Re: RPI Pros IV

From Columbus reporter @aportzline:

"Chatted with an NHL goaltending guru regarding #CBJ G Allen York. His thoughts: "There are holes in his game, which is to be expected for a guy his age. He should be in the minors right now, working out those holes. But he doesn't have any holes where it matters most. The kid's got battle and he's got heart. He works his (butt) off for pucks, and you can see the guys around him appreciate that."

As a CBJ fan, I am very excited about Yorkie. He actually reminds me a lot of Steve Mason in the year that he won the Calder. Mason is a very talented young goalie, he is just a head case and can't handle the day-to-day pressures of playing in the NHL. I think that York will be able to handle the NHL spotlight, not to mention the difficulties associated with playing on the most incompetent franchise in the world. From everything that I have read, our nucleus of young defenders is responding very positively to his presence in the crease

He seems to already be doing a great job with all the attention. Maybe it was just the thrill of winning his first (then second, and third) NHL game, but that's the most talkative I've ever seen him be in interviews. At RPI, he always seemed to shy away from the spotlight and, when he was interviewed, change the conversation to the goal-scorers and other players rather than himself. Sure he's still immediately giving credit to the team's play in front of him, but is also willing to admit that he did well. Hope this is a good sign!

Maybe because he's now shown ability at the highest level he feels he can talk. I remember during the start of the 10-11 season he almost sounded offended getting asked about a hype award. Plus, why shouldn't he give credit to his team? The more they block shots and keep the puck in the neutral or offensive zone, the less he has to do.

Sorry, that was confusing. Of course he should give credit to his team, and they deserve it. I just meant to clarify that he hadn't switched to taking all the glory/credit, just that he's more willing to acknowledge that he did well than he used to be.

I wonder if in the history of the NHL-any rookie goalie for a LAST PLACE team has ever won 3 consecutive games all against playoff bound teams? I doubt that this statistic is one that they have kept but it would be interesting to see if it has ever been done.

Re: RPI Pros IV

no shame in that loss for Yorkie. They lose to Phoenix 2-0 despite outshooting them 54-22  Mike Smith gets his 3rd consecutive shutout.

It's sad that Columbus' newfound winning ability had to go up against a ridiculously hot goalie, who managed to set the NHL record for saves in a shutout. Even Phoenix's coach said he didn't like how his team played. Did anyone see if the goals they got past York were stoppable? I noticed that the second came right after the first, so is it possible he lost his cool for a few minutes after the first and let an easier one go by? (I realize most of these questions could be answered if I looked at the highlight reel, but I am in theory studying for a Biochem test at the moment)

They were not softies although Allen had a chance on both. The first one the defense left one guy just wide open near the doorstep on the right. The second, Phoenix had 4 guys on a rush and 3 crashing the crease when they scored. He played very well and with his team generating 54 shots on 8 power plays-he deserved perhaps a better fate. But he has his save percentage and goals against average now better than the average this year for NHL goalies and that is pretty good when you play for the last place team in the league that has given up just about as many goals as anyone.

Exactly. York did well and had some fantastic saves too that made the highlights. It's got to be frustrating though when you let in 2 of 22 shots (which isn't bad) and look up and see the other guy's saved 54. Hopefully Allen just keeps playing the way he has been, and that they let him play! Mason was healthy again and backing him up last night.

Allen keeps stating his case to be in the NHL. Even if Columbus does not see it, guarantee someone else will. Nothing goes unnoticed at this level. His last 4 consecutive games, all against quality teams, shows he can perform well on an every day basis at that level. There are a few other teams that have an opening for him if Columbus does not. The future looks very bright for Mr. York!!

FWIW, the PxBxP guy, Jeff Rimmer, last night said that HC Richards said he would play Mason in 1 or both of CBJ's last 2 games.

Exactly, Allen has played himself into the NHL conversation. Once given a chance to play on a regular basis, he has performed well. The Blue Jackets have played well in front of him, but he still had to make the saves.
I would love to see him in a different organization, but if Columbus wants to make him their go to guy, I won't complain (too much).
