Re: RPI Off-Season Thread 2012: An Off-Season to Be Optimistic

They have to win or tie against Colgate Doc.....should be a thrilla!

Do they need any outside help? Or does a tie or better assure them of a seed? It would make me feel a bit better about our season if one of the seeds was a team that could not beat us in 2 tries this year.

Re: RPI Off-Season Thread 2012: An Off-Season to Be Optimistic

Even without Bergin, we will have a very strong defense. However, the 8 top scorers you mention did not produce very much. I look for great improvement from at least five of those eight, based on the way they closed out the season.
I believe that we could be a big surprise to the league at least for the first part of the season.

Agreed-we did not have a 10 goal scorer on this team. On paper even returning 8 top scorers does not seem like much-but you are so right-they were a different team late in the season and began to show what they could accomplish on offense a bit more. Add the incoming freshmen-especially Zalewsky-and perhaps we can reach that 3+ goals a game we need to get to.

Re: RPI Off-Season Thread 2012: An Off-Season to Be Optimistic

Could be-but Harvard and Union have seemed to put everything together at just the right time. I wonder if Cornell will have the PWR now to get an NCAA bid? I imagine they may have to win the consolation game today.

They have to win or tie according to Jayson Moy's article. The ECAC is in a position where it can still get from 1 to 3 bids.

Much as i am an RPI fan against anyone-and an ECAC fan second-I guess I root for Harvard and Cornell today.

Me too, but I look at it is rooting against Union and Colgate. That's easier to stomach. :D

I justify rooting for Harvard as rooting for another team that did not manage to beat us this year. Same for Cornell.

I just can't bring myself to root for Cornell against any other ECAC team except Clarkson.
If they get to the NCAA tournament, then maybe I will be able to get on their bandwagon.

I will be rooting for Harvard and Colgate today.

Thanks for the info. I am surprised that SA can afford to keep the scholarship available.

I am far from expert on red shirting, but I would think there's no guarantee that Appert would offer him athletic $$$, but could invite him back to play for his graduate year. He's a Dean's List student, so he might qualify for some scholly/grant money from Lally.

ABC. Anybody But Cornell.

Re: RPI Off-Season Thread 2012: An Off-Season to Be Optimistic

Where did this Harvard team come from? 18 goals in their last three games, Union better be ready.
Also, I watched the last period of the Maine/BU game last night and found that the referees for that game are as inept as any I have seen in the ECAC. The entire crew missed penalty calls, offside calls, and even icing calls.
All in one period. I am beginning to think that it is a College Hockey thing and not just the ECAC. I don't know who the officials were, maybe the were ECAC officials used for the HE championships.
Just a disgrace. :eek::mad:
You read my mind. I too was watching & couldn't believe the ineptness of the officials. Even the announcer made a comment about the big production of the faceoffs.

Re: RPI Off-Season Thread 2012: An Off-Season to Be Optimistic

And i thought I was paranoid! I had a very similar thought though.:)

Colgate 10 penalties for 31 minutes
Cornell 5 penalties for 10 minutes

What's that saying that kissinger coined about being parnoid :D

Re: RPI Off-Season Thread 2012: An Off-Season to Be Optimistic

It certainly seems that way. I dont think its any secret the Ivy schools are also getting the majority of the higher rated recruits within the league either. Which would definately be one of the reasons why the league has been more Ivy dominated in the past ten years or so. Back in the fall, I added up all the ECAC alums currently playing in the NHL and from what I recall there was almost twice as many Ivy alums then non-ivy league alums in the big show.
Just wanted to follow up with some numbers since I was bored this afternoon waiting for some of the championship games to start on tv. ECAC alums currently on an NHL active roster added up with 20 Ivy players to only 9 non-Ivys and that number is including Thomas and St.Louis from UVM. There were 5 other Ivy players and 6 other non-Ivy players that have seen NHL game action this season but are in the minor leagues right now.

NHL drafted players that were on ECAC rosters this past season ended up with 22 for the Ivys and 16 for the non-Ivys (10 of the 16 non-Ivys played for CCT or Colgate; I also included Kasdorf for RPI in that total as well, even though he isnt on the RPI roster yet).

Finally, I added up the players listed on the current NHL CSB mid-term rankings that are committed to ECAC schools and those numbers were 11 future Ivy players to 4 future non-Ivys with QU taking 3 out of the 4.

Thanks for doing the legwork RH18. I guess this fits with the numbers I posted earlier about the top 4 finishers in the ECAC since 2001. Not sure where all of this is going-I don't think anyone knows. But one thing is for certain-things will change in NCAA hockey and pretty soon i would imagine.
