Re: RPI Recruiting II: Knowlton's Rangers (enlistments open)

I've been waiting for you to uncork a scolding to those posting non-recruit items on here.;)

Just doing my part to keep the thread count up...All I can do is draw attention to them..it's Monty and Seth's job to land them. :) One of these days -- sooner than later I think -- we're gonna land a Doc D sized recruit.

Well, I have managed to follow along as the thread has turned away from recruits. :o

Re: RPI Recruiting II: Knowlton's Rangers (enlistments open)

Odds are this kid will have 1/2 the NCAA after him...it'll be fun to watch if nothing else. My thought was that if Curadi spends next year in P'ton (I have a feeling he won't), he could strong arm the kid into coming to Troy. :)

Curadi is going to Princeton? ;)

Re: RPI Recruiting II: Knowlton's Rangers (enlistments open)

Gee, a post that actually is about a possible recruit, even though there is no reason to assume that we are after him, besides for the fact that one of our recruits plays for Penticton. :)

Ralph...you have the title of the thread at your fingertips..."Curadi gives Appert the "M'loik"! :D

Re: RPI Recruiting II: Knowlton's Rangers (enlistments open)

Blog from Penticton Vees blog: an interview with Curtis Loik - a 16 yr. old self-described "power forward" who committed to the V's for next season.

He's got Doc D size and a scoring touch:

Curtis Loik - 6'0 190lbs.
Vancouver NW Giants (BC Major Midget HL)
Current Line for : 24-25-17-42

Given that nearly every kid on this year's Vs is headed to D1, lets get this kid to Troy !

Forgot to thank you, Wicked, for giving me an idea on Hubster's visit this week to Penticton...prod the Gronk to land the Loik!

Ahhh Leinies, I remember back when it was a good local beer, not just one of the Miller stable. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Jacob_Leinenkugel_Brewing_Company
Still good beer, but no longer local. Give me an Eau Claire All Malt.

I guess I'll have to try it fresh from Chippewa Falls at some point. :) But I digress.

Love the thread title idea, babo.

We're losing four defensemen this year: Merth, Burgdörfer, Zarbo, and Jensen. Then Brutlag (though he's a forward now), Foss, and Kennedy, with Bergin leaving three years from now. We definitely need to step up grabbing D-core.

We aren't losing Zarbo this year. Although he is a Senior, he still has a year of eligibility due to the year that he sat out after transferring from Bentley. Then again, because of his lack of playing time this year, he might not be in SA's plans.

Edit: Although the years of entry aren't all known, we have four defensive commitments (Bailen, Curadi, Koudys, Quinn) and one (Leboeuf) to whom we probably have given an offer.

That was a bit questionable in my mind about whether he was still eligible. I originally had him in the next year's list, then moved him back. But my point still stands, seeing as how we currently have 8 defensemen (7 if you count Brutlag as a forward).

Discounting Koudys in this statement, who is 2011, I think it would be best to see all 3 commitments to join us next year, that is, if they all agree to doing so in May. With Brutlag playing up, I would understand if he had to go back to D should there be an emergency of an injury, but I don't think it would be wise to go through next year with only 6 regular defensemen. Of course that means someone will have to go on reserve (unless we want Brutlag to be our reserve), but it may be the safer choice. As for Leboeuf being a possibility, then that would give us a little wiggle room.

My gut feeling is that the Brutlag move to forward is permanent. I think that the target is still eight although indeed Brutlag could be moved back in an emergency, just like Vassel could probably be this year, meaning that we could live with seven.

We expect to have the following returnees next year: Foss, Kennedy, Zarbo, Bergin. Supposedly Bailen and Quinn are for next year and Curadi could be. If we sign Leboeuf that gets us to eight without Brutlag. Then there is also Greg Burgdoerfer who conceivably could be moved back as I said earlier, although there is no evidence that this is even been considered.

Seth Appert was asked about Brutlag on Saturday afternoon, and while he didn't come out and say that he would stay at forward, he did indicate that he likes what he brings to that position and that he would probably stay there.

Brutlag has shown clearly that he can play well at forward. IMHO it is better to have an average sized forward out there than a rather smallish sized defenseman. He does though add an offensive capability when he plays as a defenseman, but so far i really like what I see when he is playing up front. :)

That was my perception also, but he could always change his mind.

Clearly the team is better off defensively with Brian up front. Now whether this is the result of our forwards controlling play more as opposed to Jensen being a better D man is open to discussion. It could also just be coincidence but the results are hard to argue with.

I think you can go ahead and pencil in Bailen. If he plays another season in the USHL, they're gonna have to make him a Commissioner or something.

If I recall, the youngsters at the All-Star game were calling him "Old Man". :D

He is penciled in. :) As an '89, he isn't eligible for the USHL next year. Also his 5-year clock is running since he played for BGSU last year.

I agree, but only if your term "emergency" includes not only an obvious injury situation, but the possibility that the new blueline pairs might struggle. A risk that is not outside the realm of possibility given the questions about what Zarbo can do and the ages of Quinn & Curadi, if he comes this fall.

Given the numbers Seth has at forward, if RPI's defensive play becomes a weakness, I don't think they would hesitate to move him back.

PS: FWIW - I think Zarbo might surprise us. If Vines is half as capable as I think he is, I would bet that Mark's game has improved already - even if Jensen has out performed in gaining ice time. Zarbo skates well and he has a good shot. If Vines can clean up his decision making and positioning, he has may well surprise us.
