Re: RPI Recruiting II: Knowlton's Rangers (enlistments open)

Well, Ming and the Spinks are from the same small town of Williamstown, Ontario. So im guessing they grew up playing hockey together. If we do land Ming, it might have an effect on which school the Spinks choose. Theres 5 forwards graduating next year (Halpern, Malchuk, Helfrich, Beauregard and Polacek) so there is room for them. Id like to see some more size up front but wouldnt complain if we did end up with the twins.

Yes. It's been mentioned in the Standard Freeholder.

Let's also keep in mind the over/under on Pirri and D'Amigo leaving to go to the NHL, and assume 7 forwards leaving next year. Actually 8, now that Brutlag is up front. Out of a current pool of 18 forwards. Assuming we draw even on this year's recruits for current seniors. There's more than enough room, and possibly a need to get some more players in on the top of them, should we land them. Obviously we wouldn't want to overload too much, but maybe a decent amount in the pot like this year will result in the players stepping up their game that much more in order to earn ice time.

We could have 19 next season counting Brutlag (Helfrich, Polacek, Halpern, Beauregard, Brutlag, Malchuk, Cullen, Angers-Goulet, Rabbani, Smith, Watts, D'Amigo, Pirri, O'Grady, Lee, Laliberte, Tinordi, Higgs, and Burgdoerfer.) That may be more than what SA regards as optimal.

You wrote that eight forwards will be leaving after next season including Pirri, D'Amigo, and Brutlag. Were you counting Malchuk? He received a medical redshirt two years ago, so he will still be eligible in 2011-12.

I do agree that there will be room for both of the Spinks.

I forgot about the redshirt for Malchuk; thanks for reminding me. Even if it's 7, and given your numbers that we'll be +1 for next year (assuming they all show up), perhaps we'd want a couple more after those three. Maybe Appert is shooting high because he wants his players to really fight for the ice time and make his job difficult, or preparing for the possibility with these new recruits that they may leave early for the NHL. It's probably been a while since we've had to take that into consideration.

I would like to see us get a couple of forward recruits into the fold for 2011. I agree that SA is is well-aware that players may leave earlier -- certainly more aware than Mike Addesa appears to have been.

SA will know so much more about NHL defections than Adessa could have, simply because the entire process has become more structured and informational. The players today have advisers who communicate with the College Coaches on a regular basis. In addition, the scouts from the NHL teams talk more openly with the coaches as well. No one 'shows' their hand, but logical conclusions can be drawn when a prospect becomes 'ripe' for the picking.

Exactly

Re: RPI Recruiting II: Knowlton's Rangers (enlistments open)

Have any of you been able to develop a pattern of recruitment with ECAC schools related to over recruiting? It seems as though SA is reasoned and methodical in his approach, unlike some schools which seem to commit gajillions of players and then...what happens? I don't think I formed the question well but you get the gist...

He does seem in general to be methodical, alhough it is possible that part of the reason that Laliberte's arrival was that SA didn't expect both D'Amigo and Pirri to commit. Then again, as events have been unfolding, it seems unlikely to have been the primary reason.

I can't say that I very very closely other schools, but I think that most of the overrecruiting is not by ECAC schools.

I think you can throw O'Grady onto that list...he was definitely a late surprise -- for the good. Whatever the timing, having these 3 commit gave Seth greater flexibility to defer JL to this fall...(fingers crossed).
And I think it made a TON of sense for JL, whether or not he thought so. I saw him play in late February and he was a very skilled, yet very small kid. He needed time to grow physically and mentally. As RB has preached, he belongs in college hockey. The question remains whether he and his advisors agree?

Agree that ECAC schools are waaaay down on the list of schools stockpiling kids. The need for our kids to actually attend, participate in and absorb difficult coursework has a lot to do with this, IMO. :p

I never thought RPI had difficult coursework. I only needed to study about 168 hours per week to keep up:rolleyes: . Before I got there my counselor told me that even Phys Ed was hard there.

The difficulties I had included trying to find my buddies to give them their completed homework after they had gone to Brown's. :p Actually the coursework was quite hit-or-miss for me, depending upon the courses. I'm sure many of the current students experience the same.

We attended in somewhat different eras-but from what I have seen over the years-RPI coursework has not gotten any easier. Very few if any students at RPI can coast academically.

Try adding 20+ hours per week of rigorous exercise & video study, then add in some long bus rides...

I got punched in the nuts pretty hard. I missed a 3.0 by about thismuch which has been a complete pain in the crotch ever since. Or maybe it was that Sagie.

Either there has been a lot of grade inflation or the students are a lot smarter.

RB: I think there has been a lot of grade inflation at all levels of education with most colleges included. My daughter is a high school math teacher here in NJ and B's are now considered poor grades. Every parent expects their child to be given an A.

Usually it's not just the parent, it's the over-achieving student who strives for perfection. I was happy to come out with ONE 4.0 semester!
