RPI 2024–25: Come for the Hockey, Stay for the Football

I just noticed that DrD and I among many others have passed their 25th anniversary on this forum.

Jenny and i were looking for something to celebrate and after what you have pointed out - we have it! Tonight instead of our usual vodka (Van Gogh Dutch caramel flavored) i think we shall open an expensive bottle of wine as we hope to watch the RPI girl's season opening contest. I think this calls for a Chateau Mouton Rothschild (either an incredibly expensive '59 or the Picasso labeled '73). But we will hold off opening the bottle until we know the final score for the game and celebrate instead with a Louis XIII Cognac if we do not prevail tonight. ;)

Odds for the upcoming weekend - Football we are a 9.5 point favorite over Rochester even though they are coming into the game undefeated!
Men's hockey we are a 2.5 goal underdog against UMass (I never understand how they arrive at odds for an exhibition game in which you cannot even be sure who will play and for how long)
Girl's hockey we are a 3.5 goal favorite over Sacred Heart for Friday. I cannot recall the last time we were that big a favorite.

BTW I have not found a video broadcast on the web for the girl's 2PM Friday game. Pretty sure Rochester football does broadcast their games but could conceivably be a pay site

Our first game is 5 days from now. Although listed as an exhibition I would have thought we would see some posting about the game and some predictions about our chances. I suspect we will see lots of extra guys suited up and perhaps we can skate more than 4 lines, play 4 sets of defense and see a different goalie for each period. This one does not count for anything and is a good chance to see what we might have and what combinations work better together.
I guess we will not have a streaming video for this one.

Thanks for bumping the conversation Doc.... I am tempted to take a run over to the gamexhibition on Sunday. But if the weather stays as nice as its been, I'll be hard pressed to not be in the High Peaks!

Notes about the Sunday match -- it is starting at 3:00PM (the RPI printed schedule from the ticket appl. has it at 4PM).
Also, ZooMass will have played the night before at Bentley.

I am thinking about buying the hockey streaming package for this season. (Just thinking.) Can someone post the details or tell me where to look?

If you are talking about the ESPN+ stream -they raised their prices (again) for this year. You purchase a monthly subscription or an entire year for a slight discount. I believe the year cost is $109 but not totally sure. Since the only thing I would purchase this for is RPI hockey, and now I find several of the games are NOT included (anything on Flosports which some schools have deals with), i am holding the line. Jen and I pick and choose the games we want to see, head out to our local pub which has had the subscription, and have watched about 50% of the games (for free) while enjoying a meal and a few drinks.
The broadcast itself is not bad but you have to remember it is not like the old RPI TV productions. This past weekend for example, the broadcast came on 1 minute late - and we missed the opening goal scored against our girls at the 18 second mark. Last year there were several times where the broadcast did not start on time but I do not recall if we missed any scoring or not. It might help for you to look ahead on our scheduled games and see exactly how many games are definitely being broadcast. Just my opinion of course.

The High Peaks is an area that is one of the best kept secrets. Very few from down here at the Jersey Shore have any idea about the area and thank God for that!! Over the years Jenny and I tried to climb the top 40 peaks most over 4000 feet. We fell a couple short but added a few that were a bit less in height. At our ages now, we console ourselves simply by being able to climb up onto a bar stool for a potent potable. :)

Ralph - here's the link to the ESPN+ FAQ for details. Easy to sign up for an account, provide your CC (or PayPal info) and link to a SmartTV or other streaming device. I've been doing the month-by-month payment plan for a few years now, starting the service just before the 1st televised game, and stopping at the end of the season. So paying for about 5 months / ~$50-60 total, to see a majority of the RPI games, easily flip to catch other ECAC games and the occasional ESPN special has been worth the price to me.

And if WRPI is broadcasting the game, I'll mute the televised audio and sync WRPI with the video!

Consider this a PSA of sorts.

Do not recall a whole lot of fanfare or PR about it when Disney and Spectrum Cable (who services parts of 41 states with cable) settled their contract dispute a couple of years ago. However, to make a long story short, cable customers placed the blame for the dispute and the lost programming during the dispute squarely on the shoulders of Disney (who owns both ABC and the ESPN family of channels). As a result, there was both public pressure on Disney to settle the dispute and pressure from elected officials from the areas affected. Under these circumstances, it was pretty easy for Spectrum to turn the "negotiations" in to little more than taking Disney out behind a woodshed, stomp on Disney with a hobnailed boot, breaking their nose and crushing their face!!!

As a result of the settlement at gunpoint, all Spectrum customers meeting minimum requirements (a Spectrum TV Select Plus subscription for $99.99 a month) would now receive the Disney family of channels, Paramount and ESPN+ at no additional cost. However, since at least some of these free addons are internet bases (ESPN+ being one of them), you almost certainly would also have to subscribe to Spectrum internet at another $94.99 a month. Sounds like a lot but many Spectrum customers were doing just that even before the addons.

Before signing up for any expensive additional subscription, Spectrum customers should check if the already have the addons only don't know it due to the almost nonexistent publicity from any of the parties involved.
