Shannon Miller out at UMD?

Re: Shannon Miller out at UMD?

I'll be the first to admit I really don't follow women's hockey, and the first I remember hearing of all this was the story in the Star Trib, but isn't what happened to Miller exactly what happened to George Gwozdecky at DU? High profile, long time coach of a program. Previous national championships. High pay, especially relative to the institution where they were coaching. Recent unmet performance expectations (DU went out in the first round something like 5 of George's last 6 seasons). Coach assumed everything was going to go along smoothly and a new contract would be offered, and then poof, the school goes another direction.

If I'm Miller, I say fine. Adios. Mankato just had a job that opened up. If I'm as great a coach as I think I am, I'll have no problem finding another spot.

In any industry, at some point, certain employees, coaches and players become "radioactive" - in other words, no one wants to go near them no matter how good they may be.

Re: Shannon Miller out at UMD?

au contraire

you have that backwards, she has almost no credibility with reasonably intelligent people (those that have looked at the facts), it is the casual onlookers who have accepted Miller's actions because they are ignorant of the facts, UMD's credibilty has gone up as time has gone on

You're reading more into what I said than what I said.

I wasn't claiming that her credibility increased. I was simply claiming that because of her lack of willingness to go along with the politically correct story that UMD's credibility decreased as a result of the increased scrutiny that was directed at their reasoning which didn't have enough cover to begin with. Proof of that was simply Black's later statements which contradicted his and Berlo's initial statement.

There is a difference between the two which is one of the reasons why I said a few days ago Berlo/Black -1 - Miller 0. Using your logic I should have ascribed a positive number to Miller and the zero to Berlo/Black. But as I said there's a difference between the two.

This is not complicated stuff.

And a "Highly Competitive Salary"

I read that as "you will not be the highest paid coach in women's hockey, but you won't need to flip burgers at Hardees during the off-season either!"

Of course the next coach won't be the highest paid coach in women's hockey, they haven't earned it yet. You must of failed to see that Berlo said it would be more than the Mankato, Bemidji and SCSU coaches. I don't even think any D-3 coaches need to flip burgers during the off-season.
So I guess I don't get what you mean by that statement.

Re: Shannon Miller out at UMD?

Did Sandelin move into Miller's office yet?

It will be interesting to see if ALL candidates are considered or if they will hire the best female candidate to cover their a**. Good luck to everyone involved in the process!

I dunno. Some coaches salaries are not all that great. Not that long ago ( couple of years) one D1 womens head coach salary was $45K. That is a pittance considering the work and time investment requirements that come with the job.

2 words - Jenny Potter. She turned around Trinity and got them to their first NESCAC championship and second NCAA berth (have heard though that the players are not big fans and that she had to meet with the administration last season to address player and parent complaints about her - winning has a way of relieving these tensions).

Re: Shannon Miller out at UMD?

Those two words were the rumor on the street a couple of months ago, but I have no idea if that rumor was accurate or if she's still considered the front-runner.

A couple of months ago she was a coach at a middling NESCAC school. Now she is the coach of the NESCAC champions and a NCAA tournament team. Stock should have only risen......

Re: Shannon Miller out at UMD?

I would think that UMD will be looking to hire someone who has good people skills in addition to good coaching skills.

2nd biggest understatement of the year

I'd think Potter would be a lock to get an interview for the job

Re: Shannon Miller out at UMD?

So, the players are picking the coach! Hmmmm!

2 out of 10 spots. I actually applaud the school for including them. Once you leave the school (former players and alumni), or have been in administration, your viewpoint changes. Having a few hockey people on the search committee and having a few players on the committee. Seems to kill two birds with one stone. Both valuable viewpoints, that only make up 20% of the committee.

That would be a prudent thing to do for any Coach hiring at any level.

"The ability to communicate with each player as an individual is the most important aspect of coaching"...Straight from the mouth of the most esteemed coach in the game at some coaches conference when asked the question...Scotty Bowman.

More often than not it is to given an appearance of transparency and involvement from all levels. I'm sure the players will not do any interviewing. They are more likely to be on the comittee to provide input into what the players are looking for in a coach, or what they like to see improved (in general).

Last time one of our D's was playing on a varsity team where there was a coaching change, there was an upcoming senior player on the committee. (This was D1, a few years back now)
