RPI Engineers 2018-2019

Re: RPI Engineers 2018-2019

By accident, I found our second goalie recruit, Ena Nystrom of the Ontario Hockey Academy in Cornwall. Each year, there is a girls hockey tourney at the Capitals' practice rink in Ballston (Arlington), VA. I have only gone once, in 2014. I thought that only one RPI recruit was going to be there, Julia Blitz, but when paging through the media guide https://cdn1.sportngin.com/attachme...54.202918736.1547588594-1396339904.1494914762, I noticed that Nystrom was also listed.

Elite prospects page https://www.eliteprospects.com/player/368099/ena-nystrom
more proof she is going to RPI https://www.instagram.com/enanystrom/?hl=en
She is not listed in Neutral Zone.

She has played on Norway's National teams including the team which tried to qualify for the last Olympics. She was the second youngest player on the Norway team in the qualifying tourney and was the goalie in 2 of the 3 games which Norway played. https://w-groupc.pyeongchang2018.iihf.hockey/en/teams/#NOR. (change https to http) FWIW, Josefine Hansen and Lilli Friis-Hansen played for Denmark in that tourney. That was the game in which Nystrom did not play.

Edit: It may be necessary to go to https://www.jwhl.org/cc to access the Media Guide.

The Ontario Hockey Academy broadcasts on YouTube and archives them at https://www.youtube.com/channel/UC59dnnlcVW1rq7gIx3S_Pgg/videos?sort=dd&view=0&shelf_id=1. Ena Nystrom plays for the Girls Tardiff team and is #29. One has to figure out if that is she in the net which is not easy because one doesn't see the number on her back except when she wanders behind the net. She is 5'10" which helps.

Edit: OHA played two games against Mississauga (PWHL). I watched about a period of one https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=GwzE3Q2FFa8 and a few minutes of the other. I picked those games because two of our 2020 recruits play for Mississauga, 3 Taylor Larsen and 2 Asiah Taylor-Walters. Nystrom was in goal and Larsen definitely played. I don't think that Taylor-Walters played. For several reasons it was very difficult to identify the Mississauga players, a combination of their dark uniforms, my colorblindness, video resolution, ponytails, and most of all the netting through which the camera filmed.

Re: RPI Engineers 2018-2019

Anyone know what's up with RPITV? They were scheduled to carry today's game but I don't see a link on their website. However, audio is carried on WRPI for those interested.

Also, just found the video on youtube :).

OT power play goal from North Country native Blake Orosz.

30 saves for Selander. She now needs 257 in 12 games which requires an average of fewer than 22.

21 saves in a 4-1 victory over Union. She now needs 236 in 11 games.

Re: RPI Engineers 2018-2019

Ena Nystrom didn't exactly have a busy day yesterday, saving all 7 shots she faced. https://www.jwhl.org/game/show/23948605?subseason=573446&referrer=4663868 They have two games scheduled today.

The Washington Pride played two games yesterday https://www.jwhl.org/game/show/23948599?subseason=573446&referrer=4663640 and https://www.jwhl.org/game/show/23948608?subseason=573446&referrer=4663640. Julia Blitz had a goal and an assist in the 2nd game. They play one game today.

I may go tomorrow, but probably not.

I may go tomorrow, but probably not.

On Saturday, OHA played two games. Nystrom played in the second and made 12 saves in a shutout. https://www.jwhl.org/game/show/23948617?subseason=573446&referrer=4663868 and https://www.jwhl.org/game/show/23948624?subseason=573446&referrer=4663868 OHA has three straight shutouts and gave up only 23 shots in the three games.

Julie Blitz had no points in her game yesterday. https://www.jwhl.org/game/show/23948618?subseason=573446&referrer=4663640 It turns out that they are playing each other in a quarter final as I type this. OHA is filming the game https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qHLTYxfPfPY&feature=youtu.be as they did earlier.

I debated on going but I thought that OHA was rotating goalies and didn't want to drive to a 7 AM start as Metro doesn't open until 9 AM on Sunday. I was correct. It's 5-0 OHA after one period. They are bigger, faster, etc. I wonder how this sort of thing will help Nystrom at RPI where she will see a lot more shots.

Edit: Blitz is #14 in white.
Box score https://www.jwhl.org/game/show/23952736?subseason=573446. Final score 6-0. The SOGs look closer than the game actually was. OHA seemed to turn it off after 1 period probably because the semi is this afternoon.

Edit2: After getting 4 straight shutouts, OHA lost to Belle Tire 3-0 in the semis. Nystrom saved 28 of 30. (The last must have been an ENG.) https://www.jwhl.org/game/show/23958778?subseason=573446&referrer=4663627

Re: RPI Engineers 2018-2019

I'm still annoyed that Saturday was postponed, but at least we did what we needed to do on Friday. We're still in really good position and effectively control our own destiny up as high as fifth place. This weekend represents another situation where anything but winning would damage our chances, but if we manage to pull all six points between now and next Tuesday evening, we will effectively lock up a playoff spot, and we can start to truly dream about a world the team hasn't seen since my freshman year at RPI. Exciting times for the women in cherry.

NYSTROM COMMITS TO NCAA RPI
The Ontario Hockey Academy are pleased to announce that goaltender Ena Nystrom has committed to play NCAA Division I hockey at Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute starting in the fall of 2019.
“We have extremely strong goaltending and Ena work ethic and compete level is very high” said head coach Paddy Flynn, himself a former netminder. “RPI got themselves not only a great goalie but also a great person, she will be a leader at RPI.” Congratulations Ena.

Edit: One of the congrats is from former men's player Alexander Valentin.

Quite impressed with how the quality of RPI's game has improved since the first few games of the season. Yes, they still rely heavily on Selander, but not enough credit is being given to their overall disciplined defensive play, and the offensive ability of their top line. At the halfway point in conference play they are now 6-5, exceeding my expectations and others'. The two USCHO womens hockey bloggers, Candace and Nicole, had them at 2-9 and 3-8 at this point, based on their "Weekend Picks". I doubt that they will be able to maintain that pace in the second half of the schedule, but here's hoping they prove everyone wrong again.

After underestimating the Engineers all year Candace and Nicole are both predicting that RPI will pick up a road sweep this weekend:eek:. I felt better when they were predicting them to lose almost every game :D.
