RPI III: Revenge of the Seth

Re: RPI III: Revenge of the Seth

We don't know why he was a "healthy scratch," so the question is meaningless. If he violated team rules, that's one thing. If he was perceived to not be working hard, that's another.

RC-Coach Appert did make mention of why he was sitting Helfrich in his pre game interview but I was only half listening so can't comment. Perhaps someone else was listening and can amplify for us. (and it was SA who used the term healthy scratch)

Re: RPI III: Revenge of the Seth

I played hockey up to last season and once in a while the mites team would practice before us and they would not zamboni the ice and the practices were terrible with the ice tore up less that halfway through, the passes werent crisp and stopping wasnt fun.

I believe they resurface the ice before and during college games. For youth hockey...it's a matter of ice costs to pay for the 10 to 15 minutes of the zamboni. Usually after a mite practice...the ice isn't terribly bad unless there's been a long time since cleaning or the chillers are working well that day. Economics is usually the ruling factor here...supply and demand as well as too many chasing too few (premium ice time...if you practiced at 1AM I'll bet the ice will be fresh!)

And for the RPI/union game. What a game! The first period was the best of any game I've seen live this year and I was at the BC/Denver game on 1/2 which was a dandy as well. Great, great effort and it was a shame that RPI came out on the short end. BUT sometimes a good loss can be as good as a win...and if RPI maintains that effort the rest of the way, well, home ice will be assured and a first round bye quite possible.

Re: RPI III: Revenge of the Seth

On another note, does it really matter about Helfrich. Seth finally has this team where it needs to be i/t/o a consistent, competitive effort. As someone wrote previous, Seth has made it clear you earn your ice time on this team. Driving accountability can only continue to bring better things to this team.

Who else is planning to attend the Harvard game? It looks like me and a few other North Shore alums will be coming down and causing a ruckus...

LETS GO RED!

Re: RPI III: Revenge of the Seth

Unfortunately I will not; I plan to attend Freakout weekend, Colgate/Cornell weekend (away), and am still debating February 6th.

Re: RPI III: Revenge of the Seth

I watched Helfrich on tv last weekend vs Princeton and I thought he wasn't himself. He was slow and behind the play a bit. I have to believe he is nursing an injury of some sort. He has only one speed and that is to play all out. I would bet anything he's not 100%. There's no way that he doesn't play vs Union if he's uninjured. That's my take.

I didn't see the game last night, but it sounded like a dandy. We don't like to do it, but we have to give Leaman and U credit. They really are tough to play. Sounds like both teams played well.

I actually went to the SLU/Cornell game last night. Equally a great game to watch. Someone posted regarding RPI's 5x5 play needing to improve. Compared to what? I saw a very evenly matched 5x5 game last night at SLU. Different styles of play completely, but an evenly matched 5x5 game nonetheless. Why is RPI supposed to be dominant 5x5 vs everyone else?

First time watching a game at SLU and I enjoyed it quite a bit. Tight confines, but a cool place to watch a game.

Re: RPI III: Revenge of the Seth

My theory on Helfrich (which is based on zero actual knowledge) is that the ankle is nagging him as he's been a bit off since he's returned. It seemed like he was coming back fast (again, not knowing exactly what the injury was) and he hasn't looked 100% since coming back, aside from maybe his first game back. Remember, he blocked a shot off his leg in Detroit so perhaps something got aggravated there.

Re: RPI III: Revenge of the Seth

I know there had been questions in previous threads about why we were playing so many matinée games. Tonight's game notes (PDF) say that there will be a HS hockey game following the Harvard-RPI tilt next Saturday. So, that answers one question.

And, to answer the question of which HS teams are playing, this schedule shows the game as Shenendehowa vs. Christian Brothers Academy, at 7:30PM.

As for why Helfrich didn't play against Union, the only ones who truly know why are the team. "Healthy scratch" is such a vague term (just as "upper body injury" can be anything from a cracked rib to a bruised thumb). Could Rabbani have been in for Helfrich solely because Appert wanted the size on the ice? Unlikely, but possible. As has been noted, Helfrich wasn't looking his normal self in the games at Quinnipiac and Princeton the previous weekend. It's more likely (but again, purely speculation) that Helfrich wasn't performing at the level Appert was looking for in practice this past week for whatever reason, while Appert liked what he saw out of Rabbani.

With a game against a cross-town rival who's sitting at the top of the league, I'd want 18 skaters who showed in practice that they're ready to play at 100% in the coming game, rather than 17 skaters at 100% and 1 skater who's only at 90%. A player who's not quite firing on all cylinders may be healthy enough to not be considered injured, while at the same time not quite healthy enough to be the best pick to play in a difficult league game - thus a "healthy scratch."

Re: RPI III: Revenge of the Seth

Like how we never finished in last? Or something stats related?

In 2006-07, we finished in 9th. Also, I'm a little shocked that some of the game moments did not appear in this list. That would have been much better than saying since 2004, we have done awful record-wise.

Re: RPI III: Revenge of the Seth

I will preface the following by pointing all to the descriptor under my screen name to the left of this text.

http://www.troyrecord.com/articles/2010/01/18/sports/doc4b53f5767b5ba671633663.txt

It's because Appert is a hockey guy who knows his team was 3 bounces in 3 different games from sweeping these guys. Union's not invincible, just good.

If these two teams met 10 times, RPI would win 5. Which means they're now officially overdue.

I believe that you are correct. If not for a couple of late defensive mistakes, this series would be tied. It is a very even match-up.

On another front. This was probably mentioned here before, but if not. The Colgate game on 2/26 is to be televised on the NHL network.
I appologize if this has already been posted.

I think it was posted on another thread, so it's probably good to mention here as well. The ECAC championships will also be on NHL Network (all four games), but naturally we would have to get there first.

And if we get there, and you're watching it in NHL Network, you're wrong.

Re: RPI III: Revenge of the Seth

Question-I thought on the TW broadcast this weekend that one of the announcers referred to Union's smaller ice surface but when I checked it seems that both Union and RPI are listed as 200 x 85. What gives?

WRPI mentioned it also -- Kurt Stutt said that the ice seems smaller than most other rinks. I think he clarified that it might just be the small, cramped size of Messa making it seem smaller.

Wrong because the schedule has recently changed, or wrong because I would more than likely be traveling to Albany to attend the game in person?

Either way I don't have NHL Network, and the game would probably be shown on Time Warner around here.

Re: RPI III: Revenge of the Seth

So awhile back I posted that I didn't like they way the coach benched players and called them out in the paper (puppy pooh and the like). I feel abliged to mention that I appreciate the "Healthy Scratch" this weekend. If he has problems with a player it should be dealth with solely in the locker room; which it was this weekend. He has to say something if asked by the media and "healthy scratch" is the best option. I'm not against the benchings, just the name calling. Kudos to the coach on this one.

As for the reason for the scratch, I'd guess its performance oriented. However, the coach could be protecting Tyler. If there is an injury, you want to keep it under wraps. A few years back when Kevin Croxton had the ankle injury I noticed the other teams were wacking at it every chance they got.

Another kudo to the coach. I like hearing he thinks the team is better than Union. He should believe that, or at least say that in the paper; especially when the team plays well but loses. However, as Bill Parcells would say - you're as good as your record says you are and Union has made a very strong case over RPI. They made fewer mistakes and wanted it a bit more in the third. Big improvements but we still have a way to go. Too long a post but I think we are still too weak defensively and that's primarily what's keeping us from really turning the corner. One more solid blueliner and we get at least a tie in the Cornell game, we get at least 3 points from the 2 Union games, and we're sitting in the top 4.
