RPI 2024 Off-Season: Was 2023 – 2024 Just a Bad Dream?

Today is 12 April 2024. There are 176 days until RPI's next game.

This is based upon 5 October 2024 for the start of next season.

Has anyone calculated how many forwards and how many defensemen are expected to come back from last year's team? I was trying to figure out how many of our recruits should be entering in the fall assuming we don't get anyone else from the portal.

I believe the roster is currently as follows:

Goalies - 1 Returning (R), 1 incoming Freshman (Fr.), 1 added through Portal (P) (roster is complete)

Defense - 5 R, 2 Fr., 2 P (roster is complete)

Forwards - 8/9 R, 4Fr., 1 added through P with another 3/4 needed.

There could be a change or two based on how commits vs. portal additions shake out, but this is my best guess at this point.

Nice summary. With the portal open until some time in May - could be some changes of course. Would like to see 1 more defense added in some form. As of today we have 7 of our boys entered into the portal and we have picked up 4. Would think that leaves room for 8-12 maximum that can be added as freshmen or other portal additions. You show 7 freshmen coming in your summary which would leave room yet for 1-5 more additions.

Apparently none of our players who entered the portal have committed elsewhere yet. That says something about them.

It was reported here that Payant was leaving. He is not yet on the list.

At this point I would assume that either the report that Payant is leaving was in error or he's headed to a Canadian university so he doesn't need the portal. I suppose a third possibility is a low-level minor league (such as the SPHL or FPHL) but I sincerely hope not for his sake.

Good point about a Canadian university. It would be great if it was an error.

No, that's not what you said. You said because they didn't announce that they'd cut him off at the knees they must have decided to let him work out the remainder of his contract (3 years IIRC). That is not nuance, it's just a completely ridiculous conclusion. Publicly under cutting your own coach is just a formula to create further damage and serves no useful purpose.

Dave has undercut himself. Please stop thinking that anything said on this thread makes a hill of difference. Our reputation on the recruiting trail is awful because of what has transpired here under the current regime.

For those interested, the men's lacrosse game between #2 RPI and #7 Union will be on RPI-TV today, I was told. I'm probably going to go check it out. Game time 1 PM.

Edit: My thoughts after RPI's 16-12 victory.

1) Lacrosse is an exciting sport, but the rules are very odd.
2.) RPI's faceoff guy needs to don a pair of pads and skates. He was excellent.
3.) RPI's goalie needs to don a pair of pads and skates. He was excellent.
4.) Even though the goalie was excellent, Lacrosse goalies don't stand a chance in a one on one with the shooter. They have no padding and can't use their bodies to save the ball unless the stick comes with them.
5.) There were guys flying on and off the field at any given moment. Not a line change, just random guys. THe defenders don't play offense and the offense doesn't play defense. It was very confusing.
6.) Guys have long sticks and short sticks. I have not found out the difference yet.
7.) RPI plays very very well defensively. Union very rarely was able to get a good shot off, which helps the goalie because he has no shot at a save if they do.
8.) RPI player Luke Murphy I was told is the leading candidate for the DIII Tewaaraton Award (Hobey of Lacrosse), and it shows. Union could not stop him.
9.) We might have to try to find some broadcasters willing to take a trip to wherever the DIII Lacrosse championship is played (Baltimore? Pittsburgh?) in case RPI makes it there.

Overall, I'm glad I went as it was my first outdoor lacrosse game ever, but man was it cold and windy at ECAV. Also, college students are an odd bunch, both men and women.

Agree with 1-9 totally. Your last statement has been my thought for the past 60+ years! Started with my first day at RPI and only gotten more obvious each year since! BTW could only check the score every so often today. We were at MSG watching an incredible Islanders-Rangers game. Although I despise 3 on 3 OT and hate shootouts even more, the Rangers won so our trip home will be a rather joyous one!!!
