RPI V: Chase for the Championship (and Hobey)

Re: RPI V: Chase for the Championship (and Hobey)

I wasn't overly impressed with the Brown forecheck last night. Even in the third period, we owned the neutral zone. It was really just a combination of bad giveaways in the corners even before puck battles began and a failure to keep shooting the puck when they had the defense on their heels that scuppered any chance of winning last night.

Or maybe it's all Appert's fault, right blocker?

Doubt it -- spring break plus MAAC hoops at the TUC. You and Jenny could always grace us with a visit Doc...they've got a nice new hotel waiting for you on Hoosick St.:p

Once all health issues are dealt with we plan on doing just that. We miss the atmosphere, our friday night dinners at Verdile's, and the comraderie we had in Section 6. :)

I've never been to Verdile's....have always heard it is excellent ...let me know when you're coming:p

Re: RPI V: Chase for the Championship (and Hobey)

Last night we just got outhustled period. Pirri taking the 3 penaltys in the first had me shaking my head but then he goes out and creates at least 5 or more scoring chances in the 3rd but nobody could seem to put the puck past Clemente. IMO Pirri was the best player out there for RPI last night. I said to the person sitting next to me that Brown was gonna make this a chippy physical affair and thats what it was. Win or go home tonight.

I disagree. I think Malchuk was our best forward last night. Joel was the only forward, save for Jerry, who consistently played with intensity all night...and was willing to get his arse to the net, regardless of the price. Far too much dancing around on the side of the net last night....somebody, ANYBODY has to bring the party, the kitchen sink, the whole enchilada to Clemente's lap tonight.

If we can't do that, it will time to break out the golf clubs.

It was our routine from 1975 until 2001 for every friday night home game. Then we'd stop at Bella Napoli Bakery to pick up pastries to bring to the game (and share with the members of Row K). Saturdays we ate at several different places. When we get back into the routine will definitely let you know and meet up.

I too thought Malchuk played with the most intesnity on the team. Although hard to tell by watching on Ustream-he certainly seemed to be skating and hitting more than anyone else on the team.

Re: RPI V: Chase for the Championship (and Hobey)

As I wrote last night, I hate myself for singling people out and will try to refrain from doing so moving forward. That said, taking 3 penalties in the first period hurt us -- if in no other way than being more tired in the 3rd period. As I said before, If we have to kill 2 mins. I want it for laying wood in front of York or ringing somebody's bell (#7 comes immediately to mind) NOT for irresponsible mouthing off..or being lazy on defense.

These guys have 35+ games under their belt...they're not freshmen anymore, IMO.

While the penalties that put us a man down were both rather reckless, nothing bad came of them. Brown had maybe one scoring chance on the two power plays they got from Pirri's penalties and aside from that RPI wasn't challenged at all on the kill. Pirri corrected the problems he had and ended up playing a pretty inspired game.

Taking issue with one guy out of the mess on a platter the entire team did is foolish. The team didn't respond to anything until the game got into "Oh sh-t" mode when they were down by one. That's not good.

Asking your team to kill three penalties to start your first career playoff game is foolish. My taking exception to it is not. I do agree there is plenty of blame to go around for the eggs laid last night.

More than anything I've grown tired of waiting for this team to start playing with consistency and urgency,.

Interesting statement-I agree whole heartedly. We are no longer dealing with new freshmen. The boys now have 37 games under their collective belts. It is not too much to ask that there be signs of improvement now over the early part of the season. This team should by now be much more consistent. Let's see what happens tonight-if they can't put it all together, we will have a long period of time to debate all of this.

Not to be too nit-picky, but one of the penalties he took was a matching minor and RPI had a power play in that instance anyhow. Aside from that I do agree with your point. You are glossing over the point that I made that Pirri was the best offensive player in the second and third periods. I know they didn't score but he was one of the very few guys that was consistently going after it and trying to take it to them the right way after the fact. If you want to hold the first period against him for the whole game, that's fine - but you'd be missing the point.

When you take penalties , you wear down the penalty killers , especially when Polacek and damigo kill penalties , PP and double shift most of the time , it kills . Secondly , Pirri was at fault for the 1st and 3rd goal , because of a lack of effort . He let his guy go from the corner on the first and was lackadaisical on the blueline for the 3rd . I believe he was -2 lastnight . Is he good offensively , absolutley , does he need to play harder , absolutley , especially on his defensive game . Ya he scores and assists , but he gets scored on a ton . But when you play as much as he does you tend to get complacent because it doesn't matter what you do out on the ice , you will still play . Don't get me wrong there was room for improvement in all areas , but i certainly don't think Pirri was our best forward , by far , he wasn't even in the running , sorry . Let's rebound tonight Red !!!

I give him credit for hanging tough...and going after pucks in the corner. I think you are missing the point that the just because Bruno didn't score doesn't mean it didn't impact the game. It took Pirri off the ice for nearly six minutes straight, it asked our PK to kill almost 4 mins. straight, and it sure as heck didn't let us get into any kind of rhythm .

Tonight's game is just underway.

I express the fervent hope that Ralph will not be obliged to start the offseason thread when the game is over.

I did look this morning for the suggestion that was given for a title (The Calm Before the Storm). :o

And I would now like to express the fervent hope that Ralph won't be obliged to start the postseason thread after tomorrow night's game, either. :)
