Re: Setting Sail - Oswego State Lakers 2010-2011 Season Thread

Did Gosek play the same lines as in the first half of the year or is he still changing the lines? I guess the bigger question for me is how did the defence look?? Did they make their usual 5-8 give aways up the middle?
Oswego '89

He had Mather, Fox and Laganiere. Boots, Moodie and Whitelaw. Brown, Singleton and Titanic and Kelly, Bremner and Badham. Defensive pairs were Mallaro and Glichrist, Huinink and Carr and Van Boxmeer and McConney. The offense created a lot of chances just one too many passes on a lot of them instead of taking the open shot.

Huinink had a couple of terrible give aways one of which Jones made a great save on the breakaway. Other than that not a lot of egregious mistakes by the defense and for the second straight game they managed to stay out of the penalty box which is a major plus.

I felt bad for him - brought in to play in a tough situation, little preparation. Seemed very tentative in warm ups, played ok in first period but faded badly after that. Glove hand seems very slow. Now that Jones has shown that he is a more than adequate backup I don't think we will see Hare again. Sounds like Beckwith will be back in time for the second half of the SUNY schedule so things are looking up.

wow, thnks for the info, D1 trans and hell b the #3 netminder, interesting.......good to here paul will be back soon, but as you stated, jones got his feet wet,and looked pretty good, I hope hare will stay with it 3 goalies are needed never know he may get comfortable and gain some confidence, he has to have skill if he went D1....... .side note Platts is playing well....ps.....is pete sears still working with the goalies if so this will help Hare

Re: Setting Sail - Oswego State Lakers 2010-2011 Season Thread

Hare's biggest issue right now is confidence and Jones playing so well is not going to help it. He was shelled a few times near the end of his tenure at Niagara and fell out of favor with the coach. He came to Oswego and was put right into the first game and the team played awful in front of him and he got worse as the game wore on. He looked a little better in the last two warmups but he gives up a lot of goals blocker side and you can see that it bothers him every time it happens.

I am fairly certain Jones will start against Curry with Beckwith maybe on the bench but with him not dressing last night that seems a bit unlikely.

As for the question on Mr. Sears, I haven't seen him at a game in a while so I don't know if he is still working with the goalies or not.

As for Pete Sears I believe he and his wife go south for the winter (can you imagine wanting to leave Oswego this time of year!)
Usually is gone by December but I am sure he stays in contact with Gosek. Think probably most of his work is pre-season and early practices.

Anyone have any positive comments on Skidmore, 2-0 loss seems like a solid effort by the Thoroughbreds, even if the Lakers had an off-night?

They got a lot of sticks in the shooting and passing lanes and they put together a couple of solid checks. They kept the front of the net pretty clean and Colin Bessey made a bunch of real good saves. Offensively they didn't really sustain a lot of pressure all night long and a lot of their shots were from outside. They were johnny on the spot on Oswego's turnovers but were only close to scoring once, when Jones made a nice save on the deke. They gave up a bunch of odd man rushes, Whitelaw, Boots and Moodie had three on one shift and failed to score. Both Oswego goals were on oddman rushes, a 3 on 0 and a virtual breakaway by Bremner.

Skidmore looks like a team that is tough to blowout but not team that will win a lot of games. With some added offensive prowess they could start winning some games.

Re: Setting Sail - Oswego State Lakers 2010-2011 Season Thread

Very interesting game tonight. Crowd was in shock when Hare got the start in goal. Would be interesting to hear the reason why but obviously Gosek is a genius! Team played much better defense in front of him, he only had a couple of tough saves - what a redemption! Offense had many chances (outshot Curry 40-17) but just had that span in the second period when they could put it in the net. Still, nice week - two victories - two shutouts. When is the last time the Lakers had consecutive zeros on the board?

Re: Setting Sail - Oswego State Lakers 2010-2011 Season Thread

I posted this in the score update thread but I figured I might as well put it here also.

I think Oswego could have had a shooter tutor in net tonight and still got a shutout. The defense didn't commit a single turnover directly in front of the net and Curry never had a guy in front of Hare where there wasn't at least two Laker's right there with him. A lot of real good decisions were made with the puck which hasn't been the norm lately.

