RPI Hockey 2012-2013 Part IV: Not A Finished Product Yet

Re: RPI Hockey 2012-2013 Part IV: Not A Finished Product Yet

I mentioned on the scores thread yesterday-I can only think of one year in which we swept Clarkson in the regular season (2 games) and scored more than 11 goals in doing so (and that was a pretty good year for us). But i think tonight we have a chance to do something that no RPI team has ever done and no RPI coach has ever done. That is, sweep both Clarkson and St Laurence both on the North Country trip and at home in Troy in the same year. I only can remember back to the early 1960's. But i seem to recall even back then, that we had never done this even under coach Harkness (often we did not play them four times). Someone please correct me if i am wrong (and i know you will RB;)) since i never look these things up but try to go with memory only. This would truly be a momentous occassion.

Also I think I can safely say that for me there are a couple of other special things about what is happening right now. I have personally never seen a better offensive defenseman than Nick Bailen. From a pure offensive perspective-he has to be the best I have ever seen over an entire career at RPI. And although the year is not over and he has only played part of this season-I have never seen a better performance by a freshman goaltender ever(and I do go back as far as Bill Sack in goal albeit he was not a freshman).

Let's make this truly special and win tongiht guys-I won't be on the thread because some dumb fool picked tonight to get married:mad: I have tried every medical excuse I can come up with but Jenny is too sharp a nurse and i woul dhave to probably swallow my own tongue to get out of this one. Go get 'em RED and let's keep this rolling!!!!

Do you have an internet radio that you could stick into the pocket with a wire going up under your shirt? That's what I do at games sometimes.

That was one of the most fun games this year. I hate to say it kyotra reffed well

Re: RPI Hockey 2012-2013 Part IV: Not A Finished Product Yet

Although we still have a lot of work to do this year I'm really starting to get excited about what this group of young men are going to be like next year and especially the year after. We really are starting to look like the teams of the old days. You know back when kids, like myself, use to crowd the railings, where the team comes out, after games hoping one of the players would give you their stick. Or hope you would get called upon to answer a question by the equipment manager, I think, and have him give you a stick. Of course back then they probably only cost about $30 if that and not $200 like today. Love what we have been seeing and hope it continues for years to come. Do I hear contract extension for our great coach?

Re: RPI Hockey 2012-2013 Part IV: Not A Finished Product Yet

Looked at the last 12 games. Quinnipiac 8-2-2, RPI 10-2. Something for the pollsters to think about. Tough to leave this team out of the top 20 when they're playing the better hockey of the two.

I am choking as I say this but you are absolutley right. I cannot recal a game where Kotyra was involved and there were only 5 total penalties (no majors) and we had only 2 minors. He let them play and there was a lot of rough hits. Funny thing, I thought for sure he would have made a call a couple times as our big defensemen (and you know who they are) had been going into the boards elbows rather high. For the most part the game was clean but there were some big boys out there from both teams and they were not holding back. I hope that this is the new Kotyra and not just an aberrant incarnation.

Re: RPI Hockey 2012-2013 Part IV: Not A Finished Product Yet

I would not be surprised if we did see Bryce in net tonight. Coach does have a heart and has mentioned so many times over these past 2 months how they have not been worried about the standing or even paying attention to them. He also has always said he feels comfortable with any one of our 3 goalies in net. If he was to start Bryce tonight that would go to show a lot about him standing behind his words and how great of a coach he is.

Very true-but the polls will mean zero anyway. Everything is about PWR and we need tonight and we will need the playoffs. I had hoped for a Tournament bid when this season started. I thought there was no chance at midseason and was then just hoping for a first round ECAC home seed at best. Now, I am not only thinking about the possibility of an NCAA bid, but not being a 4th seed in any region(which makes a very big difference in any chance of moving on at all). Not getting ahead of myself at all-just taking it game by game which is why tonight is as crucial as any previous game. There is a natural tendency to let down after a great win like last night-but I am sure that coach Appert will have these guys ready for tonight and knows the significance of each step along the way.

I thought Luke was just a magnificent force out there last night. He just negated anyone in sight and they either went down or they got held into the boards and pinned there. Only one mistake, that centering pass when he went deep into the CCT end and sent the puck back out a bit and centered for a pass that Clarkson got and quickly moved up ice 3 on 1-but that happened 100 feet from our goal and we had time to get some people back and of course we have the Hadrian's Wall in goal right now. I thought the entire defense supported each other, covered for any lapse, moved to open ice to receive a pass to get out of our zone better than in any previous game this year.

After the game last night, the refs took a group photo with Puckman, and then one among themselves. WaP raised the possibility that perhaps Kotyra is retiring, and was looking to get a few last mementos. In any case, something was up - I've never seen that happen before.

Re: RPI Hockey 2012-2013 Part IV: Not A Finished Product Yet

How will the tickets included in the season ticket package for ECAC Playoff games on March 8-10 be dealt with since we are not playing next weekend? I hope its just a case of switch the tickets at the box office or even just use these tickets we already have and we dont have to buy new tickets for the series.
I asked Kevin Anderson that question last night and his answer was,.... good question, I don't know but I'll find out and get that info out there.

that was odd indeed. Never thought of the retiring aspect.

Not worrying about the standings would also be a reason to not start Bryce. After all, it doesn't matter if we're in 2nd or 12th, Coach puts onto the ice the players that he feels give us the best chance to win. If Merriam give us the best shot, he'll play. If Kazzy does, he'll play. If Diebold does, he'll play.

Jason Klump reported that Paul Stewart is going to be leaving the ECAC and that Kotyra will be his replacement. Make of that what you will.

As far as Merriam is concerned, I have a feeling we're probably going to see him either start the game or finish it as long as the winner is not in doubt. Obviously, would be nice to get O'Grady back into the lineup too, but that's a physical thing.

Against any team we could potentially see in the tournament, though, that's a GA. Don't get me wrong, I like the BRO's confidence to pinch when in most cases he'd drop back and prepare for the transition. Now it's time to practice good decision making and taking care of the puck when you are deep in the zone if you're giong to be doing that.
