RPI III: Revenge of the Seth

Re: RPI III: Revenge of the Seth

And there's no way that Nieuwendyk should be in before Oates or Ciccarelli, never mind the Russians who are obviously getting dicked over by Canadian media. It was shocking when Igor Larionov got in as fast as he did.

Larionov had a long enough NHL career to get properly noticed. Kharlamov was a tragic story. Tretiak was fairly token even though he quite obviously belongs.

Re: RPI III: Revenge of the Seth

Oops. You are correct sir. Maybe Joe N waits a year and then joins the 3 Russians in a Red themed class of 2011.

Unfortunately, the Russians don't get much attention. People in Canada are too eager to push for Doug Gilmour and Dave Andreychuk. Also, next year brings Eric Lindros into the argument pool so that's an entirely different level of drama.

Oates gets punished for playing too long and being called a compiler. He's also often spun for being a coattail rider (with Hull in St. Louis and Neely in Boston) whereas not many big media people make the case that Oates did more for their careers than any other centers did for them otherwise. Ciccarelli gets off-ice stuff held against him and he too is accused of being a compiler as he never had a 50 goal season yet still scored over 600 goals.

Hockey writers might be as dumb as baseball writers. At least the last two years the newly eligible member classes have been ridiculously stacked, three years ago they didn't have much of an excuse to not vote in Oates (it was his first year of eligibility) and the foreseeable future could make things needlessly difficult for him.

Interesting take-One would think being 6th all time in assists would an almost automatic vote in for Oates-but you are correct. There is no way to account for how the writers vote and what influences them. 600 goals for Ciccarelli likewise should make him a no brainer to get in.

Re: RPI III: Revenge of the Seth

Oates should be a NHL HOFer, period. I thought it was a mistake when the Wings traded him, he was a perfect compliment to Yzerman giving the Wings two strong centers at the time. So, he liked to set people up and not score goals. Big deal. His defensive game was underrated and he was an ironman.

But, Mohawk is right, Canadians will vote for Joe Niewendyk, and Dino will get looked over as well- maybe because of the little off ice issues he had.

Re: RPI III: Revenge of the Seth

Wings made a couple of real bonehead trades there in the 80s. Trading Oates and another player to St. Louis for a washed up Bernie Federko and Tony McKegney. They also traded Adam Graves, Petr Klima, Joe Murphy and Jeff Sharples to Edmonton for Jimmy Carson, Kevin McClelland and a 5th round pick.

Oates went on to have his huge career and team up with Brett Hull in St. Louis while Graves, Murphy and Klima all won the Stanley Cup with Edmonton in 1990. Imagine the potential dynasty the Red Wings could've been rolling with had they not made those two deals alone.

Re: RPI III: Revenge of the Seth

"border line hall of famer"? I agree with whoever said future hall of famer. Sixth all time in NHL assists. The following players have more assists per game than Adam Oates in their NHL careers: Wayne Gretzky, Mario Lemieux, Bobby Orr. Sure, he wasn't a big goal scorer, but he still scored 341, and played good defense from a forward position. Also, to address another recent topic, I am happy that Union is playing well because we suffered for many years because Union was perennially so terrible that everybody would rest their starting goalies against them and generally sleep on them because we were the only team that other teams really had to prepare for that weekend.

By saying border line I meant he could get in, and couldnt. Of course I'd love to see him get in, but we all knows how these things go.

Wow. Jeff Sharples played for the Capital District Isles, a name from the past.

Re: RPI III: Revenge of the Seth

Mikhailov, Petrov, Oates, Ciccarelli, Gilmour.

GLM, in a subsequent post you made it clear that only four players can make the Hall of Fame in any given year, but you seemed to have been nominating five in this post.

Were you referring to the old referee, Lloyd Gilmour, rather than the player, Doug Gilmour?

Nah, those are just the next five I'd like to see get in, I know that it'll never work out that four will get in one year and the other one will be in the following year.

I think those Russian players will continue to wait for a while before they're ever added, which is very unfortunate.

Getting things back on track....

I fear the Harvard game will be a trap game this weekend. I'll blame this on previous teams implanting that mind-set in me.

We should be favored in that game, but you're absolutely right. For me as well, it's just a learned expectation of let-downs over the last decade that evokes this concern.

Re: RPI III: Revenge of the Seth

It's the third of four Huxley Sucks games this weekend. (I almost wrote Coakley. ;) )

Lets not get ahead of ourselves. Dartmouth first. If we look past them to Harvard, we will certainly lose the first game of the weekend.
We are not that good yet that we can look beyond anyone.
I expect a 4 point weekend because we are more talented than our opponents, but the most talented team doesn't always win.
We need to be focused in both games.

Re: RPI III: Revenge of the Seth

I was looking at the fight song there.

For dear old Rensselaer, we all must do our part
True to old Rensselaer, we'll always strive to be

 ;)

Wait...... those aren't the words...... darn PC-ness.....

BTW, I thought we'll should be will, so I fixed the bolds. Of course you would know much better than me, Ralph.

Re: RPI III: Revenge of the Seth

OK Then, my mistake. I thought it would be "True sons of Rensselaer will always strive to be", but like I said, you know better.

But I digress; Dartmouth coming up this Friday. I'm sure the boys have been working hard in practice, getting out of the old habits of passing the puck too much and looking more towards getting the puck on net while our guy is still in front. If anything we should have learned from the Q-Pac and Princeton game, is that most of our goals were not from the first shot. They were from the second and third chances. If their goalie is going to give up those rebounds, then we need to exploit it.
