RPI 2023 Off-season: We March Fourth Into the Off-season

"If they go .500 in those first 8 games, I’d consider it a win."

If they go .500 in the first 8 games I'm buying Lake Placid tickets. Maine and BC should be much improved. PC is always tough under Leaman. The North Country trip has long been a nightmare trip for any team. These days Union is the easiest opponent of the bunch yet those rivalry games are always tough regardless of which team appears to have the upper hand. Adding in the fact that 7 of the 8 games are on the road means the team will have to be much improved, particularly after last season's 2-13-0 road struggles, to come close to .500.

Definitely agree. Probably could have worded that part better. I'd probably expect 2-3 wins in those first 8 games. What I meant was, if they go .500 in those games, that would be an excellent start considering the difficulty.

I will not make any predictions for this team until I see a roster.
While I agree that playing competitive teams should get us ready for the ECAC, it also could kill any confidence we may have going into the season.
I really think that the first 8 games should have been a mix of those top teams and the kind of teams we played last year.
That said, I look forward to the start of the season as always.

I personally think the Sezenack's report is quite useful and probably took a lot of work. I applaud it. We are pretty sure what the roster will be. Yes, conceivably Babich will show up as an extra forward (unlikely but possible) or Muzzatti will be drafted in the top two rounds and turn pro immediately (most unlikely). Sadly, more likely is that after the roster is released someone will get a season-ending preseason injury.

Don't get me wrong. I also think that Sezenack's report was useful and I am sure that a lot of work went into it. I enjoy all of his posts.
I was just talking about predictions. I don't think that the returning players are up to the challenge of the first eight games. And I don't know a lot about the incoming players.(I don't follow them as closely as others) So I will wait until the official roster comes out. What I do know, is that what ever happens, I will still be rooting for the engineers.
Lets go red!!!!!!!!

Sutter Muzzatti picked round 5 and 143 overall by the Nashville Predators!

Hope he likes Country Music! Great news for him and for the program. Quality organization. My only peeve was that NHL TV had some ridiculous interview on the screen when his pick came up and when they ended that went straight to commercial so we did not get to hear any comments about him or RPI.

He was in front of the media at one point. I'll look for some videos after work and post what I find.

Selfishly I think that pick is just about perfect. The fifth round is high for a guy on the second time around so it shows how much he's developed due to his hard work and the efforts of the coaching staff. On the other hand, there is usually not a lot of pressure for fifth round picks to leave early. I'd expect we will have Sutter for at least a couple of additional seasons and look forward to seeing him emerge as one of the best forwards in the league.

maybe no pressure from Nashville to leave early, but he’s probably most certainly on the radar of a Big Ten or Nacho team to be “persuaded to transfer”

Unfortunately that seems almost inevitable (not necessarily with Sutter but with the player pool in general) and when it does become apparent that's happening it will also be the day I lose all interest in college sports. I cheer for RPI and Cornell because I went to those schools and UConn because I'm a 30 year resident of this state that started by taking my daughters to see UConn Women's Basketball when it first started to emerge as a statewide (and eventually nationwide) phenomenon in the mid-90s. I can relate to the teams and players over the normal four year college lifecycle. That's why I really have no issue with guys like Ture Linden and Ryan Mahshie that finish their degree and want a different experience. I got my degree and went to a different school for my graduate years. However, if I wanted to see minor league sports where player contracts can be purchased and they often move season to season I have AHL hockey and G League basketball 10 miles away and USL soccer and AA baseball within a reasonable distance. I go see those teams once in a while but I don't have any passion for them. I wouldn't have much passion for a college environment that is just another minor league arrangement either. The abysmal failure that was NCAA leadership under Mark Emmert has probably killed the golden goose..........

True for me also. I go far back as a sports enthusiast and recall the days in baseball, football and basketball when teams could put the same line up out there for years in a row. You could recite the line ups from memory and remain devoted as a fan to a team and the players. Today obviously it is a different scenario and I find myself not being able to keep up with the rapid changes in rosters. It has made me far less of a team fan and perhaps also less of a fan of the individuals. College hockey had never been a part of this and although the rosters always had turnover from graduation, there was a consistency and overlap of years. Now the flood gates are open and as some have predicted, this may result in a two tier system of haves and have nots who will lose their recruits to other schools. This may not change the feelings for many fans of college hockey but it most certainly will (and already has) for me. At my age and stage of life, I am rather set in my ways and only begrudgingly want to make adjustments or changes in what clearly works. I love hockey in general and college hockey in particular (and of course RPI hockey the most). I hate many of the changes I have seen and am seeing now and surely will object to those coming in the future.
