As Ralph previously mentioned, there is the Hilton Garden Inn on Hoosick Street, right down the block from campus. Downtown, the Best Western that lugnut was talking about is now a dorm for the students, but I believe he was talking about the hotel that was formerly a Super 8, located right across from Dinosaur BBQ. It was taken over by local hotelier and restaurateur Michael Cocca, who is the operator of the Franklin Plaza, etc. In fact, the hotel is called the Franklin Square Suites. Only have been inside there once, but it's nice. As far as eateries, it depends n what you are looking for. If you stay at the Hilton, there is a sports bar right attached. There is also the aforementioned Dinosaur BBQ, and there is a Bombers Burrito Bar and a bunch of restaurants/bars on the King Street/River Street corridor. Brown's Brew Pub is a great place. Troy is a city with beautiful architecture and history. As Ralph said, you have Uncle Sam's gravesite in Oakwood Cemetery, the RPI Campus, and just a short drive north in Lansingburgh you have Herman Melville's home where he wrote his first two novels, a monument to all of the baseball Hall of Famers that are from Troy (also, where the San Francisco Giants started out. They were known as the Troy Haymakers and were one of two teams in the original National League, along with a team from Worcester. After two years, they moved to NY and became the Giants, because of the tall Troy players.) The Baseball Hall of Fame leaves this history out when talking about the SF Giants. If you can catch a game, go see the Tri-City Valleycats, class A affiliate of the Houston Astros. They are home September 1 against the Brooklyn Cyclones (Class A-NY Mets) You'll enjoy the trip to Troy, and I think you'll be pleasantly surprised. WElcome and have fun.
