Sandusky/Penn State scandal

Re: Sandusky/Penn State scandal

I reminded of the old joke: " My name is Fred. I built bridges all my life. One night I got drunk and gave a guy a BJ and all my friends found out. Do you think they all call me "Fred the builder'" any more? No, now it's just "Fred the corksucker"

You buried the lede, so to speak. I've heard a variation on that joke told very effectively, though in that case, the punch line involved unnatural relations with wooly animals.

Re: Sandusky/Penn State scandal

I just posted this in the other thread, in response to the rumor that children were being pimped to big donors:

If the rumors are true, we're not talking about a pedophile anymore...Seriously, this could seriously be construed as 2 criminal organizations, PSU and the Second Mile working a child prostitution ring. We're talking federal criminal organization laws here, on the same level as the mob. That is how serious this could get, and that could ruin not only the entire PSU athletic department, but leave the entire university in shambles. If it is found out that the athletic department was being funded in part by donations given through a child prostitution ring, it is not even a reach to think that the entire athletic department is shut down. Completely shut down.

edit: since the link wasn't posted in this thread: http://www.nesn.com/2011/11/jerry-s...ung-boys-to-rich-donors-says-mark-madden.html

I have never felt this disgusted in my life as a Big Ten Alum who was genuinely happy to see Paterno set the record. There is no question in my mind that he knew. He had to. As far as the link above, I hope to everything that I consider to be Holy that it is only a rumor. Unfortunately, this answers a few more questions regarding the inability/unwillingness of the administration to bring it to light (Guess what! A bunch of our top shelf boosters like to diddle little kids set up by our legendary D-coordinator! Go Linebacker U!), and THIS IS the same guy who pretty much predicted this scenario back in April.

As a Wisconsin fan with tickets to the Penn State game on the 26th, I am scared to go to the game out of fear of what a few of our more vocal students will do after a few beers. The same pack mentality that took hold of Happy Valley last night has a habit of taking root in Madison as well (see also, Halloween 2001-2005, Mifflin Street Block Party circa 2002).

And of course, the media is totally overshadowing the true victims and making it Paterno vs. the world. For shame.

Re: Sandusky/Penn State scandal

I don't think people outside Happy Valley knew. He was a finalist for the UVA job.

My theory is that after the UVA job fell through he decided he didn't want to go anywhere else. He had a nice setup at PSU.

- Emeritus title at the University
- An office
- Salary from the University (retirement) plus the charity (one report I saw said he got $57K in 2009)
- Perks from the football program and the school (annual trips to bowl games, for example)
- An enabling environment.
- Ready-made victims from the charity he helped found

Why would he leave?
UVA fell through for a reason? Just rumors but I have a feeling lots of folks in the college football knew he was a skinner. 57K a year is chump change for a guy with his football resume, he could have made millions

Re: Sandusky/Penn State scandal

So did anyone hear the colin cowherd radio show where the former victim called in and talked about how much it messed up his life?

Just fyi... 1 on 6 boys are victims of some sort of sexual abuse. That is some stat! So figure a few players on the psu team have been abused but they are not telling anyone. I wonder what they are thinking about now?

Spencer Hall (guy running every day should be saturday) was just on VS.

Host: Should the NCAA be involved in this?

Spencer: That would be like a homeowner’s association investigating a triple homicide. The NCAA can barely run a basketball tournament.

Re: Sandusky/Penn State scandal

Yes, it does look funny, but probably not in the way you're implying.

He had recently broken up a $1.5 MM heroin ring, and there are allegedly elements in common between his disappearance and the murder of a Maryland prosecutor who was also involved in prosecution of a heroin ring. (There are other elements that tend to work against this tie, though.)

On balance, I think it's a lot more likely that his disappearance is related to something else from his case history than to the 1998 investigation. You're talking a seven year gap in the one case, vs. as little as a couple of weeks in the heroin case (and the heroin case involves the kind of people who would think nothing of murder—we're not to that point with the child rape case, and hopefully we never will be).

Sheesh, what a mess. Thanks for the info.

Re: Sandusky/Penn State scandal

from the Houston Chronicle

Then 28, McQueary was "distraught" after witnessing the alleged 2002 assault, according to the indictment. Yet it appears he may have continued to participate in fundraising events with Sandusky — including one held less than a month later.

And the Taiwanese news animators got a hold of it.

That really puts Maize's point into perspective from earlier. I'm now wondering why JoPa was canned.

he did quit. he resigned. why keep him? if he is quitting (on his own [give me a second]) because of something he did and feels responsible about, why keep him around?

if you quit your job, you may be asked to give two weeks notice and help train a replacement... or you may have security escort you to the door.

if he stayed this would be a chitshow until the last presser after the bowl game. as a trustee you can't subject your already damaged school to that.

(and i didn't even have to bring up whether he showed bad behavior-- knew, 'cardinal law'd him', whatever. just makes sense.

Re: Sandusky/Penn State scandal

I never thought about it before... but the timing is odd that it all comes out one week after he passes Eddie Robinson on the all time victory list.

Re: Sandusky/Penn State scandal

Civil suit potential reportedly between $100MM and $250MM. About 15 percent of Penn State's entire endowment.

You really want to see some fireworks? Wait until they have to raise tuition to pay for them all.

Depends on if the pimp out is substantiated or not. If it is, then add a zero.

This is dangerous, but I'm highly tempted to declare shenanigans on that part. I find it very hard to believe that Sandusky could pimp those kids out to high rollers without accidentally tipping off someone who was not into that sort of thing. I'd have to believe that the **** would have hit the fan long ago had that been happening. The more people that he offers them to, the more risk he takes in getting caught.

While I don't necessarily disagree it's not like anyone associated with PSU was lining up to report what they did know. Sadly nothing seems out of reach at this point....hell a few posts back Priceless had a quote from Barry Switzer and he (Switzer) was a voice of reason.

Its hard to believe, but at this point, I'm not ready to think that there is anything that isn't possible in this case. Time will tell, I'm guessing if this story has legs a story will be published soon enough.
