RPI 2022 Off-season: Surely, We Deserve Better

Y'all's gettin' a Budy (pronounced: booty) call.

My eval: Small, quick, decent skills, but easily agitated and will take dumb retaliatory penalties (at bad times).

We've been talking about him. He has a chance to get serious minutes with us, including specialty units. Last year we had one of the best penalty kills in the country. I'm sure Coach Smith will make it clear that his minutes can only go down if he makes us use it.

Today is 21 July 2022. There are 72 days until RPI's next game.

This is based upon 1 October 2022 for the start of next season.

The new guy has only had the keys to the kingdom for less than three weeks. He is no doubt addressing a mountain of issues in advance of the fast approaching fall semester, not the least of which will be the school's COVID policies. I take the scheduling of the golf tourney as a positive development and expect there will fannies in HFH seats this fall........fingers crossed.

On a separate note, a colleague of mine had an opportunity recently to interact with the new Prez' wife and found her to be extremely pleasant and down to earth.

Though I have never met the friend myself, a friend of a relative of mine had a similar opportunity to interact with the spouse with said results being relayed to me by my relative. Pretty much the same general review though the most operative term relayed to me was "classy".

Unless your colleague and my relative's friend are one in the same person, there seems to be a positive trend here.

I have absolutely zero recollection (correct me if needed) dating back over two decades of terms like extremely pleasant, down to earth or classy ever being used by anyone to describe the former and only other female occupant of the mansion. Again, trending in the right direction.

After 2 years of not going, I suspect I won't go this year. I certainly don't want to buy plane tickets without knowing what is going on.

just saw that on he’ll be on a “presidential tour” meeting with alumni. First stop, September 7 in DC. You can ask him.

One of the gifts for sponsors at the golf outing is 4 season tickets to mens hockey. I would say we’re good

Did you see the footnote where they said Plan B is a six month subscription to ESPN+?

Seriously, I'm confident that we will be able to return to the Field House this year. With new leadership that managed to survive the pandemic in a larger metropolitan area, I don't think we'll go out on a limb again compared to our peers.

I know the schedule's been out for more than a month. I don't remember whether it read this way when it first came out, but I see now that it indicates RPI will play Colgate in a "scrimmage" on Oct. 1 and then the University of Toronto in an "exhibition" on Oct. 2.

Anyone know what the difference is between a scrimmage and an exhibition?

If D-I basketball is a model, then scrimmages are held behind closed doors while exhibitions are open to spectators. UConn has increasingly used scrimmages in recent years, Harvard has been one of the opponents, because the quality of the competition and the informal nature permitting occasional coaching breaks have made them better preparation for the regular season. However, I've never seen a scrimmage show up on the published season schedule. In fact, the programs don't even announce the score (although it generally leaks out).

In the past, RPI used to have a Red-White scrimmage game (followed by a skate with the Engineers) which was open to the public. I attended those games on many occasions. There are several differences between a scrimmage and a exhibition. Some of which are shorter periods, like a 15-minute period or a 1-minute penalty or even a running clock, which I have seen before. In fact, when RPI ran these scrimmages they only had 3 goalies and one of them used to change jerseys between periods and play for the other team. I’m sure that the RPI and Colgate coaches will come up with a game plan for the scrimmage. Should be interesting to watch (if we’re allowed in)…

To the NCAA I believe an intra-squad scrimmage is no different than a practice. They can be open to the public, such as the traditional "spring game" intra-squad scrimmage commonly held by D-I football schools or the First Night festivities common to basketball. I was referring to inter-squad scrimmages such as with Colgate. As you noted they don't have to be played in a traditional game format, but, in basketball at least, they must be held behind closed doors.
