Re: Setting Sail - Oswego State Lakers 2010-2011 Season Thread

Another point I wanted to touch on is Ian Boots. That kid can flat out play and I don't think we have seen how good he really can be. He can stick handle in a phone booth but his decision making needs to get a little better. He seems to try to make the harder play when pushed into a corner to sometimes to the detriment of the team. He also has a bit of a habit of hanging on to it too long.

The most important thing is, they are now three points up on Buffalo State and Geneseo in the SUNYAC with Genny coming up in a few weeks. If they take care of business in the last two conference games of the semester, it definitely puts them in the drivers seat for another regular season title.

Boots maneuvered his way through the defense like a champ: it was impossible not to be impressed with how he weaved through multiple Mustangs, changing the puck, leaving it be for a split second, or just banking off defenders, and STILL getting away with possession. Wouldn't you say this was one of the finest examples of his skill set (no doubt with more to come)?

Geneseo is the key this year - the team that was locked out of the playoffs and knocked off OSU's perfect conference season in style. It will be a splendid game.:D

If anyone interested, Rochester plays the Crunch today at 5pm on Time Warner 13.

He was absolutely impressive with his stickhandling last night. My only issue with his play last night was hanging on to it a little too long. He had a couple of chances to get it to the point during that prolonged period of offensive zone pressure but instead he stickhandled it out of the zone ending the pressure. If he can eliminate that kind of thing from his game he will be the best player on the ice in any game he plays.

Re: Setting Sail - Oswego State Lakers 2010-2011 Season Thread

Did they drop all the way to #4 after the Fredonia loss?

I thought they were still #1 or #2.

I could be wrong as I can not seem to find a regional ranking from 2007...USCHO had them at #5 but NCAA Rankings are MIA, or at least I can't find them.

I did happen to have a bracket from 2007 though.

St. Norbert was the 1 seed from the west while I believe Manhattanville was the 1 seed from the east but overall I would guess that St. Norbet was 3rd behind Manhattenville (1), Mass-Dart (2), then St. Norbert (3) followed by Oswego (4). Unless they were number 3, I doubt they were 1 or 2 based on Manhattanville and Mass-Dart's records. But again, I'm just looking at records.

Re: Setting Sail - Oswego State Lakers 2010-2011 Season Thread

I thought 2007 was the year Dartmouth was the one seed but had to travel to Middlebury because they messed up the process for getting to host an NCAA tournament game.

Quite possibly...Fredonia got the auto bid in with a 15-9-4 record and played at Middlebury who went on to beat Fredonia. Mass Dart was 25-2-1 while Manhattanville was 20-1-5. So actually now that you mention it and I looked closer, it would make sense that Mass-Dart was the 1 seed in the east that year cause they played the winner from the first round...but seeding usually does not make up the way the bracket is played out ( yay for travel distances  ).

Oswego played Norwich and Manhattenville played Babson, both predetermined in the quarters...St. Norbert and Mass-Dart waited for the winner of the first round play which in the end was Bethel and Middlebury.

Watching the Amerks game. Selleck put an excellent legal hit on a Crunch player, then subsequently gets in a fight with a player that was sticking up for his teammate on the legitimate hit. Selleck gets called for charging, the reffing doesn't change much for this kid.

Re: Setting Sail - Oswego State Lakers 2010-2011 Season Thread

'scuse me while I blow the dust off of this thread - it's a long weekend for Lakers fans, unless you can tune in to our rivals and their efforts in the tourneys.

I had the somewhat painful pleasure of seeing the Amerks in Rochester last night. The team was extremely listless and ineffective at moving the puck and getting quality chances all night - they should have lost 3-1 had it not been for an early wild shot from mid ice that confused the hell out of the Toronto goaltender. Selleck got in his fair share of hits and scuffles, but no outright fights (which was somewhat of a disappointment, since one cannot view fights at a college hockey game).

Currently, the Amerks are the cellar-dwellers of their division, and the team is almost completely bereft of veterans and leadership. One game doth not make a season, but I don't see them going anywhere this season. Since their parent club chose not to re-up the affiliation agreement that ends this year, attendance is disgusting, and the quality of play is lacking terribly, I'm tempted to echo a comment from a Rochester sportswriter that the Amerks may be history soon. Unless another NHL team is desperate enough to try and revive this squad, Rochester may lose AHL play.

