SCSU @ Denver--November 27th and 28th

Re: SCSU @ Denver--November 27th and 28th

DU picks up the W even though they played very sloppy at times on D. SCSU played scrappy hockey all night. Should be a good game tomorrow night.

Re: SCSU @ Denver--November 27th and 28th

Caught the game on NHL network tonight. Rough night for SCSU fans. Has anyone seen the quality of the Magness Ice up close? The puck was bouncing like crazy and players from both teams were falling randomly all over the place. Looked pretty bad from my perspective.

I won't say Denver significantly outplayed SCSU, because it was pretty close, but they did a bit and converted on their opportunities. Penalty calling was fair, some questionable ones both ways. Novak tonight looked like the Usain Bolt on skates. At one point the puck was dumped (novak one stride past center ice) in the denver zone and Novak was about a stride away from beating the Cheverie to the puck. SCSU passing was brutal. Huskies lacked physical presence but its not like denver was that much more physical. There were no soft goals. Lee was screened by his own man in two of the first three goals, both times the D-man stepped outta the way when it appeared they could have made a decent block of the shot themselves. On the breakaway, Huskies miss a very good scoring chance, get lazy, turnover in the neutral zone leading to the break where Lee was caught cheating down and got beat high. Game changing goal right there. What would have been 4-4 goes to a 5-3 lead and deflated Huskies. The other two were snipes. Huskies definately had Nate Dey syndrome. Two doorstep shots whiffed on mostly open net backside. Not great but decent effort overall, Denver just played (and converted chances) better. Thats my perspective from my viewing on the NHL network.

Re: SCSU @ Denver--November 27th and 28th

I thought DU was able to win tonight based on some exceptionally skilled plays. Martin's two goals were exceptional, both the weak side shot on the great pass from Tyler that he buried, and the tip of Wren's point blast was huge. Also the Big Chevy save in the third, and Donovan's short side backbreaker was the difference tonight.

SCSU played very hard all night, and got those two late goals in the second to pull close, when DU sleepwalked a bit. DU needs to find better gap control in the neutral zone to slow the SCSU transition game, which was dangerous all night. Eddy is a beast for SCSU, and Jordy Christian's line had the better of the Pios for most of the night.

DU looks pretty passive at the blueline, and I think Brookwell needs to be back out there.

Great to see Martin and Maiani so active, and Rakh and Ruegs were very precise tonight. For DU to get the sweep, we need to see Colborne play like he did against UND. Nice first goal for Knowlton.

Wiercioch is clearly not himself right now with the knee hurting. He's very tentative. If I was Gwoz, I'd rest him tomorrow and get him ready for CC.

The Post's three stars

1. Jesse Martin.

DU junior wing had two goals.

2. Rhett Rakhshani.

Pioneers forward and captain had a goal and an assist.

3. Anthony Maiani.

Two assists, two shots and a plus-2 rating for the DU junior.

Re: SCSU @ Denver--November 27th and 28th

Have a feeling Wiercioch may not play tonight or be limited to the Power Play.
:( But he needs a chance to heal. And would like to see him play nearer full strength against cc.

Re: SCSU @ Denver--November 27th and 28th

Really enjoy listening to St. Cloud native Charlie Host on the DU broadcasts. He's knowlegable about the game and tempers his homerism even though he played at Denver.

Huskies rarely play the physical game. With the exception of Hepp, Marvin and sometimes Lauridson and Raboin it simply isn't their game. There were spurts of a quick transition game from SCSU but it generally happens when certain DE are on the ice. As usual, Rakhshani had a good game.

For as little play as Eddy has had this year (due to injury) he's quickly becoming one of our top complete players. He has the speed and scoring ability but also plays the physical game.

The Huskies made a good run at it. Cheverie made his big save while Lee didn't. Difference in the game.

Overall I thought Denver had the edge in play but the result could have gone either way.

Denver is the best team in the league. They out played SCSU for most of game. I give the Huskies credit for battling back when Denver fell asleep with a big lead, but when push came to shove they got it done. If Denver brings their A game for 60 minutes the Huskies can't beat them unless Dunn steals the game.:( Hopefully SCSU brings the energy again tonight and we get to find out how bad Denver wants it.

Re: SCSU @ Denver--November 27th and 28th

The ice is almost always bad at Magness no matter what the weather.

I was just going to say that. The building needs a second chiller. What the hell does DU do with all the student fees?

PS I agree that PW gets a rest tonight. Colbourne was ineffective last night--seemed to be just going through the motions--no hustle. Even though Chevy gave up 3 last night he was the difference in the third.

SCSU's PP at 15% is their weakest link. Not that ours was all that impressive either.

Has anybody heard what Rhett's injury was during the second last night?

Yes it is. The first part of her quote was directed at me. (Ok, I MIGHT have said something that wasn't very nice about Donald and his UAA blog.) We're having a good time over there on that thread.;)

Re: SCSU @ Denver--November 27th and 28th

With good goal tending, we would have won that game. Lee looked like a deer in the headlights. Not ready for prime time yet. Huskies did well to come back, and to score 3 goals on Chevy. Lee had some tough ones, but he could have saved a few of them.

I'm hoping for a split. At least the gophers got creamed.

Go Huskies!!

Wait.....wait..wait, no I want the Pio's to win so we will go into the big Rocky Mountain Showdown tied for first!! Yup, that's the plan.:)

Maybe like #1 against #3 in the nation?:)

Life is good!!

Lee was vulnerable low. Is that typical?

Re: SCSU @ Denver--November 27th and 28th

can u order just tonights game on DU's website or do u have to order for the full month. or is there any place to watch it online?

So far, he seems to get flustered easily. He's vulnerable in all areas, he doesn't position himself well and flops a lot. He makes some great saves and then he sieves. Dunn has proven himself better thus far.
