SCSU @ Denver--November 27th and 28th

Re: SCSU @ Denver--November 27th and 28th

Anyone talking about great SCSU goalies can't leave out Dean Weasler. Here's how I'd rank them...

1. Scott Meyer
2. Bobby Goepfert
3. Dean Weasler
4. Jase Weslosky
5. Brian Leitza

And I never saw that Sjerven guy play.

I slack off for a day and come back to see actual civil hockey talk. I always enjoy the swami. If we got married I could be pope swami.

Can't say I disagree with your list. However, the two most competitive IMO were Meyer and Sjerven. These two were willing to duke it out with anyone at anytime and they did. From that standpoint I'd put Sjerven in the mix with Leitza and Weslosky. Meyer is by far the most intense player we've ever had at SCSU. You have Weasler higher than where I'd rank him but from 3-5 plus Sjerven we're splitting hairs.

Re: SCSU @ Denver--November 27th and 28th

Raboin is very good but probably a 3 or 4 on teams with a strong defensive unit.

With what he does both offensively, defensively, special teams, and leadership, on what college team is Raboin a 4? Or even a 3?

and tommorrow we get it on.

Nah... she's out of town until next Wed. :(

The greatest goalie to wear a St. Cloud uniform is, without a doubt, Frank Mr. Zero Brimsek.

True, but tommy's the only one old enough to have seen him play at SCSU. :D

Raboin has turned out to be one hell of a walk on! He isn't the most naturally gifted player, but he has made himself into one heck of a player. If you put him on most college hockey teams in the country he would be a top two defenseman.

I agree with your statemment completely, but to be fair, DL wrote SCSU... not St. Cloud. Back when Brimsek played, it was SCTC (St. Cloud Teacher's College). Also, Sam LoPresti would be second on the all-time list amongst St. Cloud goaltender alumni.

Re: SCSU @ Denver--November 27th and 28th

Sam is also the father of former DU goalie Peter LoPresti who played at DU in the 1970s and later for the North Stars.

Re: SCSU @ Denver--November 27th and 28th

I agree on Lietza 100%. You could get to his head and then he would seive out. I liked Sjerven a lot and his defense hung him out to dry a lot. If Sjerven had one more year I really think good things would have happened for Dahl that year. Instead Neil Cooper drove drunk and hit someone and went to jail and Lietza was forced to play as a freshman and sieved out.

Yeah, Super Cooper wasn't so super when he took out that ambulance while drunk. :o

This thread is why I like playing DU. Actual civil hockey talk....

The Huskies were picked by the coaches to win the league. They had everybody back except Sjerven and Cooper had been very good when he played the year before. Obviously Leitza was thrown to the wolves and couldn't handle the pressure. He ended up being an ok goalie for us but I thought he was way over rated. teams could really get to his head and gave up at least two or three bombs from past the blue in his career.

It was sweet when Sjerven got in a fight against the Gophers his senior year and was kicked out for the saturday game. All the gopher fans were were telling me how the Huskies had no chance now that he is out and then Copper went out there and played great and got the win. Oh the good ol' days.......

Heard Gwoz briefly on the radio today.

On SCSU (paraphrased):

SCSU is a very good hockey team - record may be .500, but look at the teams they split with in the last two weeks - Wisconsin and UND. They are playing good hockey and have two of the best forwards in the country in Roe and Lasch. They play well against us and will be a challenge this weekend.

On DU:

Trying to build off momentum of last weekend's play vs UND, in terms of execution and establishing sense of team identity about who we are and how we want to play. Tallked about players healing up from injury- Chevy, Colborne, etc. Got the sense that this team is starting to emerge.

Critical to take momentum from last weekend and make something happen with it this weekend and next. If the couple weeks following are played right, the UND sweep is the kind of weekend you build a season around.

Tough to argue with that, but for argument's sake, he did only played 11 games with St. Cloud. Still, he should certainly be at or near the top of the list.

I often use a "Toronto Hockey Hall of Fame" standard when measuring player greatness and association with a school. To explain this, when I have a beer in Toronto with knowledgable people who know hockey in general but know little about US college hockey and they ask me "who are the greatest players I would know that played for your school?"

For Denver, I tell them Glenn Anderson, who is in the Hockey Hall of Fame for his exploits with the Edmonton Oilers of the 1980s. Doesn't matter that Anderson was just a solid one-year player for DU in 1979 who didn't get any all league or all American hardware. There are plenty of DU players who did 10 times as much for DU as Anderson did, but those guys' names mostly won't register in Toronto. Having Hockey Hall of Famers in the Players' category from your school is the best hockey world validation there is, and there are only a few schools that have them.

Cornell: Ken Dryden
Princeton: Hobey Baker
St. Cloud: Frank Brimsek
Denver: Glenn Anderson
Boston Colllege: Brian Leetch, Joe Mullen
Minnesota-Duluth: Brett Hull
Michigan Tech: Tony Esposito
UNH: Rod Langway

No Gophers, Terriers, Sioux or Badgers yet in the players' category....

Nutini has impressed me far more this year than last. He is not an offensive D-Man like Wiercioch, but he has been solid. From the comments in the article sounds like he has a Testwuide mentality to be a or the strong man for the team. John Lee seems to have kicked his game up a notch from last year, And I thought Ryder played well last weekend.

And speaking about kicking their play up a notch, still waiting for Maiani and Salazar to show some of that flash from last year. Hope that wasn't a one year thing.

Salazar was a healthy scratch last weekend, we'll see if Gwoz lets him play this weekend. Brookwell was sick last weekend so he may play on D this weekend.

I don't know why you keep posting that stuff about Wiercioch being injured. You know he wasn't. ;)
