RPI Off-Season Thread 2012 Part III: BYOB: Bring Your Own Bratwurst

Re: RPI Off-Season Thread 2012 Part III: BYOB: Bring Your Own Bratwurst

For the football fans- at the the half- RPI 28 (with a ton of offense today) and Castleton 14. I know very little about this opponent so I do not know if this is expected or not. The LL league season awaits and the games will surely get tougher with Hobart and Springfield and it is never easy to win the Dutchman's Shoes.

Re: RPI Off-Season Thread 2012 Part III: BYOB: Bring Your Own Bratwurst

Football final RPI 56 Castleton 35. Over 1000 yards of total offense between the two teams. Castleton almost exclusively through the air as they passed 57 times. RPI is now 2-0 and has moved the ball on the ground and through the air well in the first two games. But the season really starts now.

According to Kurt Stutt, it's the first football game that RPI has won in Vermont since 1945. (First they have played there since 1972.)

You and I both can recall long stretches where we did not win in any states.

Our V2's buzz bombed Middlebury? ;) More amazed we hadn't played in green mountain country since '72.

As I recall, there's a great story from Salfi's early days... we were playing at Middlebury and game day came but the afternoon bus never arrived... it was realized no one had called, there would be no bus... so they carpooled to Middlebury.

We weren't in any state to win a game. I believe I was in the 3rd, 4th, 5th, 6th and 7th grades during those dark football years. Paleozoic era.

Kudos to the Adk. Jr. Wings. First home game @ HFH tonight. Though they lost, 3-1 to the Suffolk Juniors, it was a huge improvement over what became a very stale product in the CD Selects. A crowd of about 150 people (CD S's usually had about 20), music & a PA! Quality hockey. Next home game is tomorrow morning @ 11:15 vs Suffolk.... http://www.hometeamsonline.com/teams/?u=adirondackjrwings&s=hockey&t=c

In honor of Bryan Vines, Nolan Graham, Kevin Anderson, Colette (Bredin) Youlen, and Brent Hill, today is 16 September 2012. There are 20 days until RPI's next game.

This is based upon 6 October for the start of next season.

That is the day that an exhibition game is scheduled.

Neither team has a #20, so it's a good time as any to mention the ACs and Kevin Anderson too.

Not many who post on here can remember those dismal football years of the early to mid 60's. Very different over the past 15-20+ years. This year is a tough one to predict as we have a very tough in league schedule coming up-Hobart is truly the top test for us. They have been very good now for several years and are again nationally ranked. In addition, we seem to be a very small team in comparison (except at QB!). Springfield is never easy and even though Union is now 0-3, that will mean very little when it comes to playing against us.

Prospects look fairly sunny, at least, for beating St. Lawrence, who lost by 21 points yesterday to the same Alfred team RPI beat by 18. :)

I was a bit surprised by our performance against Alfred. They were not a top 25 team in pre season rankings but many felt they were a fairly good team that could challenge for their league top spots. Castleton was different-I expected us to handle them easily-and we did score a ton of points but they moved the ball through the air for a substantial amount of yardage and did score 35 points against our defense. The jury is still out for us-I suspect the success of the season will be determined by the Hobart, Springfield, and of course Union games. For someone like me-who was around to watch RPI football in the early 60's-just starting the season with 2 fairly easy victories is just great. Just before i started following RPI football, Vermont came into Troy and a hung up an 82-6 drubbing on us. That year we were outscored 337-36. And it did not get much better for a couple years after that. I don't ask for or expect national Championships (although 1985 was just a wonderful year) but I do swell with pride when we have a competitive team that gets some National attention.:)

One thing Kurt did mention on the radio was that Castleton used the no-huddle. At least we were able to shut that down as the game went on; the hockey team could take a lesson from that.

I used to have this book called "The Football Hall of Shame" about boneheaded plays/decisions/etc. Ed Jontos made the book for a decision that he made. Something about one of his players not having the right size shoes, so he had everyone on the team take their shoes off to check the size. Would't you know, not one player on RPI's team had the correct size, but after the game, Coach Jontos took off his shoes, and, yep, they were the same size needed. This was in the 40's and even predates Ralph.

Is discussing Craig Bokenfohr's golf accomplishments on-topic? For the second straight week he did better on the second day with a 73. http://www.rpiathletics.com/news/2012/9/16/MGOLF_0916125758.aspx. So did most of the others.
