Re: RPI Off-Season Thread 2012: An Off-Season to Be Optimistic

Not really surprised by that announcement. :( That 12th spot in Hockey East was pretty much UConns to lose and they decided to go for it, which is probably a good move on their part. Guessing they will have to cut a sport or two to get by Title IX and play some/all their games in Hartford until they expand the current rink or build a new one. As for RPI, we just have to hope the Ivy presidents dont all the sudden decide to pull the plug on the ECAC and start up their own conference or there is good chance we end up in league with the handful of western AHA teams that want out and the six other non-Ivy ECAC teams.

No worries RH, SA and I have a plan.

Re: RPI Off-Season Thread 2012: An Off-Season to Be Optimistic

RPI fan first. Like seeing ECAC in FF. Union going all the way would be a great story for Jooris family. PP peaked at average with BP and JDA. I also would like to see less line changing. It worked well at the end of the season. I'm optimistic about next season. Hoping the coaching doesn't regress.

It sounds like you might be questioning what it is we do in practice? I have wondered the same thing for years. Especially when our pp has not been good since SA came on board other than Pirri and D'Amigo year. Changing lines all the time probably doesn't help either. Perhaps SA needs a better support staff.

Today is 29 March 2012. There are 191 days until RPI's next game.

This is based upon 6 October for the start of next season.

That is the day that an exhibition game is supposedly scheduled.

This is one of the issues with just captain's "practices" before the season starts (although I'm sure the same would happen if the coaches were allowed to start with the kids in July or August), in that if you want to see less line shuffling, then the staff has to get lucky on the first shot. Granted the kids have a couple months to gel and start to form these line bonds, but unless you have a crystal ball, you're going to see these growing pains.

I knew that we should have signed the Spink twins. :( Two thirds of a line plus they played on a line with JL for a while. (JL did look good with Neal and Haggerty at the end of the year.)

Shoulda coulda wouldas, I'm not going to cry over it. However, one thing we have seen, and I think it was very evident with Helfrich/Polacek/Halpern, is that line combinations that work well in one year won't necessarily work well the next. That is certainly an advantage the coaching staff has in having the kids under their wing for a year, in that they can see exactly what a player has to offer, and can then find another player that is able to complement his abilities in order to strengthen both players.

It seems that years ago we kept lines together much more. Both Fridgen and Appert seem to tinker with them all year.

It is a lot easier to keep lines together when you are winning most of your games.;)Plus the number of injuries seems to have exploded in the past few years for a lot of teams. We have certainly had our share over the past couple years.

When you score as little as we did in the first half of the season, you have to do something. Switching the lines seems to be the obvious thing. Chemistry doesn't always happen. We were much better at the end of the season.
Something to build on.

In the one game I saw of JL playing with the Spinks twins, JL clearly made them better. One thing that got me at the time was how one of the Spinks would take forever to settle the puck on his stick when receiving a pass from JL on the PP, even if the pass was on the mark and he was open. I'm not sure how keeping this line intact would have translated to play at the NCAA level. My guess is that the chemistry would have been overwhelmed by the greatly elevated level of the competition, at least through the early part of the year. But, this is just my opinion and just one game that I saw.
