Re: RPI Off-Season Thread 2012: An Off-Season to Be Optimistic

I thought that hab was referring to SUNY Binghampton, when he wrote "the other end of #7". ;)
Yes, I know that netiher Troy nor Binghampton is at an end of Route 7, but Binghampton is a lot closer than Schenectady.

When are Conklin and Hoosick going to play hockey? :p:D

Re: RPI Off-Season Thread 2012: An Off-Season to Be Optimistic

Today is 3 April 2012. There are 186 days until RPI's next game.

This is based upon 6 October for the start of next season.

That is the day that an exhibition game is supposedly scheduled.

The Red Wings have three games left in the regular season. Ty Conklin might play in one of them, if they don't need the win to secure home ice for the first round of the playoffs.

You will have to wait until next winter, when they flood the Reynolds-Gilchrest Skating Rink again, for any hockey in the Town of Hoosick. ;)

It is going to be a long summer, but Dr. D. makes an heroic effort to steer our minds back to RPI hockey.;)

Personally, at this time, it is very hard to think about RPI hockey.:)

Re: RPI Off-Season Thread 2012: An Off-Season to Be Optimistic

RB asked this several pages back regarding the date for the Men's Hockey Banquet. I just received an email from Kevin Beatie; it's May 5th....@ the Alumni House....cocktails are from 6-6:30 followed by dinner/program. He didn't specify the cost, I'll assume it's about the same as last year ($30).

These are the awards handed out last year.

• Most Valuable Player: Chase Polacek & Allen York
• Best Defensive Player: Jeff Foss
• Top Rookie: Brock Higgs
• Most Inspirational: John Kennedy & Ben Mayo
• Community Service: John Kennedy & Justin Smith
• Scholar-Athlete: Alex Angers-Goulet
• Most Improved: C.J. Lee

Guesses at this year
• Most Valuable Player: Higgs
• Best Defensive Player: Bergin
• Top Rookie: Leonard
• Most Inspirational: perhaps Smith, but I really don't know
• Community Service: No idea, perhaps Smith again
• Scholar-Athlete: perhaps AAG again, not that I know
• Most Improved: could be Lee again or perhaps Merriam

The odds are that I don't have any of them correct. Any other guesses?

Most Improved I would guess either Matt Tinordi or Luke Curadi, or as a longshot, the team.

Tinordi is a good choice. I would never pick a freshman as most improved because I regard the award is an improvement over the previous season at RPI, but I am pretty sure that the award has been awarded to freshman before, so your other choices also are possible.

The biggest reason I say Luke is because of the improvement from how he started the season (only seeing ice in practice) to getting himself to the point where he has a regular spot in the lineup, not to mention the performance he has made on the ice in the later parts of the season.

Also, when Kennedy got Most Improved in the 2008-09 season I believe it was, wasn't it because of the improvement over just that season itself?

Re: RPI Off-Season Thread 2012: An Off-Season to Be Optimistic

There a few things I despise more than sweeping generalities...(Ethanol in my gasoline and Al Sharpton come to mind, but I digress..)

Many of the posters here may very well detest Union, but we certainly appreciate what they have accomplished... two very different things. I have stated more times than I care to mention that Union was the best college team that I saw play -- both this season AND last.

That said, this ISN'T the Union fan club blog. If you're looking for Dutch cheerleading, try Schott's blog.

WHOA! I did say "a few comments on this thread" not "all", or even "most", and I should have said "some RPI fans" to avoid being accused of "sweeping generalities". But, to be clear, I am an RPI fan and was replying to comments on THIS thread, not a Union thread. Perhaps it is the fact that I don't "detest Union" (will certainly cheer for them against anyone outside the ECAC) that rankled?

Does best defensive player need be a defenseman? Could it possibly be a defensive forward?

Never heard of Conklin NY, eh? That's the western end of NY 7.

Re: RPI Off-Season Thread 2012: An Off-Season to Be Optimistic

Two familiar faces-Jeff Foss #3 in blue and Brandon Pirri #27 in red. I know, I know, wrong thread.

A good old RPI-Colgate lock-up with Foss and Morin. Then it seemed like Pirri and Foss caught up with each other and Foss said something where Brandon started laughing. Wonder what it was. Oh, I know. "Union made it to the Frozen Four." :D

Nope, not familiar with Conklin, NY at all.

I grew up in Hoosick Falls, one street over from the site of the present Reynolds-Gilchrest rink, though it wasn't built until after I had moved away.
