RPI 2015-16 Preseason Thread: To Dream the Impossible Dream

Re: RPI 2015-16 Preseason Thread: To Dream the Impossible Dream

Excuse my ignorance, but what does "partial qualifier" mean?

It means he didn't have the grades/standardized test scores to "fully qualify", but they weren't so bad that he can't even get a scholarship. Since he "partially qualified," he can practice with the team and receive his scholarship.

Here are the guidelines.

As to what turk said, the link I posted seems to indicate that he will only have three years of eligibility.

Yes, according to the link you posted, it seems pretty cut and dried that he will only have three years of eligibility.

I wonder why the coaching staff or anybody else at the school should need time to figure it out.

Perhaps because they were partial qualifiers too. :)

There could be something involved that doesn't fit into the rules. What is written in the rules seems so cut and dried that it should have been known all along.

In honor of Parker Reno and Heidi Niskanen, today is 1 October 2015. There are 2 days until RPI's next game.

This is based upon 3 October 2015 for the start of next season.

Perhaps there's some sort of consideration if he were to take his SAT/ACT again if he would then be eligible as if he "came in in January", if only for a partial year. After all, he's allowed to practice with the team. Not saying it's possible, mind you.

You are assuming that the problem is with his SAT/ACT, not his grades and coursework. Any problem with his test scores would have to be known. We have heard about recruits having to take those tests over before. It would not surprise me if the problem had to do with HS curricula in Canada being somewhat different than in the US, and something fell by the wayside in the process.

The above was all speculation on my part.

Good questions - where was the confusion with his eligibility in the first place, and now moving forward?

It probably stems around the calculation of Wiffen's "Core GPA". Either that, or Wiffen was meant to be an integral part of the "system"...

Re: RPI 2015-16 Preseason Thread: To Dream the Impossible Dream

This really sucks. How much risk is there of losing Wiffen to major junior now? Not playing for an entire season isn't the most palatable thing to a talented player like Wiffen...

He's 21, which I'm pretty sure prevents him from going to the CHL.

Ralph....you are on the right track. The other thing to consider is that what the NCAA considers a core course, might be different than what the Canadian High School considered a core course. Since there was an appeals process, it might have had to do with a particular course not being considered a core course. You would then appeal and provide the NCAA with a sylabus of that particular course, and then the NCAA determining if it fits their requirements. Just speculation as to another possibility, but as Wicked stated, somebody definitely dropped the ball. I'm more shocked that a partial qualifier made it through RPI admissions!
