RPI 2015-16 Preseason Thread: To Dream the Impossible Dream

Re: RPI 2015-16 Preseason Thread: To Dream the Impossible Dream

Jennings indeed was whom I was thinking of. Time does fly. He was in the NFL from 1974 to 1987, the last three with the Jets. Gary Croteau overlapped with him in the NHL, perhaps others also. http://www.hockeydb.com/ihdb/stats/pdisplay.php?pid=1170

This may be a stretch, but I believe Dave Jennings also played D3 basketball for SLU... I'm thinking he played against some of Bill Kalbaugh's teams w Tom Juknis, Dan Veitch, Carey Dassati, the McElroy twins (Harry & Larry), (Bill?) Susetska ... anyone else remember players from the early/mid 70's?

Re: RPI 2015-16 Preseason Thread: To Dream the Impossible Dream

If Jennings started kicking in the NFL in 1974, then presumably he graduated from SLU in that year. That would make him a freshman in 1970-71 and I think freshmen were still ineligible to play varsity sports at that time, so he wouldn't have played for the SLU varsity basketball team before 1971-72.

Guys who were sophomores on RPI's 1969-70 team, the last year I was in school, included Tom Neufer, Gary Dubnansky, Steve (Coyote) Laskey, Alan Klein, and John Cangilla. All of those would have been seniors in 1971-72 and could have played against Jennings that year.

Members of RPI's 1969-70 freshman team could also have played against Jennings. It's a little harder to remember names from that team, though Dan Walsh comes to mind.

Doc & Ralph, do you recall any RPI roundball?

I proudly state that I never attended an RPI basketball game. :D

A matter of fact, I have never attended a game at any level, HS, college, pro, etc.

I did have some basketball players in classes which I taught when I was a Math TA.

Surely you jest? The only basketball games I ever attended were NY Knick games at the old MSG. I only went to those because my parents dragged me on days that we were in NYC for a Rangers game later. I watched some on TV as a kid but once i discovered all you needed do was tune in for the last 2 minutes (which took an hour with all the time outs and fouls) I don't think I saw a full game ever again.

Re: RPI 2015-16 Preseason Thread: To Dream the Impossible Dream

Craig Bokenfohr led the golf team over the weekend, not that the team seems to have done all that great. http://www.rpiathletics.com/news/2015/9/6/MGOLF_0906155237.aspx?path=golf

Maybe this should go on the alumni thread since he is a alum of the hockey team, but he is still an undergrad.
....he also garnered Liberty League GoW....http://www.rpiathletics.com/news/2015/9/9/MGOLF_0909152949.aspx

RPI will be apparently be requiring the graduating class of 2021 and upward to participate in this program. It requires you to stay on campus between sophomore and junior year, as well as be off-campus one semester of junior year. It does not explain if any exceptions are allowed. This could theoretically only allow junior year hockey players to be on the team one semester. The repercussions of that could be numerous.

I believe that is a misconception. May have thought that because it has the word 'Arch" in the title, which is used as an abbreviation for architecture all the time.

This link lists the for the pilot program specifically lists the school of engineering for the pilot program in 2017, and says all members of the class of 2021 will participate in 2019, the official launch.

Echoing what rsfs04 says, no.

In 2017, Rensselaer will launch the first of two pilots of the Summer Arch, and rising juniors (members of the Class of 2019) from the School of Engineering and from select programs in other schools will have the opportunity to stay on campus and participate in the Summer Arch.

In 2018, Rensselaer will launch the second pilot, and rising juniors (members of the Class of 2020) enrolled in all schools will have the opportunity to participate in the Summer Arch. The ultimate launch will take place in 2019 and will include all members of the Class of 2021.

Should be interesting to see how they plan on handling financial aid and athletes in this program. Currently, RPI's policy is that RPI scholarships can't be used for summer sessions:

In addition, Rensselaer awards are not available during summer session(s), Federal and state aid programs may be utilized during the summer session(s) which may reduce annual/aggregate eligibility.

Re: RPI 2015-16 Preseason Thread: To Dream the Impossible Dream

I hope that this isn't as mandatory as it sounds.

If I were in high school and RPI told me that, if I came there, I would be forced to attend a summer semester after my sophomore year and prohibited from attending either the fall or spring semester in my junior year, I think I would scratch RPI off my list of colleges to which I would be interested in applying. :(

Re: RPI 2015-16 Preseason Thread: To Dream the Impossible Dream

Doesn't Northeastern have a mandatory coop program which would have a similar effect?

I do think that it would cause a lot of problems for our hockey teams and other winter sports.

Doesn't Dartmouth have a similar program (sophomore summer)? How do they handle requirements for athletes?

Re: Northeastern, Co-op is not required (at least not in my younger daughter's program) but the overwhelming majority take at least one co-op assignment. I'd guess that most athletes, particularly those in winter sports, do not participate.

It seems to me that by using the words "opportunity to participate" makes it voluntary. JMO

From the article: "This will allow students to take advantage of the numerous co-curricular and experiential activities available off campus, including ..., internships, co-ops, research opportunities, and engagement in community service projects." I can easily see "research opportunities" and "engagement in community service projects" as a way to allow the juniors to keep playing hockey even if technically "off campus" but overall I agree, it will take some creative planning to allow that to happen. A business management major gets an internship with a prominent auto dealer in the area to study how they manage their day-to-day operations (surely just a coincidence that said auto dealer advertises at HFH!)