Long of the short of it, this brings me to Selleck - if per chance he is not called up to the Panthers by season's end, and the Amerks perish...does the man have an option to return to Oswego and continue playing out until graduation? I didn't know if this was a valid possibility or not, but if things weren't working out so good for him in the AHL, and Oswego strung together another decent season - is it possible that Selleck could become a Laker again?

I could be wrong because I'm not sure the exact deal that Selleck had but I'm pretty sure that once you agree to accept money from an organization (or something like that) you are no longer eligible for NCAA play. Plattsburgh's Hince had a similar problem the only difference was that he never even made the squad but then could not come back to play.

No, he signed a professional contract. His eligibility is gone.

Furthermore, he's got a contract with the Florida Panthers, not the Amerks. If Rochester were to lose it's AHL team, Eric would go to wherever Florida assigns their players at the AHL level.

So with the two way contract, Sellek is relegated to playing for the ECHL affiliate in Florida if he's not called up (or if the Panthers have another AHL affiliate I don't know of). And he's done as a Laker - thanks for answering that hcky.

Forgive me though; I didn't mean Selleck would be out of a job in Rochester because the team may be gone - it's because the Panthers are severing ties at season's end with them as it is (and possibly the death of the Amerks to follow). Hope he can make the move up sooner rather than later.

No, a two-way contract means that Eric can be sent to the minors without having to go through waivers. He can be assigned to either an AHL or ECHL team under the rules of an entry level contract (which all players under the age of 24 must sign if it is their first professional contract) and will not have to go through waivers until he either gains enough NHL games to become a veteran player, or he becomes a Group 4 minor league free agent.

If the Amerks franchise were to fold, Florida would undoubtedly sign an affiliation agreement with another AHL team. There is no stipulation in any league that you can only have one affiliate, for years Anaheim and Dallas sent their prospects to a number of AHL teams. Most likely, Eric will stay in the A, playing somewhere if the Amerks do fold (I really don't think they will).

Good point - the Sabres did share affiliation with the Panthers when it came to the Amerks at one time. But this means Selleck's going to be traveling away from Upstate NY soon, which would be a shame because I think he likely has a lot more to show and develop yet in pro hockey. He'll be missed from this area.

Amerks folding completely, maybe not, but Rochester is outgrowing it at least. I've never seen management cover 25% of the cheap seats with advertisement tarps before (at the end where Rochester shoots twice, no less), and with the prices they're asking, its small wonder they can't sell out anymore even with seating removed. It's too large a venue for too small of a product - the economics only make sense if they can still fill every limited seat at premium prices. I'm thinking, at best, that a move by the Amerks to a different locale might happen. There's a lot of AHL markets that occupy smaller cities and smaller venues after all.

I'll get off my AHL spouting about nothing now - congrats to Platty on knocking off the Big Cheese out of Norwich. Looks like our guys might be the new #1 on the Less Meaningful Yet Discussion Provoking poll of the USCHO.:D

Eric bit off a bit more than he could chew against Jesse Boulerice tonight.

I think the rise of RIT hockey has hurt the Amerks a little bit too. Granted it only seats a little over 2,000. However, the Tigers have become the hot ticket in town.

Selleck. Lmao! The Plattsburgh native (Boulerice) whooped his ***!

This was probably payback for the HUGE hit Selleck threw on Boulerice last time they played. And in the preseason Selleck beat the tar out of Boulerice in a game. This one however, ouch. Something tells me though that Boulerice was insanely mad at Selleck because when he went down to the ice Boulerice jumped all over him and kept swinging, normally fighters let up at that point.

Re: Setting Sail - Oswego State Lakers 2010-2011 Season Thread

Basically, Eric is a rookie and he embarrassed Boulerice on two separate occasions, once in pre-season and once a few weeks ago. Boulerice being a veteran and the resident tough guy on Wilkes-Barre was not going to let it happen again.

Re: Setting Sail - Oswego State Lakers 2010-2011 Season Thread

So is it safe to say Oswego will now be the new #1 after Wick's loss?
