No idea what you're talking about, we're paying 10 times the "former level".

I was referring to soon after the 1973 embargo. Many things are on the order of or more than ten times more expensive than in the early 1970s, e.g. RPI tuition.

Cheap Plug for my cousins band Linear North http://linearnorthmusic.com/ who will be playing a show on the RPI campus next saturday night December 1st at Ground Zero http://gzbasement.net/index.php located in the basement of Nugent Hall. Doors are at 8 music should go on around 8:30 or 9 admission is $3. So after watching the hockey game head over to see some live music.

Anyone know what the hec those awful sweaters Cornell was wearing last night during the 2nd period? Missed the 1st period so I do not know what they were wearing but noticed in the 3rd period they changed into their regular white sweaters. Looked like they were to support the troops but if so why did they take them off in the 3rd. I cannot find, though have not looked too hard, a thread talking about it on here.

Re: RPI Hockey 2012-2013 Part II: You Better Starting Posting the Engineer Way

They wore the sweaters during the 2nd period and are going to auction them off with all proceeds going to the Wounded Warriors foundation. They floated the idea around for a while and figured the MSG game would be the best place to do it. I also believe that one of the Cornell players has a parent in active duty.

Thanks, I figured it had something to do with our troops. Although a good cause I did not like the looks of them even though I was only seeing them during commercials of the ND/USC game. Wonder why Michigan did not participate in it as well. In the college basketball games both teams usually wear the jerseys but I do not know if they auction them off or give them away afterwards.

Not sure if it had to do with the fact that the MSG game is now considered a Cornell home game as mentioned many times last night during the broadcast. Like a black friday type of thing I guess.

Re: RPI Hockey 2012-2013 Part II: You Better Starting Posting the Engineer Way

was just wondering......has anyone ever seen a PK with 4 D-men? I can see it perhaps tiring out the D for the next few shifts but what about 2-3 minutes left in the period?
This makes no sense to me. It takes PK players maybe 60 seconds to get exhausted (and usually more like 30-40). So you throw 4 D out there and after 30-60 seconds do what? Out go 2 forwards and 2 D. And now you are relying on your weakest D pair to PK - unless you used them as forwards on the 1st shift. I don't think I'd ever want to replace my top two PK forwards with my two weakest D. There's a reason that they put fast forwards on the PK. Two big and usually slower D men would be a field day for the offense.

Now... all of that said, I could see putting Bailen out as one forward on that 1st shift since he is fast enough and seems to like to take chances. Smart risk taking for a PK forward is not a bad thing.

Good points.

Very logical analysis. Probably why it is not done often if at all.

Agreed, especially about about the 2 weakest D-men being out there. I've never really paid attention to it but I will take notice to see what 2 D-men are not out there on the PK, or rarely.

We miss the tounament very much. Could care less if it was held in November, December or whenever. Was always exciting and a wonderful way to see 4 games. (or 6 like in the old days)

Yes on all counts. It seems strange not being able to go to HFH to see the holiday tournament. I know the reasoning for eliminating it but I don't agree

The December 1972 CPI-U was 42.5. The June 2012 CPI-U was 229.48. 5.4 times higher. Since this is an average, some things will be up more, some less.

It made perfect sense. RPI didn't have the money to make it a decent tournament and it had been declining for years. The move to Thanksgiving was an effort to save it, but it didn't work. the fileds had become pretty weak, and it was not a first-class operation the last decade or so due mainly, I believe, to a small budeget. Becasue of the lack of money and the addition of so many other holiday tournament across the country in the past 20 years, they couldn't consistently get good teams, so the attendance also dwindled.

It was pretty anemic, attendance wise, the last few years of the Tourney. Attendance for the games not involving RPI were sometimes less than what the women draw. It was fun though seeing teams like LSSU & Notre Dame. It's time had come like the Gov.'s Cup. Ala Doc, just my 2cents.

Yeah that sums it up. But you reap what you sow. Having teams that finish low in their conference, and frankly not very good, limits the teams that want to fly in. What is the upside for a Western power to come in here and chance losing to Army or Holy Cross? It makes no sense for them.
If RPI was a power in the East, more quality teams would be inclined to show up to the oldest holiday hockey tournament in the country. More people would fill the stands if better teams showed up.

The inability, of RPI coaches, to put quality teams on the ice is one thing. The lack of support from Dr. Jackson and her administration is another. The amount of money the hockey program is bleeding is miniscule compared to RPI's budget.

The only part of the hockey budget that Dr. Jackson controls is the coach's and AD's salaries. Remember that RPI Athletics are still controlled by the Union.

We are able to get a better schedule overall without the tourney, I think that SA regards that as more important than the history of the tourney. Even if we become a consistent NCAA tourney team, we are not going to get the top western teams to come to Troy to play two games, one at least against a mediocre team. (There never have been four top teams in the tourney.) I also suspect that not playing on Thanksgiving weekend, whether on purpose or not, will increase the average attendance. So as much as I miss the tourney, i don't expect it to return, at least in the foreseeable future.

With rare exception, all things must eventually come to an end, whether it's the Roman empire, Ken Jennings' win streak on Jeopardy, or the RPI holiday tournament.
