Re: RPI Hockey 2012-2013 Part IV: Not A Finished Product Yet

Absolutely-i like 19th much better than 21st. While i do not think we are in any way deserving of a top 15 ranking-I also do not feel we should be left out of the top 20. Moot point, and perhaps only important to me. But i feel our boys should be rewarded for what they are achieving-even if it is just 2 numbers up the scale. While we are at it-explain to me why some teams listed who are so far down the list (10th place) in the ECAC even get one vote.? I can guarantee you that if we were tied for tenth place in the ECAC we wouldn't get even a cursory glance.
But since the voting is for 1 - 15, someone thought we are in the Top 15.

Re: RPI Hockey 2012-2013 Part IV: Not A Finished Product Yet

SLUt PP is led by Greg Carey 23-22-45.....leads nation in points ....shoe-in Hobey finalist...3 goals vs. Q & P this weekend.

Is that a one-man team, though? Similar to what people could have said about us when Polacek was in his senior year? At risk of endearing us to certain Cornell fans that have chosen to give our score threads two extra tags (I'm pretty sure it's Cornell given when they started), but their meltdown started at our game when Bardreau went into the boards awkwardly. All you have to do is stop Carey, and SLU's toast. I'm not recommending putting him into the boards, but that's not a good bottleneck to have.

They have this other guy, Kyle Flanagan. Nothing special, just a Hobey Baker candidate, one that has the support of our great coach.

Is that the Cornell which is leading D-I in penalty minutes per game? :)

That line gave us fits all night. They log a lot of ice time and in games with lots of whistles, penalty calls, and TV time outs-I would espect to see them for 25 minutes on the ice. I haven't seen a lot of lines from the other leagues but they have to be in the top few for sure. Top prority for us in the last regular season game will be to neutralize them as much as possible. SA is right about Flanagan.

I took my son down to Uniondale to see the Flyers beat up on the Islanders. Will be posting a short College Hockey Slap Schotts blog, and will include my ballot.

Wow that was a whooping Kenny. Didn't see the game but sounds like the Bullies fixed there PP. BTW- I'm still want to debate Paul Stewart on Rodg's show about the state of ECAC officiating.

Wait a minute-isn't that the title we usually contend for? What ever happened to RPI hatchet hockey of the old days?;)

Fair enough. Here's a follow-up, though: Are they this good on their own, or does the concept of complements have an effect on their numbers that have led to this accolade? I see that they commonly play on the same line. Compare to one of our past players, Tyler Helfrich. Freshman year on the 10-15-21 line, terrific. Senior year when reunited with 21, terrific. The other two years, though...

Re: RPI Hockey 2012-2013 Part IV: Not A Finished Product Yet

Appert credited Coach Graham for righting the PP ship and moving Bailen down low on the PP...which I also mentioned here earlier this year...just saying' :p:D

It's not the first time it's happened. I seem to remember them (Monty at the time) swapping Polacek and Brutlag, and that helped to spark an absolutely putrid power play and get it going. As much as Coach Graham is the creative force behind the PP, it would not surprise me if Appert planted that idea, especially after what he saw merely four years ago.

Re: RPI Hockey 2012-2013 Part IV: Not A Finished Product Yet

... as they once said in Slap Shot: "aggressive hockey is back in town".

Say, let's put aside talk of Carey & Flanagan for awhile... :o
Let's be attentive to the details... it's Cornell & Colgate this weekend. We haven't had much success on the CNY trip in , say, the last 10 years, have we? :( Cornell's tailspin worsened after their visit to Troy; Bardeau had a seson ending injury on HFH ice. Believe that Schafer will have them up for us! (THeir elbows up, that is...) And playing at Starr hasn't been much fun in recent years, either.
Be attentive to details... skate our game. Listen to our Great Coach. :) Just win, baby.

Re: RPI Hockey 2012-2013 Part IV: Not A Finished Product Yet

This was probably the most enjoyable weekend at the fieldhouse that RPI has had in almost a decade. Obviously the wins make it nice but more importantly the team seems to be playing with a purpose and the underclassmen have a chemistry that I have not seen out of this team in a long while. In the down times, Appert has been questioned on here by several people and IMO, rightfully so. He is the one that ultimately chose this group of players and he is the one that has desired this style of hockey so give credit where credit is due. Lets hope this ride continues the rest of this season and for the next several with this group.

On another note. I know the fieldhouse funds have dried up for the time being but what the **** with the net at the east end!!! Is it me or has it been for many years that the net has been coming off with little contact. Can we pass the hat the next home game so they can properly redrill and fill the holes so the supports don't give everytime someone brushes up against the net. Almost cost us a goal against Yale.

Lastly, was it anyone that posts on here wearing the red #4 RPI jersey at the Rangers/Caps game Sunday night? At first I thought it might have been an Oates jersey with him coaching the Caps but saw the number 4 from across the ice when they stood up. Couldn't recognize the name on the back.

Re: RPI Hockey 2012-2013 Part IV: Not A Finished Product Yet

More dampening by Schottzie. He votes us #2 in the ECAC power rankings yet puts 3 other teams ahead of us in his top 20. I just don't agree with that logic. Dartmouth is 3 games over 500 in overall record just like us and we just beat them. Yale is one game further above 500 but we've beaten them twice. BU and Merrimack are questionable picks to be ahead of us. BU is in freefall and Mack has played a weaker schedule.

If the situation were reversed and we were a HE team, the local writers would never put 2 ECAC teams ahead of us. It's no wonder we aren't in the top 20 when we can't even get a break from a writer right up the road. I'll bet the guy in Hamilton that keeps picking Gate at 20 didn't even list us. Geez....

Yes and the fact that we have some ooc wins like Ferris State, St. Cloud, etc. that I don't think other ECAC teams have. Especially the U, that beats up on the Atlantic all the time. Heard they may put HVCC and Siena on their schedule next year. JM this 2x that you and I have agreed in 2013. I'm quitting while we're ahead.
