RPI Hockey 2012-2013 Part II: You Better Starting Posting the Engineer Way

Re: RPI Hockey 2012-2013 Part II: You Better Starting Posting the Engineer Way

It made perfect sense. RPI didn't have the money to make it a decent tournament and it had been declining for years. The move to Thanksgiving was an effort to save it, but it didn't work. the fileds had become pretty weak, and it was not a first-class operation the last decade or so due mainly, I believe, to a small budeget. Becasue of the lack of money and the addition of so many other holiday tournament across the country in the past 20 years, they couldn't consistently get good teams, so the attendance also dwindled.
Has there really been an increase in other Holiday tourneys? I never counted, but it has seems to me that there has been in general decline in in-season tourneys.

With rare exception, all things must eventually come to an end, whether it's the Roman empire, Ken Jennings' win streak on Jeopardy, or the RPI holiday tournament.
Yes, and the world will end in under a month also. :D

Probably the only tournament that hasn't seen decline is the Frozen Four.

The only part of the hockey budget that Dr. Jackson controls is the coach's and AD's salaries. Remember that RPI Athletics are still controlled by the Union.
I don't recall a detailed discussion here ever on the effect of the Union control of athletics on the hockey team. At least as far back as when I was a student, and I think a lot longer, I have heard that RPI was one of few schools where the Union, and thus the students, controlled club and athletic funding through the activity fee. This was always stated as a plus, and I was never involved to any extent besides for my parents paying my fee, so I cannot speak about this with any real knowledge. :) IIRC the Institute does have some oversight control of what the Union does, especially as it pertains to athletics. There also are things that have seemed mystic to me, as the fact that the HFH is in some way independent of RPI to the extent that the hockey teams have to pay for ice rental. (Correct?)

Anyway, it wouldn't surprise me that when all the smoke and mirrors are removed, the Institute still controls things. If the Union really had control, wouldn't the PU have a private box and not Dr. Jackson? :D

I recall hearing that the Houston Field House is considered an auxiliary service.

I'll help you convert it to cash. ;)

The Field House was recently moved back under the umbrella of the Athletics department, and I believe that the hockey team no longer "rents" the facility for practice, among other ramifications.

Given the recent changes that have occurred, I can't say that I'm surprised. I wonder if this means that there will no longer be a yearly concert at the venue... granted, the days of the pep band being able to say they played on a stage where Alanis Morrissette once played are over, but the concerts were a nice change of pace.

It's been years since there was a concert at the HFH. And they weren't exactly an annual occurrence when they did happen, either.

There haven't been any concerts there since I've been here. I think there is some form of concert at ECAV/EMPAC every year (or so).

The RPI music department did have the Troy Music Hall concert while I was there (and once I graduated it moved to EMPAC), and I believe there is a concert series that uses the two venues previously mentioned. I guess the concert/alternative sport use of HFH was replaced by the TUC for the area, and given upkeep and the like, it probably behooved the owners of HFH to sell to RPI.
