Selection Show

Re: Selection Show

From my perspective this is a great matchup for Clarkson. Q launched Clarkson into a D first and only game yesterday and Clarkson won't let that happen twice. So, Im happy with the matchup.

Huh? Clarkson hasn't beat QU in 3 tries this year. Having said that, any team would have a tough time going undefeated against a quality opponent for a fourth time. That would be the only reason I'd like this matchup for Clarkson.

I agree. Hoping Q will prove that they really are the top Ecac team for a third time. And BC proves they are really the top HE team for the third time ..
Why have playoffs at all? They really mean nothing unless there is a huge upset where the team wins a conference. At the end of league play just go to a four team tournament or heck why not do an expanded pairwise ,1 and done, keeping in mind their present day criterion which has nothing to do with rankings but travel costs. I totally saw BC playing Northeastern...not.Should have had a poll going I guess

Re: Selection Show

Totally agree with you PuckRush......Quinni played a strong D game but 4 times vs the same team with same results is tough.....Quinni should play the same game that the Buffalo Beauts played last night against the Connecticut Whale! Of course, a team with Duggan, Bozek, PFaltzer, Steadman, et al wouldn't hurt.....but they were aggressive all over the ice, for 60 minutes, forcing the play and capitalizing on their efforts......

Re: Selection Show

Question: Is there a rule on hotel costs?

To be more specific, would Princeton have been entitled to hotel rooms in Boston, while NU is not?

It's terribly sad to think that the NCAA would badly damage the tournament bracket in order to save one night's hotel expense. My guess is that there's no actual rule. But my confidence in the current process is so low that it wouldn't surprise me if hotel cost played a role.

Re: Selection Show

But really the better reform here is not so much about better trading off travel vs bracket integrity, but about officially allowing some consideration in avoiding intraconference play in the pairings. There's no hope in NCAA of avoiding intraconference play through increased air travel, but the NCAA should be willing to pay for a bus for a real interconference tourney, if it's willing to pay to send Quinnipiac to Harvard rather than BU in last year's scenario.

It really is odd that the #2 rule in setting the D3 women's tournament is that "Teams from the same conference will not be paired to play each other in the first contest of the regional tournament as long as geographic proximity is maintained" Geographic proximity being within 500 miles, number 1 rule in D3. But it is not a top priority to avoid intraconference matchups in the D1 tournament. Considering Princeton is only 260 miles from BC, it should have been a no brainer, when the other team was flying to Minnesota anyway.

Its interesting that the #1 seed in the women's tournament got screwed because of this rule...having to play a 4 or 5 seed team instead of the 8 seed team, to avoid a intraconference match-up...and BC got "screwed" because of the lack of this rule in the D1 tournament.

Re: Selection Show

I understand everyone's being upset but is there actually no recourse here? No petitioning the committee? Nothing since we all know how the NCAA holds our sport in such contempt? I mean we live in a time when the GOP is willing to split itself, establishment vs Trump :D:o

Re: Selection Show

We posted the same time TTT20....thanks for that and kudos to BCI for going the extra mile....even if it proves that the whole process is about 20% subjective....and cost based!

Re: Selection Show

Princeton's quality win bonus is 12th at .0023
Northeastern's is is 24th at .0004

QWB is the new feature that apparently was added based on coach's sentiment. Maybe they looked at that.

Anyway, thanks to Sarah Fraser and to Grant for the followup.

Re: Selection Show

Copying and pasting one of the things that really makes you scratch your head:

There is not a single ranking system that ranks Princeton above Northeastern -- not WCHODR, not Rutter, not KRACH, and obviously not the Pairwise. Even the completely subjective USCHO poll has Princeton ranked significantly lower than Northeastern.

What makes this even more crazy is that the reasoning specifically cited by the committee, that strength of schedule played a factor in choosing to rank Princeton higher than Northeastern, is that both RPI and KRACH rank Northeastern's schedule tougher than Princeton's.

Re: Selection Show

They throw darts with numbers 5-8 at the 6 teams that are being considered for those slots! So much for the PAIRWISE, *** NCAA?

Exactly... so I would guess the way this committee conversation played out is someone recommended Princeton on the QWB, and then because it saved a little money, no one saw reason to question it. I wouldn't take Sarah's comment so literally as to Princeton actually having the better overall SoS.

It has always been true you can only be fully confident in the Pairwise when there's an absolute consensus in the criteria.

But I would prefer that if there is a conflict in the criteria, for teams a spot apart in the ranking, we then allow swaps to avoid intraconference play. Much better tournament, and it takes a bit of discretion away from the committee and avoids controversy.

Re: Selection Show

How Is Northeastern schedule weaker? Princeton out of conference was 6 games vs CHA opponents 6-0.And NU played 4 ecac opponents 2-1-1( not losing to ST lawrence may I add) and 4 CHA games 3-1.

Re: Selection Show

I would like to now see a Princeton - Northeastern game. (I'm onto the fingers on my second hand for how many times the dogs and birds have played this season.

Let BC and Qunny play a practice game.
