Good game last night for the Lakers, a good road win against a pretty solid opponent. The early goals were key because Relkoff looked very shaky from that point on. He is very good side to side so the cross crease passes were not working, shots from the outside and one on one were and they kind of stopped taking them later in the game. One that really stood out was Brown all alone shorthanded and he tried to stick handle it right into the net, a shot would have beat him, he had room.
If not for all the power plays in the third, I don't think the score would have been very close, some of the penalties were warranted, others not so much. The penalty kill was great and it took a long 5 on 3 to finally beat them. The fore checking was great which is an area they have been lacking a little bit in this season. Beckwith was solid again and he is probably the most consistent goalie the Lakers have had in a while.
The two biggest points for me were the second period and the relative lack of unforced defensive zone turnovers. The second period was Oswego's best period in the game where it is usually their worst. The unforced defensive zone turnovers were painful to watch in some of the games this year and they did a good job at limiting them against a very opportunistic Mustangs team.
Another point I wanted to touch on is Ian Boots. That kid can flat out play and I don't think we have seen how good he really can be. He can stick handle in a phone booth but his decision making needs to get a little better. He seems to try to make the harder play when pushed into a corner to sometimes to the detriment of the team. He also has a bit of a habit of hanging on to it too long.
The most important thing is, they are now three points up on Buffalo State and Geneseo in the SUNYAC with Genny coming up in a few weeks. If they take care of business in the last two conference games of the semester, it definitely puts them in the drivers seat for another regular season title.
