RPI Off-Season Thread 2012 Part III: BYOB: Bring Your Own Bratwurst

Re: RPI Off-Season Thread 2012 Part III: BYOB: Bring Your Own Bratwurst

One question-do we get to celebrate getting into the 1000 win club with 21 more wins (total years played) or with 46 more wins (modern era only)? I wonder what the number would be if we include all the games played that are now being counted as exhibitions because they were against Canadian teams?

I say we drink to both!!!!

Re: RPI Off-Season Thread 2012 Part III: BYOB: Bring Your Own Bratwurst

Agree almost completely. 100% on the first and third category. I would give a lower grade on the second but not by too much (would like to see the boys have better years more often as they become juniors and seniors) and agree totally on the 4th category. It is time! (as Sean Connery says at the beginning of the Hunt For Red October).:)

We have good goaltender development and defencive development. Sure we've had a couple All-Americans recently, but I'm not sold on offencive development. Obviously I see good in a 1-0 defencive struggle; I'm not going to be like the sports fans around this geographic area that consistently whine about more scoring. I'd certainly be happy to see CONSISTENT 3-goal games from the team, but a defencive team like ours really does need to start learning more offence.

A) You spelled offensive and defensive wrong. Even if you're a Canadian, which you aren't.

B) Chase Polacek went from being a recruit who didn't commit until the summer before his arrival on campus to a two-time Hobey Baker candidate.

If I'm SA, I've been running 1-2 hours of power play practice every day since they we're allowed on the ice. A large part of their offensive shortcomings last year was the result of an abysmal power play. They kicked up their goals/game rate from around 1.4 to 2.4 towards the end of the year vs. the first half. Supplementing that increase in offensive production with a halfway decent power play should put them up where they need to be to be competitive and give their goalie/defense a chance to swipe some games.

Could not agree more. It is time to get past the fact that SA is a wonderful recruiter and an incredible asset to the program. It is time (and probably has been for a while now) to show that he is a good bench and strategic coach who can mold his teams into ones that win more and lose less. The honeymoon has been over for some time.

OR that he needs a capable assistant on the bench to manage some things for him during the game. Great coaches recognize their shortfalls and adjust accordingly. Many people think of Geno Auriemma as one of the greatest college basketball coaches of all time; yet he gives full shared credit to Associate Head Coach Chris Dailey for the program's success. I've read that part of most practices includes having the team break down into smaller groups to work on position-specific skills with each group having an assistant coach run the drill. You can see the difference over the course of a season and over the course of a player's career in such subtle yet essential areas as footwork, court positioning, and the like.

I still recall the difference between Notre Dame and RPI in last year's game, Notre Dame was passing to spots on the ice, while RPI was passing to players.

This is very important. I'm not saying SA doesn't do this or have it in place, but your assistant coaches shouldn't be managing 'some' of the things on the bench during the game, they should be managing almost everything. A solid coaching staff in place, on the same wavelength, allows the assistants to be the ones dealing with shift to shift bs, while the coach actually watches the game. The coach needs to have the freedom during the game to assess what players are on that night, what ones aren't (both teams), and look at the game from a macro perspective. He should be able to find out what line is up next for the opposing team within about 3 seconds from a guy who has already informed guys rolling the lines on offense/defense. Basically his job is to tweak what ought to be a well oiled machine operationally, that while not always successful, has predefined game plans and scenarios in place for all potential scenarios.

Reading the RPI recruit thread, I think that we are recruiting him again. ;) Not a bad idea actually.

Wolfs would be the best bet . The rest of the bars are either a few blocks down, or have closed recently, I.e Savannahs, Jillians, Pagliacccis.

Go a few blocks south to Madison and Lombardos for good Italian food or Hill Street Pub for wings and beer.
Better yet, go up the hill to Lark Street and you will find all sorts of good places open.
Also, at the bottom of State Street you have Jack;s, though pricey and then around the corner on Broadway is Franklin's Tower.
At the end of the Pearl Street strip near The Palace is McGerary's Irish Pub and a couple of other spots.

So one could take that to mean either no one has yet stepped up to earn the honor, or that several people have been stepping, making it hard on Coach. Hopefully, the later. That said, its 3 days before the 1st game ...I 'd hope by now he'd have enough data to make the call.

I was thinking exactly what you posted when I was reading the post to which you replied....

We've had an abysmal power play since SA put his foot in the door. It's so bad I've made bets on it (and won them, mind you). Pass, pass, pass, pass, turnover.

Re: RPI Off-Season Thread 2012 Part III: BYOB: Bring Your Own Bratwurst

Four things make a good college hockey coach: Good recruiting, good player development, good community involvement, and good bench presence. I'd argue Seth has about 2 3/4 of these elements - the first, the third, and 3/4 of the second. Wish he weren't still growing on the fourth and even he would probably volunteer that he's got to start showing some solidity on it, but it's not enough right now. I see the potential, it's up to him to grab it.

10 years without advancing to the ECAC semis is unacceptable. The 2011 run to the NCAAs was a step in the right direction, this year's team overall needs to be an improvement over last year's.

Thatisall.
I think that the 3/4 part is generous.

You cannot go wrong with Jack's. Food has always been great.:)

Cannot argue in any way with B. Chase was one of the very few success stories of development. But over the past 7 years I cannot think of too many others. That is one place where i would love to see SA show us something more. Just my 2¢

For as many years as i can remember-I have kept hoping that we would concentrate more on having effective special teams. Having a potent power play and being able to defend well short handed just seems to decide so many games. I am not sure how many minutes are spent either a man up or a man down per game-but often that makes the difference.

Well, it used to be Pass, pass, pass, pass, Chase. But without that last year we looked lost.

Apologies if it's already been posted, but here's Ken Schott's article from RPI media day (apparently yesterday), with interviews with Coach, Bailen, and Lee. From the way they mention not having Chase Polacek to rely on anymore, you'd think he graduated this past May instead of two years ago. I wonder if the team relied on him more even than we thought, and it seems that adjusting to the lack of Polacek/Helfrich/Brutlag, etc. was harder than anyone expected and could possible account for part of last season's early struggles.

Just my two cents.

Re: RPI Off-Season Thread 2012 Part III: BYOB: Bring Your Own Bratwurst

Appert expects Bokenfohr to contribute right away. I guess he would be saying good bye to his golfing buddies.
I suspect that was the original understanding with the golf coach. What will be interesting will be to see if he returns there for spring golf when the Liberty League tourney will take place.

Re: RPI Off-Season Thread 2012 Part III: BYOB: Bring Your Own Bratwurst

Let's not go that far.

Ok maybe that's a bit too far. Hopefully someone develops into the garbage collector who scores goals by being in the right spot on the ice instead of through pure skill this year. That guy is crucial on a good PP.
