of M and they have less $$ than you get so stop saying you need U of W and UM $$ you are not a big football/basketball revenue school so try to do more with less like CLARKSON did and win a NCAA championship. That's a true mark of a champion.

I like this. A dose of reality and truth. There's nothing quite like it.

Kennedy would seem to be somebody that has the necessary experience/ proven track record and could be a leading candidate, but perhaps not even this seasons massive snowfall is enough to get her to leave beantown and return to comparatively balmy MN

Re: Shannon Miller out at UMD?

Caroline Ouellette...?

so she'd leave a place where she is a national hero and has a successful career for a place she is hardly known with a big gamble she might be looking for another job in 4-5 years?
