Re: RPI III: Revenge of the Seth
Unfortunately, the Russians don't get much attention. People in Canada are too eager to push for Doug Gilmour and Dave Andreychuk. Also, next year brings Eric Lindros into the argument pool so that's an entirely different level of drama.
Oates gets punished for playing too long and being called a compiler. He's also often spun for being a coattail rider (with Hull in St. Louis and Neely in Boston) whereas not many big media people make the case that Oates did more for their careers than any other centers did for them otherwise. Ciccarelli gets off-ice stuff held against him and he too is accused of being a compiler as he never had a 50 goal season yet still scored over 600 goals.
Hockey writers might be as dumb as baseball writers. At least the last two years the newly eligible member classes have been ridiculously stacked, three years ago they didn't have much of an excuse to not vote in Oates (it was his first year of eligibility) and the foreseeable future could make things needlessly difficult for him.
I doubt Lindros has much of a shot. (That's JMO).
I think anyone who knows hockey is able to appreciate Adam for what he did. Oates maybe played a year or two too long but it didn't really help his stats much. In fact, it probably hurt him by reducing his PPG numbers.
Hockey writers might be dumb but that's somewhat irrelevant. The HOF committee is composed of ex players, GM's and some media types. Look at the committee now and there are very few media types there (Mike Emerick is one). Interestingly, Harry Sinden is on the committee. This might be the real issue. Adam asked out of Boston once it became clear that the Bruin's we too cheap to ever win a cup (prior to the new collective bargaining). He basically said as much on his way out and I fear that so long as Harry is there Adam is at a real disadvantage. Probably the same thing holds for Don Cherry's chances (he and Harry don't get along).
Per WIKI, here is the present committee:
As of March 2009, the selection committee consists of: co-chairmen James M. Gregory and Pat Quinn as well as Scotty Bowman, David Branch, Colin Campbell, John Davidson, Eric Duhatschek, Jan-Ake Edvinsson, Mike Emrick, Michael Farber, Mike Gartner, Dick Irvin, Jr., Lanny McDonald, Yvon Pedneault, Serge Savard, Harry Sinden, Peter Stastny and Bill Torrey.