Oswego looked really lazy in the first period, especially in the neutral zone but they still managed a bunch of shots that Dawson handled. In the second they turned up the wick and really started to dominate before Moodie broke through on the power play after getting three whacks at it. The second goal was an absolutely beautiful shot by Ian Boots, top shelf on a 2 on 1 with John Whitelaw. Third goal was a beauty as well, Dan Bremner took a perfect pass from Owen Kelly broke in short handed, got hauled down and from his knees passed it to Kelly who deked around Dawson and put it in the net.

Hare made a bid for an empty netter but it got blocked by Hank Van Boxmeer who skated right in front of him for no reason and almost knocked it back into the net. Ice presence of some guys in certain situations still leaves a lot to be desired. All in all though a real confidence booster for Andrew after he got pulled in his first start with Oswego and a couple of times with Niagara as well.

They started to pull the trigger a lot more than they have been and if they can start hitting the target then the pressure on the D and Goalies will be eased up a little.

Curry had some decent speed but Oswego took that away from them and they had a really hard time generating anything in the offensive zone. Dawson made a lot of saves but he really didn't look that good in net, a lot of pucks were dropped and kicked right out in front but Oswego still is having a hard time moving in for the rebounds. Moodie hit him twice with a shot and scored on the third one and he never really reacted to any of them.

The officiating was awful as usual missing a bunch of obvious penalties both ways and then calling some real stinkers, like the Huinink tripping penalty near the end when he left his feet to block a shot which was fanned on, and then the Curry player skated right into him.

Re: Setting Sail - Oswego State Lakers 2010-2011 Season Thread

I agree with most of what you wrote. The D did play a lot better and seeing Hank and Anderson as a pair will pay off in the long run. Ed is still jungling his lines for I don't think you saw the same line 3 time together in the same period. You are correct everyone thought Paulie would start but I was told he will the next game. Besides having Pete Sears as a goalie caoch they also neet a shooting coach. They had 4-6 nice 1-1 or 2-1 and they just blew it terribly. As for the 3 stars last night when ever the goalie get a shut out they are the number 1 not 3. Over all a nice win for the lakers and good constant D for the whole game with is nice to see.

But if the goaltender didn't have to make many tough saves or many saves at all why should they be #1, especially if the defense played as well as it did from reading everyone's comments. Yes they definitely need to be in the stars of the game but I completely disagree that they need to be #1 especially if the game wasn't in doubt and they didn't have to do a whole lot to get the shutout.

Re: Setting Sail - Oswego State Lakers 2010-2011 Season Thread

I don't understand the line juggling at all. No matter what four combination's of lines he puts on the ice, they all create chances they are just not scoring a lot of goals. They are just walking right in on the goalie and stuffing it into his pads or right into his chest, or firing it over the net.

The Anderson, Van Boxmeer pairing is clearly the best defensive pairing the team has right now but they haven't been together a ton with Anderson sitting a lot.

The idea of making a goalie first star just because he didn't get scored on has always annoyed me. Honestly I thought Boots, Bremner and Kelly were Oswego's three stars of the game. Curry had six power plays and I bet they didn't have six total shots on the man advantage and most of that can be attributed to Bremner and Kelly. Not to mention the great work they did on the short handed goal. Bremner was one of the three stars which was good to see a guy rewarded for his defensive efforts as much as his offense.

Re: Setting Sail - Oswego State Lakers 2010-2011 Season Thread

Did anybody mention the ice factor over the last two games on here? I don't think I saw it but the ice surface was pretty rough after the compressor went down on New Year's Day. The sensor that is supposed to alarm the staff was on the same circuit and as you could guess blew as well. So, they had no idea until the next day after the holiday of the problem with the ice. By then I heard it was a real mess, if I remember correctly from being told by a credible source that there was a pond of water on the "ice" on Jan. 2nd. Hopefully they will have enough time over the next two weeks with no hockey played on that ice surface to fix things.

I don't know where you heard this from, but from what I have heard he has not even hit the ice yet. I would find it hard to imagine he would be good enough to insert into the lineup when SUNYAC play opens up after only a week or so of ice time after six weeks off. I think the best we can hope for is that he is in for one of the two games and give Jones the other game.
