Re: Sandusky/Penn State scandal

Random thought... I thought I hears they kept pedos separate from the regular prison population? Maybe that is before convictions

Re: Sandusky/Penn State scandal

Part of a letter sent to at least one Penn State recruit earlier this year:

the mister brought up an interesting point today. maybe this whole Sandusky thing was why Paterno wouldn't retire. he was afraid of the skeletons cascading out of the closet if he ever left.

Or, for the handful of times when they considered pushing him out, THIS was the leverage JoePa had. "You push me out, you'll all follow me to the unemployment line."

Intriguing to speculate about, but ultimately as meaningful as Jack Ruby's motives

They still have not been sanctioned by the NCAA or are under investigation. Maybe after the legal process completes its course, but as of right now, it still is a true statement.

Right. But that last paragraph isn't great either.

Re: Sandusky/Penn State scandal

What controversy does that letter refer to? Or is it from a few years ago? And it looks fake. Or rather not official.

It's just a letter Penn State sent to an (unnamed) recruit, that the recruit showed to a reporter. The controversy, clearly, is the Ohio State situation--Penn State and Ohio State often go after the same players.

Re: Sandusky/Penn State scandal

This morning on First Take ESPN's Jon Richie gave some first hand impressions of Sandusky.
Jon grew up in central PA and met Sandusky when he was 14 years old. He was also recruited by Sandusky to play for PsU. (Richie chose Stanford.) Grew up idolizing Paterno and Sandusky. Back home in PA got involved with Second Mile. At some point made a speech practically glorifying Sandusky as the most selfless person he ever met. Said S looked embarassed. At the time Richie thought he must have been laying it on a little thick. Knowing what he does today, thinks S was probably mortified by what he doing. S never made a pass at him or did anything inappropriate.

He also knew or played against Mike McQueary as a teen. Shared a locker as rookies with the Raiders. Straight as an arrow. Life long dream to play and coach at Penn State. Believes that he was told by a higher up not to say anything about what he had seen. The issue was "being taken care of."

Perhaps the most telling thing he said: As a young man iff he had seen what S was doing in the shower with that youg boy and with all his personal feelings about S being almost his idol. His head would have simply exploded and his first thought would have been to run from what he had just seen.
He spoke more about his reaction, but I can't remember it as clearly. He did give me the impression that he understood McQueary's reaction especially considering his(McQ) life long love for all things Penn State. In my mind it doesn't give McQ a pass, but feel a little more empathy for him.

They might. I know that pedos are not treated kindly in prison. Not one bit. The general attitude is crimes against an adult, ok, fine, but once kids are involved.....

Re: Sandusky/Penn State scandal

Paterno has hired a high powered Washington criminal defense lawyer.

and Moody's has downgraded Penn State, citing financial and reputational risk.

Not protective custody

Penn State's deposed receivers coach Mike McQueary, today placed on what the school called "administrative leave," told his receivers on a brief conference call that he would no longer be their coach. He also stunned them with an apparent attempt at gallows humor that he was "in protective custody" at a secluded location, a joke that fell flat. The players believed he was serious.

On Friday afternoon, according to two team sources, new receivers coach Terrell Golden gathered his players in a room at the PSU football complex and allowed them to talk with McQueary on a speaker phone.

During a brief and emotional conversation, McQueary told them, “I wanted to let you guys know I'm not your coach anymore. I'm done.”

When players asked, "Coach, where are you? Can we see you?" McQueary responded, “No, I'm actually in protective custody. I'm not in State College.”

However, several hours later, Sports Information Director Jeff Nelson said that McQueary was not in protective custody - that his characterization was not true, raising the prospect that it was an attempt at black humor that fell flat. The players did not get the joke and were still shaken by the comment when the call ended.
