A short clip of Polacek's overtime penalty shot game-winner taken by a friend with us at the game:

I didn't realize that he went 5 hole.

Takes some guts to go 5 hole with the game on the line. Colgates streak of bad luck goes on. I for one do not want to see them come playoffs.

This was posted over in the Colgate thread:
"The fact that we switched directions at the start of OT didn't help either -- the RPI fans in attendance were right behind Mihalik and were probably heckling him to death and wrecking his psyche all the way up to the actual shot. Had we kept our usual "shoot at the east (end zone seating) goal" for OT maybe something different would have happened..."

Now I wasnt at the game and saw in the box score the attendace was under 900 people, but you gotta believe that no matter the amount of heckling going on, Chase was dead set on scoring a goal. By the way the Colgate thread is calling for some heads to roll starting at the top with the AD...oh boy.

I'd like to think we got in his head, with a string of "sieve, sieve, sieve" and "Mihalik, Mihalik, Mihalik" before the shot, but if there's anyone on the team you want taking that shot, it's Chase. The goalie didn't make it hard on him, that's for sure. Any number of shots would have been successful. A little surprising as he played well for the rest of the game.

As for the attendance...the place was an absolute tomb. There were a fair number of people there but they didn't make a peep. There were maybe 2-3 cheers from Colgate fans over three periods, not counting "and RPI still sucks!" from about 10 fans each time Colgate killed a penalty.

Had the distinct honor and pleasure of meeting F Dude and B12. As always, GR and the gang were respectful and LOUD!!! They embody what is great about CH. Obvious observations time - RPI was more intense and focused last night, have to find scoring, PP needs to improve or we are toast.

P.S. I saw Red Cloud enter the building right before the penalty shot, that guy is money.

I was a bit concerned about Chase taking the shot, because he hadn't hit one yet in his college career, including exhibition games, Governor's Cup, and the Bryce Goal Rush. Oh well, when it counts, he puts it in, and that's what matters.

Had this game been against Union, though, I'm sure we'd be hearing from the press, "How the heck are you going to top THAT?!"

Looks like the puck went over the top of the right pad not the 5 hole. Either way it was a victory rather than a loss or 5 minute desperate attempt at a tie-congrats to the team.

It was nice to meet you, too, AspyDad, but I'm not sure I can respect you with your choice of NHL teams! :D ;)

The boys really need a sweep this weekend to stay in the hunt for a bye.

I watched it on 1080P 'til my eyes were blurry ... looks to me like it went inside the right pad..i.e. five hole

Watching it live last night, I saw it go stick side, and I thought it was over the shoulder. Watching the video this afternoon, I thought it went between his pad and the shoulder, not five-hole.

I uploaded a frame-by-frame set of pictures that I took with VLC to Flickr (1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6). Going frame-by-frame, I lose the puck at frame 3, but I think that the puck goes into the net way too high for it to be a five-hole shot. Of course, just my opinion.

As far as I can recall sitting right behind it, CP did indeed beat him to the right side, not five-hole. I commented right after that Chase had an easy shot inside the post as the goalie didn't do much to close off that side of the net.

This conversation seems so familiar...

I'm surprised that they switched ends at the start of OT.

A long time ago, that used to be customary, but then it started to become common practice, during the final seconds of the third period when the score was tied, for goalkeepers to try to chop up the ice in front of their goal, knowing that when OT started, the other team's goalie would be at that end and the bad ice might lead to a bad bounce and a goal.

I thought that, in order to forestall such shenanigans, the NCAA had passed a rule a number of years ago that overtime would be played with the teams shooting at the same end where they had shot in the third.

The NCAA reinstated the rule, effective this season, that teams change ends for OT. Doesn't seem to make sense in the regular season when they don't clean the ice between the end of the 3rd and OT.

Did the puck go in? Did we win the game? The answer to both is yes, conversation over about if it went 5 hole or not. Time to look forward to next weekend and getting points at home.

Thanks for the info, JCrawford.

Note to Coach - have Yorkie start working on his ice-chopping technique for the end of the third period. :D
