Re: RPI Off-Season Thread 2012: An Off-Season to Be Optimistic

Ya just gotta love the fact that although Union has no athlectic scholarships and no NHL draftees, their coach is still able to take them to the final four, in his first year, by teaching them to play as a team and giving them a system that works..Maybe Dr. Shirley should offer him a big bump before some one else does.

I highly doubt that they're not getting compensated with scholarship-function money elsewhere. Just because it isn't explicitly called the "Union College Hockey Scholarship" on their financial aid package doesn't mean they're not getting aid based on it. Disclaimer: I have no hard proof for this and I'm going on intuition/common sense, but I will flat-out admit that now.

Does the NHL draft really mean anything when you have the blood relatives of NHL team members playing on the active roster, and there's talent scouts watching your every move and waiting for your season to end to make you an offer to go to the pros?

Maybe, too, as much as this doesn't seem to explicitly be the case, they actually wanted to play at Union College regardless of the financial aspect of going there.

Not trying to be smarmy here, asking legitimate questions/making points :)

You missed the point completly.maybe i was too opaque.....small school,,,first year coach....no highly touted recruits.,properly motivated..playing as a team...with a scheme that is both well designed ,taught and implemented. and a part time goalie coach who would never change a goaltenders style .

Are you implying Union has violated its own rules as they relate to athlectic scholarships?:)

This has more to do with expressing a behavioral characteristic called humor (although factual).:) You are more a fit for the behavioral characteristic of passive-aggressive. You are angered by the fact your "great coach" doesn't have the answer. BTW, this last statement is also my putrid attempt at humor!!

The coach inherited a very good hockey team. And he deserves credit for not trying to change much. They have looked great in the tournament and I will be rooting for them all the way. Not only because it would really help the ECAC, but it will kick up the rivalry. They took it to us this year and have had our number for a couple of years, yet we don't really take them seriously. If they come back with a trophy, we will have to start looking at them as a real threat to our own program.
I am looking forward to next year already.

It's called the trap.

Its called winning hockey. They skate, they hit, and they make life miserable for the opposition. I don't like Union, but I have been watching hockey for over 50 years, and they are playing winning hockey.

It's still the trap ... it's ruining hockey. If they make it to the final, BC will blow their doors off. My hats off to them though...maybe this winning will make them want to upgrade the dump in the Electric City or at least add a urinal or two.

I actually enjoy our sparring. No one will fight with me anymore. Have a good one my friend.

Isn't the whole place pretty much a urinal? ;)

Aspy-i am not so sure. Union is big and fast and has as good a defense as any team BC will have faced. They are indeed the best representative the ECAC had this year. For a team to beat them it takes several things-you have to score first, you have to hit them hard without taking penalties, and you can't let down for a moment. They have to be the favorite against Ferris and I am not so sure BC will just blow by Minnesota anyway. Two number 1 seeds are already gone and it is conceivable that Union can go all the way without facing the number 1 seed in any game and that could make the path a tad easier. But, i also pick BC to win it all-but I am pretty sure they will have their hands full with Union.

That is exactly the way I see it Doc. They look very good, and I don't see a lot of trap in their game.
But if that is what you see Aspy, don't watch them.
I have said this before, if they are playing a trap (and I don't think that they are) and getting to the frozen four, I sure wish that we were doing some of that. JMO

If they win, I will be coming to Jersey to drink with you and Jenny.

Re: RPI Off-Season Thread 2012: An Off-Season to Be Optimistic

Today is 27 March 2012. There are 193 days until RPI's next game.

This is based upon 6 October for the start of next season.

That is the day that an exhibition game is supposedly scheduled.

Re: RPI Off-Season Thread 2012: An Off-Season to Be Optimistic

With the recent success of the Ivys and now with a surging Union program, im starting to wonder if there is some kind of advantage playing without athletic scholarships in the ECAC... If you look back, only 2 of the last 10 regular season champions were using the full 18 (SLU-07,CCT-08) and just 1 of the last 10 tournament champions used the full amount (CCT-07). Maybe its just a coinsidence but its sure starting to look like it makes a difference. Perhaps the schools that cant use athletic scholarships are getting the older, more mature players, compared to the younger players you usually pick up using a scholarship and thats where the difference is?

Re: RPI Off-Season Thread 2012: An Off-Season to Be Optimistic

According to numbers that I, hopefully correctly, copied from Kurt Stutt's website, in a total of 1959 games starting in 1901-2, RPI's record is 979-866-114 for a .529 winning percentage. I predict that we will reach 1000 wins next season. (I do tend to be optimistic in the off-season. :) )

The U goaltender made 20 and 19 saves for a 2 day total of 39 not looking at the quality of those saves just the number thats low so either the opposing teams were coached not to shoot or U plays we won't call it a trap we will call it a "defensive posture".(they play a style much like Cornell but IMO they are much better @ it than Cornell whether you like it or not it is a winning system and is here to stay)As for rooting for them lets put it this way I won't root against them but I won't root for them either just like I didn't root for the Red Sox to win the world series enough said.
