RPI III: Revenge of the Seth

Re: RPI III: Revenge of the Seth

I haven't read any of the write-ups, but here is what I saw last night.

This was as good a college hockey atmosphere as one will find. One criticism I would make is that there was no obvious effort - that I saw - to collect money for Haiti recovery efforts. The 50-50 $$$ went to one of the sports teams. For a school that likes to think of itself as socially progressive, this was inexcusable.

Union had more "jump" in the 3rd and played the way we did for most of the 1st and 2nd. Both teams did a good job of limiting quality opportunities. Our blue line play has improved immensely, credit to Coach Vines. They did a great job positionally and levelled several well-timed body blows. Let's remember U is a team that scored 9 goals last weekend. This game could easily have been a "W" for RPI. I do think the defense was playing tight in the 3rd which lead to bad clears...but much of that was due to Union applying a lot more pressure and our forwards needed to help out more.

At the risk of being labelled, aside from D'Amigo getting mugged while we were on the PK in the 1st, the penalty call on Pirri in the 3rd was ridiculous...an example of a weak call being made, one that impacted the outcome of the game. To add insult to injury, Murphy conveniently positioned himself so as to be in Pirri's way as he exited the box, busting up a breakaway chance for Brandon. Pirri even looked back at Murphy in disbelief as if to say " Did you REALLY just do that?...". Several of the U fans around me couldn't believe it. Murphy doesn't possess enough brainpower to think of this ahead of time, he's just an idiot with zero sense for where should positioned in that situation.

As for Helfrich, I don't know whether he is dinged up or not. I do know I saw him play in person at Q last Friday and he did not look like himself. So Appert decided to sit him - whether it was to give him recoup time or to send a message - I'm ok with it. Players earn their ice time in Seth's world. This isn't youth soccer where no one loses and everyone gets a trophy. :p

Re: RPI III: Revenge of the Seth

Any of the last three games against Union could have been a W with the right bounce of the puck. Don't worry about Union. We've got 12 games left and I believe we should be the favorites in all of them except for two - at Yale and at Cornell. Let's take the bull by the horns.

I don't remember the exact words, but SA, in the pregame interview on WRPI, indicated that Helfrich was a health scratch.

Re: RPI III: Revenge of the Seth

At the risk of being labeled an RPI suckup  , I am sold on your team. I can't see anything but good things ahead for them. I am really happy that they and Union are finally done, for now at least and I also hope that that neither team "bounces" next weekend. Let's plan on meeting next in Albany this March. ;)

Having met you during the Thanksgiving weekend, you won't get any such labeling from me. :D But I think all of us have our teams that we want to see lose every single game, and those teams in the ECAC we wouldn't mind seeing them win 20 out of 22. It's quite something to see your team make a turn-around (thus far) from worst to first in 3 years. I'm also glad the Route 7 games are done for the rest of the regular season. Best of luck in the rest of the season.

Re: RPI III: Revenge of the Seth

ECAC is tight Union better than expected, Yale and Cornell still need to prove that they are the cream.
Dartmouth... I bet we haven't heard the last from them. Bab Gaudet is too good a coach.
Harvard beats Yale mid week.

The engineers have a lot of tough hockey to come.

The rise in talent with the Dutchmen and RPI have made the ECAC the most competitive league in the country.

SLU ties Cornell last night beats Colgate 4 zip

And of course there's Clarkson hey they tied Ala Huntsville, Yeah right there is one minute left and Clarkson still ........

Re: RPI III: Revenge of the Seth

I heard they are going to build a temporary rink on the new football field next Jan and play Union outside

Re: RPI III: Revenge of the Seth

I don't know if Helfrich is healthy or not, but he was not himself last weekend and I was not surprised to see him sit. If it is an injury, I hope it is not serious.
Changing the subject,
I just made arrangements to be in Boston and attend the Harvard game on 2/12. Is there a section for visiting fans? Will there be a problem getting tickets? Is anyone else planning to attend that game? Any other information about the venue would be appreciated.
Thanks

Typically the away team fans are in sections 14-18. I go to Bright almost every year for RPI/Harvard, and have never had an issue getting tickets at the door. The Boston Chapter of the RPI alumni association is apparently doing an "informal pub night" after the game, though they haven't said where. (in the past it has usually been at John Harvards Brewhouse.) Usually RPI draws a lot of fans for the game. There are parking lots available around the hockey center, though I usually just take the red line in to Harvard square. I'd check ahead of time to see which lots of open for general parking.

Re: RPI III: Revenge of the Seth

Good game last night. As Wicked Slappaahs said, the atmosphere was unbelievable with the attendance reaching 116 over the legal capacity. I also want to echo Wholin1's sentiments: RPI has a VERY good hockey team and I could definitely see them getting a bye in round 1. Chase and D'Amigo are absolutely filthy. It was a ridiculously entertaining 4 games between RPI and Union this season and I hope to see an even more entertaining 5th game...in Albany.

LETS GO RED!!!!!!

Harvard's entire rink is the visitor's section - they have no fans.

No you didn't. You heard somebody speculating about it, and it would make zero sense.

Re: RPI III: Revenge of the Seth

We may not have scored 5v5, but that's not to say we didn't have our chances. I wouldn't put this on the shoulders of Helfrich, though. We needed the size out there, so Rabbani came out to play, and Tyler just happened to draw short stick. Should it have been Watts instead? Maybe, but we'll never know that situation unless you can transport yourself to an alternate dimension. We (the TEAM) just plain didn't want it in the 3rd, that's all.

But, that's behind us. It's time to buckle down on the rest of the season and focus. Let's think about playing 60 minutes of good hockey on Friday.

I do not put this on the shoulders of Helfrich at all. The only point I am trying to make is that he was a "healthy scratch". IMO he is one of the top 4 guys (forwards) on this team. Has the "healthy scratch" approach worked in the past? Build player and team confidence and you win more games. I am sure he will be back in the line-up (where he belongs) this weekend.

Re: RPI III: Revenge of the Seth

Has the "healthy scratch" approach worked in the past?

We don't know why he was a "healthy scratch," so the question is meaningless. If he violated team rules, that's one thing. If he was perceived to not be working hard, that's another.
