RPI III: Revenge of the Seth

Re: RPI III: Revenge of the Seth

Lets not get ahead of ourselves. Dartmouth first. If we look past them to Harvard, we will certainly lose the first game of the weekend.

No one's looking past them. Calling Harvard a trap game doesn't disrespect Dartmouth, it's just stating an opinion.

Re: RPI III: Revenge of the Seth

Unfortunately, the Russians don't get much attention. People in Canada are too eager to push for Doug Gilmour and Dave Andreychuk. Also, next year brings Eric Lindros into the argument pool so that's an entirely different level of drama.

Oates gets punished for playing too long and being called a compiler. He's also often spun for being a coattail rider (with Hull in St. Louis and Neely in Boston) whereas not many big media people make the case that Oates did more for their careers than any other centers did for them otherwise. Ciccarelli gets off-ice stuff held against him and he too is accused of being a compiler as he never had a 50 goal season yet still scored over 600 goals.

Hockey writers might be as dumb as baseball writers. At least the last two years the newly eligible member classes have been ridiculously stacked, three years ago they didn't have much of an excuse to not vote in Oates (it was his first year of eligibility) and the foreseeable future could make things needlessly difficult for him.

I know you are not saying that Oates is a coattail ride and a compiler, just quoting others arguments against him. Obviously, we all recognize, as you mentioned, that those players had some of their best years when on Oates' line. However, someone calling him a compiler is just factually wrong. When players play for a long time and compile, they may stack points, but it hurts their points per game. Oates' is 6th in assists, and still 6th is assists per game (I mistakenly quoted him as 4th before). If Oates' is a compiler and therefore not deserving of the Hall of Fame, then I guess we should kick Ron Francis out since he has less points per game then Oates. I know he has 2 Stanley Cups, but hockey is such a team sport that championships don't mean nearly as much to me as far as the Hall of Fame as a sport like basketball where if you are really that good you should be able to single-handedly elevate an average team to a title contender.

We are not that good yet that we can look beyond anyone.
I expect a 4 point weekend because we are more talented than our opponents, but the most talented team doesn't always win.
We need to be focused in both games.

Ahhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh men!

Re: RPI III: Revenge of the Seth

Actually, in this league, I don't think anyone can look past anyone. That's why they play the games. I think during the playoffs, Dartmouth may have seen us as easy-peasy, allowing us a mental edge and being able to sweep them, and so we better not do the same as what happened last year with the roles reversed.

I doubt Lindros has much of a shot. (That's JMO).

I think anyone who knows hockey is able to appreciate Adam for what he did. Oates maybe played a year or two too long but it didn't really help his stats much. In fact, it probably hurt him by reducing his PPG numbers.

Hockey writers might be dumb but that's somewhat irrelevant. The HOF committee is composed of ex players, GM's and some media types. Look at the committee now and there are very few media types there (Mike Emerick is one). Interestingly, Harry Sinden is on the committee. This might be the real issue. Adam asked out of Boston once it became clear that the Bruin's we too cheap to ever win a cup (prior to the new collective bargaining). He basically said as much on his way out and I fear that so long as Harry is there Adam is at a real disadvantage. Probably the same thing holds for Don Cherry's chances (he and Harry don't get along).

Per WIKI, here is the present committee:
As of March 2009, the selection committee consists of: co-chairmen James M. Gregory and Pat Quinn as well as Scotty Bowman, David Branch, Colin Campbell, John Davidson, Eric Duhatschek, Jan-Ake Edvinsson, Mike Emrick, Michael Farber, Mike Gartner, Dick Irvin, Jr., Lanny McDonald, Yvon Pedneault, Serge Savard, Harry Sinden, Peter Stastny and Bill Torrey.

Re: RPI III: Revenge of the Seth

We are running through this thread pretty quickly-looks like we may need a new title for RPI IV shortly.

Re: RPI III: Revenge of the Seth

A month?! ALREADY?! Wow. I remember seeing (while observing but not posting) that 07-08 went pretty quickly, but this is just jaw-dropping. Wonder if we're trying ot give Tech a run for their money. :D

I think, since it seems to be a common theme for the team, that the subtitle should be "One game at a time".

Re: RPI III: Revenge of the Seth

Part of my reason for saying this was because no one has come out and written the story on the big stage to make the case for Oates to get in the Hall. I've done my part on this the last couple of years, but I'm just some jerk with a website.

I have made it clear, though, that if Oates doesn't get in in 2010, then we riot.

Re: RPI III: Revenge of the Seth

Do they not play the games in other leagues where you can look past teams?

I dunno if you can exactly call that a contrapositive of what I said, but do you think there are leagues where you can look past teams? I certainly don't, but then again I only really follow the ECAC.

QUOTE]

This may just be folklore, but did anyone else hear the rumors back in the day about Lindros and Brind'amour in Philly?

I havent posted in a bit, but had to come back to this - do you really think appropriate or necessary to address something that was not hockey related ? I know what you speak of and also think you have noted the wrong player. I never liked Lindros, but am growing to like you even less when you post garbage (like this).

Re: RPI III: Revenge of the Seth

In an attempt to get this thread back on the topic of RPI hockey...

Jerry D'Amigo's accomplishments in the World Junior Championships will be honored during Friday night's game. From the press release:
Additionally, there will be commemorative posters of RPI freshman Jerry D’Amigo – who recently helped the United States to the 2010 World Junior Championships gold medal – available. A special presentation to D’Amigo, a Binghamton, N.Y., native who finished second in the tournament in scoring with 12 points on six goals and six assists, will take place during the first intermission. A video highlighting his accomplishment will be shown.

I wonder what kind of setup they're planning on using for showing the video... not exactly like the HFH has a jumbotron scoreboard

Projection from the stage? Seeing as how the band is most likely not going to be there (source being one of the current band members), they'll probably set it up there.

Well, I have a little bit of news on that front, though I didn't think it was all going to take place for another two weeks!

The following is a release from the Office of Alumni Relations:

Friday, February 5 ▪ Houston Field House ▪ 4 p.m.

Interactive Discussion with the 1985 National Championship Players:
Captain Mike Sadeghpour ’85

Mike Dark ’86

Ken Hammond ’85

George Servinis ’86

Hosted by game announcer Al Shibley

Featuring video footage and discussion of the path leading to the championship.
The first 75 attendees receive a 25th Anniversary DVD of the 1985 Championship game.

Note that it too mentions the display of video footage!

I was contacted by the Office of Alumni Relations, and I'm pleased to announce that RPI TV will be covering this event and streaming it live via our website.

The email also mentioned the following:

This weekend also is going to provide a special opportunity. Working with the external media group, we are trying to secure a large screen to be placed above Section 1 in the field house. This screen would also be used during game time on both Friday and Saturday to show some highlights of the 1985 team. If all goes well, and if you are interested, we would love to be able to utilize that screen for some in game replays. This particular request we can talk about once we secure the vendor for the media.

Looks like the Field House is getting some type of screen, not sure if it's projected or more of a JumboTron. I have a hard time believing they'd put a permanent Jumbotron above Section 1, as Section 1 is soon to be removed in favor of a new VIP box and coaching offices.

I'm not sure how they're going to manage to mount a screen by Friday. Perhaps these two items are unrelated. I'm not sure exactly what is going to happen, but I'll let you know if I hear anything more.

Re: RPI III: Revenge of the Seth

Ken Schott mentioned the last minute of play Clarkson cheer/jeer (it's a pretty good one ;) ). Is it just that or is there some historical basis for it?
