RPI Hockey 2012-2013 Part IV: Not A Finished Product Yet

Watching the game from the stands with my father and our friend (It was the first time since my uncle died 10 years ago that they have seen a game), the game wasn't as close as the score indicated. :p We were sitting in section 14, right beneath the band and had an excellent view of the game. RPI was flying on the ice, and had Clarkson on their heels all night long. The starting goalie for Clarkson let up so many rebounds that the RPI basketball team would hav had a field day. In fact, my dad made the comment that when RPI switches sides in the second, we won't get to see anyof the game because it will be down at the other end. Sure enough, he was right. I didn't see Zalewski's second goal because we were in line getting food, but the first one by him and Bubela were things of beauty. We were sitting in a row of Clarkson fans next to us and behind us and alot of them only wanted to do the chuck a puck contest. In fact, some of the students even joined in with the "One minute..." chant with the band :D Funny moment, there were a bunch of students dressed like Appert that wanted to get their picture taken with Dr. Jackson, and when they asked her and she agreed, they had forgotten to ask someone to take the pic. :D Typical RPI students. Teh Col. ended up taking the pic for them. RKarger, do you play the flute and were you talking with some Clarkson students in the middle of the third? If so, you were right in front of me. I remember saying that you have a sister that goes to Clarkson.

Nope, clarinet for me. I didn't know any of the Clarkson people here this weekend. :)

Jason Klump reported that Paul Stewart is going to be leaving the ECAC and that Kotyra will be his replacement. Make of that what you will.
Out of the frying pan, into the fire?

Re: RPI Hockey 2012-2013 Part IV: Not A Finished Product Yet

How will the tickets included in the season ticket package for ECAC Playoff games on March 8-10 be dealt with since we are not playing next weekend? I hope its just a case of switch the tickets at the box office or even just use these tickets we already have and we dont have to buy new tickets for the series.
Certainly RPI is capable of doing things in a more complicated manner than necessary, but I would think that they would just use those tickets a week later.

As far as Merriam is concerned, I have a feeling we're probably going to see him either start the game or finish it as long as the winner is not in doubt. Obviously, would be nice to get O'Grady back into the lineup too, but that's a physical thing.

It would be nice to see Marty as well but unfortunately I think his hockey career is over. At least from what I have heard here and there it doesn't sound like it is worth him taking the risk. I don't think I would even though I love the game and at some point you need to step back and think about the long life ahead.

Tonight at Union will be Kotyra's last game. It was mentioned on the Union radio broadcast last night.

Well at least he is going out with leaving a better taste in my mouth.;)
assuming he's not doing any post-season games of course. To be fair though, he has been pretty decent the last few games he's done concerning us.

Not in Princeton and certainly not at the Times Union Center.:( And I will never forgive the second playoff game in Ithaca a few years back which he did with Murphy.

But yes-he was actually invisible last night and for me that is a great job when I can say that about all 4 officials on the ice. :)

Re: RPI Hockey 2012-2013 Part IV: Not A Finished Product Yet

Just got home a short time ago-decided it was s olate there was no point in sleeping. There seems to be something new and exciting about evey game we play now. Last night it sounds like we won a game that in the past we would not. Taking penalites 8-2 and being down a 5 on 3 used to spell disaster. This tema is now so different. It shrugs this stuff off and goes about the business of doing whatever is necessary. And what is really great is that it comes from differnet guys each time. It is like we just keep coming-in wav3es. Every line forechecking, everyline creating, every defensive pair just shutting off the lanes. We are becoming something we have not been in a very long time-an incredibly difficult team to play against. Most NCAA level teams just do not have th edepth to have 4 equal lines and 3 sets of Defensemen. They now hqave to face a team that can beat you 18 different ways up front and can stop you 6 different ways in back. And goaltending? We have a freshman who is so calm, cool and collected that he is playing like a senior who controls the tempo and has incredible puck management. The talent was always there for the entire year-but somehow the lightswitch just clicked on. Jena nd i saw it in Princeton-the last 2 periods. We gave up nothing(2 shots?) and we were just pressing in the offensive zone for long stretches at a time. Whatever it is-SA has doen a masterful job with turning around a season and perhaps a program. Congrats to the boys on Senior night, congrats to the coaches for doing what was necessary, and congrats to the loyal fans who stood by for what seemed forever-waiting for this. I am almost sorry we got the bye week-I cannot wait for these guys to be back on the ice and hope that we have a whole lot of hockey left to play.

In my opinion, I believe that Ryan Miller was the best collge goalie during the time that I have been following the sport. So out of curiosity, I checked his stats against Kasdorf's in his freshman year.
This is what I found.

Miller-25 games played-16 wins-4 losses-3 ties-1.36 GAA. could not find Save%

Kasdorf-20 games played-13 wins-3 losses-2 ties- 1.50 GAA.-.940 save%

Pretty decent comparison. Of course Jason is not finished yet and there is no guarantee that he will continue, but it sure is nice to have that kind of goaltender going into the playoffs.

This has been a very satisfying 2013. It is easily the best run the Engineers have had since 93/94 when I first came on board. And since we are not a finished product yet, I see only good things in the future.
As Doc said in his last post, I almost hate to have a bye next week. I just love watching these guys play hockey.
Lets go red!!!!!!!!!!!!!

IMHO, SLU's powerplay was in dissarray without Flanagan. We would have been in trouble had he been there.
