RPI V: Chase for the Championship (and Hobey)

Re: RPI V: Chase for the Championship (and Hobey)

Much better game by the boys tonight. I must admit the first period had me worried as we did not look all that much different than the night before. But we took over in the second period(or Brown tired a bit). And never let up. A nice 4-1 victory and I think we could have had a few more. Another effort like this and we can extend the season to next weekend. Hopefully the officials will not screw this up-they have made some poor calls in the first 2 games but at least they have not been the deciding factor. Go Red!!!

Re: RPI V: Chase for the Championship (and Hobey)

Shame-only 1223 attendance at the HFH tonight. They saw a good effort. Could have been worse as only 769 saw the Harvard game at Princeton tonight.

Re: RPI V: Chase for the Championship (and Hobey)

I'm not sure what people named "Brandon" or "Pirri" have down to Mr. Baker in his history, but it's a shame that he singles out Pirri with his whistle. At least one (and I thought two) of the three penalties called against Brandon tonight were phantoms.

As much as the effort was not there last night, it was tonight. And the difference was clearly shown on the scoreboard. The same effort tomorrow night will give us a date with someone (still in flux since the NC series is also going to 3) next weekend.

Clemente has a very quick glove hand, but leaves a lot of rebounds out there for the picking. RPI was able to capitalize tonight.

LET'S GO RED!

Much more fun to watch this game. The refs are still terrible, including the linesman. I could have sworn the puck went in the goal early in the second period( a few minutes in). The puck went in right next to the left goal post( looking at York), and came right back out. It was a shot by Kerins I believe. Many people on our side thought it went in, as we all got up to cheer. Is their a replay on RPI TV to look at the play closer?

We took a look at it; it hit the pipe. The full stream will be up on our website later tonight, or tomorrow morning if I fall asleep before it finishes encoding.

Clean off the post. The view from the catwalk gave us a good look at it.

Re: RPI V: Chase for the Championship (and Hobey)

Has to be tiring to play 3 games in 3 nights-the better conditioned team at this stage of the season has a distinct edge. We dealt with the Brown forecheck far better yesterday than in game 1-just have to duplicate the effort tonight. This team deserves a 20+ win season-Let's Go Red!!

Re: RPI V: Chase for the Championship (and Hobey)

We just need to play like we did last night and we should be fine. I hope we don't take dumb penelties like mouthing of to the ref. Baker and Feola are just horrible. The linesman drive me nuts when they don't drop the puck and think they have to talk to the player every time there is a faceoff. Even Kotyra did a better job last weekend. I am assuming we get Baker and Feola again tonight? I don't think a team should get stuck with the same refs for 3 consecutive games in the playoffs. Is there a rule on this?

I believe you get the same refs for all 3 nights unless Whiny Mike is involved, as was previously stated.

Great to see Cullen score a goal last night, his first in 17 games. :) Dang Id love to see him go on a tear. I have a feeling he's one of the players thats gonna have a break out season for us next year with it all starting in the playoffs this year. Now go prove me right Pat. :D Lets Go Red!!

I think it was Pirri that was called for charging along the near boards (Troy side). Although he took a couple of strides he got his shoulder in front of the Brown player moving along the boards and then took him into the wall. That is generally not called and you could almost sense the kid wondering, "Just what am I allowed to do in this league?"

I had a great angle on that play, and it was Pirri. He and the Brown player were going hard after the puck. They got there at the same time and Pirri made the hit (a clean hit) to take the Brown player off the puck.
A play that I must have seen thousands of times in hockey games, and nothing is called.
At that point, I was beginning to believe that Baker had something in for Pirri.
That was nothing more than a "hockey play".
Very poor officiating all night long.

Guess this means when I'm at the game I need to bring the 20's. Or should I bring hundies? :D

Yup-and the refs have been horribly inconsistent with their calls about interfereing with the goaltender. York has been hit, nudged, plowed into for 120 minutes now and there has hardly been anything called. But if we do it, of course it's a different story.

I have a real problem with the goalie situation.
You are right, York gets hit on a regular basis with no calls. Usually we get a penalty for retaliation.
Just once, I want to see us run the oppositions goaltender. And I am not talking about a bump, I am talking about sending a real message.
There are times during a game when you can afford to take a penalty. If we show the opposition that we will not take that stuff, maybe they will think twice about doing it themselves.

The only thing possible I saw there that might've lead to the charging call was that he thought he saw Pirri leave his feet to make the hit.

Of course he was wrong, but hey we're all not perfect.

Totally agree re: Pirri he was on fire last night, particularly the 2nd period where he showed flashes of the flat-out brilliance he displayed in G'town last year. I noticed that Burgdoerfer seemed to be acting as his on-ice "Rabbi" having had several quick "keep your head" and "atta-boy" moments with Brandon.

The roughing/boarding call was a flat-out hustle play where Pirri busted his *** to get back to pressure the puck handler. The hit was something you'd see any night of the week in HE or WCHA. Seth went over to the box to let Brandon know he did it right.

I agree. The problem with that is, the odds are quite good that whoever does it will end up with a 5min. major and a game DQ....

I would note that Pirri's last penalty occurred when he entered the fray to get the Brownies out of our crease. On that play, one of our guys -- I wanna say Bergin -- drilled a Bruno into our net hard. That's how it needs to be -- every time.
