RPI 2022 Off-season: Surely, We Deserve Better

Did you see the footnote where they said Plan B is a six month subscription to ESPN+?

Seriously, I'm confident that we will be able to return to the Field House this year. With new leadership that managed to survive the pandemic in a larger metropolitan area, I don't think we'll go out on a limb again compared to our peers.

Our loose coalition of enthusiasts remain of like minds that we will not spend/give another dime to RPI until such time that fans are allowed back. So sadly, we'll not be attending the golf outing or anything else until I see a season application land in my mailbox.

I am sorry that you feel that way about the golf outing. I was able to attend one some years ago and it was a great way to meet the players and get some real inside information about the coming season.
I just think that if you miss that opportunity, you will only be hurting yourself.

I attended every year it was held and always enjoyed it. If and when the school decides to value its alumni, fans and supporters then the checkbook will open back up.
Until that time, not another dime.

Today is 23 July 2022. There are 70 days (10 weeks) until RPI's next game.

This is based upon 1 October 2022 for the start of next season.

It was my understanding that all the money raised at this event went to the hockey program.
Life is too short to give up a great day on the golf course with great people because you don't like the previous administration.

To the NCAA I believe an intra-squad scrimmage is no different than a practice. They can be open to the public, such as the traditional "spring game" intra-squad scrimmage commonly held by D-I football schools or the First Night festivities common to basketball. I was referring to inter-squad scrimmages such as with Colgate. As you noted they don't have to be played in a traditional game format, but, in basketball at least, they must be held behind closed doors.

Sorry for introducing a basketball-themed post into our hockey thread, but now that you mention it, I can remember that during my student days, RPI played a basketball scrimmage against Siena, which at the time was Division III, so we could be competitive with them. The scrimmage was closed-door, but I was the statistician for the RPI basketball team, so I was allowed to attend and do my thing.

The atmosphere was quite a bit different from a regular-season game, in that the coaches could tell the players what they really thought. I can remember one play where a Siena player was called for a foul. He shouted "No!" looked aggrieved, and turned to his bench, expecting some expression of support for his complaint.

In a regular-season game, of course, the coach would have yelled at the ref, not really expecting to get the call changed, but in hopes that it might incline the ref to call a close one the other way next time.

In the scrimmage game, the Siena coach yelled at his player, "You fouled the hell out of him! Now play ball!" :)

I spoke with Ralph Isernia this morning and asked him whether or not fans were going to be allowed back in this season. He told me that he was informed that fans will be allowed back in. Looking good for football (and hopefully hockey).

FWIW - A quick check shows Union, Clarkson and Colgate all currently selling season hockey tickets. So there does not appear to be any league hurdles to do so....

Finn Brown is today's video. https://t.co/npX8PLBVCF

"Roller Coaster" is the wrong answer for an RPI player to give to the last question. :-D

This is all part of the education of an RPI student.

George Washington Gale Ferris, an RPI grad, was credited with the invention of the modern Ferris Wheel. There were other, more primative wheels out there but Ferris improved on the design and the mechanics of operating the wheel.

Ferris Wheels have been incorporated into the design of a number of RPI class rings over the years.

Apart from that, something musical...

On WRPI, the best piece of music to introduce the hockey broadcast, in my opinion, is "Keep Hope Alive" by the Crystal Method. Give a listen, you'll remember the tune. Put the phrase 'The Crystal Method - Le Boulet' into your browser. Enjoy!

And the video features a memorable scene of a Ferris Wheel, complete with some really cheesy Hollywood Physics.

That certainly is a memorable scene of a Ferris wheel, though the music isn't really my style.

As I recall, when I was a student, I asked my roommate, who worked at WRPI, what song was used to introduce RPI hockey broadcasts. He didn't know the title - all he knew was that it came off an album titled "Great College Football Fight Songs."

Years later, I figured out that it was actually the L. A. Rams' fight song. Why it was included in a collection of college fight songs, I will never know.
