RPI 2013 Part V: Who Wants Screech?

Re: RPI 2013 Part V: Who Wants Screech?

You are right about that play in the pros. I watch a lot of pro games and it is wide spread thoughout the NHL.
I believe that you don't see it as much in college, is because the players don't have the same control of the puck in college. I have seen it tried many times in college and it almost always is played to hard leading to an icing.
Just need to practice it a lot more to control the lob into the neutral zone without over doing it.

Pro's are Pro's because they don't panic with the puck.

Re: RPI 2013 Part V: Who Wants Screech?

One thing I've noticed is our passing as greatly improved. In our defensive zone, each d man seems to know where his partner is, which allows them break out more efficiently. Sometimes they reverse ice which loses the opposing forchecker, which allows for crisp breakouts. They go thru the neutral zone with speed as well. Some of the many improvements over the past couple months, and it has been fun to watch. Great job by the players ans coaches, can't wait for next weekend.
Total agreement. The D-zone play has improved dramatically...great coaching and great execution by our boys.

Re: RPI 2013 Part V: Who Wants Screech?

Good to see we're still frequent posters! Sorry I haven't been around as of late.

All I DO have to say though is, remember, this team isn't on the rise...

Re: RPI 2013 Part V: Who Wants Screech?

I thought Rogic used to play centre?

No, but he has played center before.

There you go, problem solved.

The NY Rangers play this to almost perfection with Carl Hagelin. BTW, in case some season ticket holders are still wondering, I received a letter today (I'm sure you will also) that the 3 xtra tix for the playoffs will be good for the Qtr-Finals.....3rd game if not necessary will be refunded.

I love Carl Hagelin, would not mind at all if one or two of our players started emulating him. FWIW, Travis Fulton reminds me of how TJ Oshie plays.

Re: RPI 2013 Part V: Who Wants Screech?

Do people really think that Schroeder, Rogic, and Fulton could be a line without someone with some brawn on the line? Even St. Louis and Perrin had Ruid.

Although I do now remember this, until "Gardiner's dad" was brought into the conversation, I had forgotten about it. Pete graduated in 2000, and am pretty sure his father (Frank I think) did this early in his carrier which started in 1996-97. I am not sure when it was mentioned last, but has been quite a while.

As the years have passed, so has my long term memory. My best recollection is that Frank Gardiner received this bottle of Screetch (a spiced rum-like concoction from Newfoundland) from the mother of Doug Shepherd for a post game celebration since she herself was unable to make it to Troy (or Lake Placid in those years). Frank and a few of us RPI faithful would go to Manory's for breakfast on Saturday morning to meet Frank and crew which usually consisted of wife Jenn, Reid Shepherd, Doug's dad, the Hanson sisters, half awake players who promised to meet the kids, and an assortment of RPI faithful. So it was logical for Frank to leave the bottle at Manory's since there was not an occaision to open it before Pete and Doug graduated. It was crated along with a bottle of Red donated by Tony Buffa with the orders to be opened only when RPI wins the ECAC although it was unclear if that meant the regular season or tournament. Either one would work quite nicely!

So the goal is to win the tournament this year and OPEN the SCREETCH! And make sure that EVERYONE has a taste from the bottle(s)!

Lastly, let's ALL make it to Pittsburgh! I've been lucky to be at two of the last three Frozen Fours and trust me...there ain't nuthin like it! The team is playing the best hockey I've seen this year including any team in Hockey East. The only team better that I've seen live is Minnesota but that's a story that needs to be told later. For now, let's enjoy a weekend off and take on NO MATTER who comes next!

Enjoy the run and stay thirsty my friends....Larry (Still crazy in section 17)

I am pretty sure that all of that discussion was on the RPI-Sports list, not here. I take it that the bottles are still at Manory's.

The crate used to sit on top of the lottery scratchoff machine they had there, I think it's on top of a cooler now. Anyway, it's still there, and on the crate it specifically refers to the tournament, although it explicitly says Lake Placid on the side. So we might have to wait until next year, maybe.

Yes, there's a crate marked "Do Not Open Until RPI Wins the ECAC" or something like that. I have a picture somewhere, I'll try to dig it up and post it.

Oh, I suppose not, but the speed would be fun to see once or twice. For our games at Minnesota State Rogic centered Schroeder and Lee. Fulton does seem to play like he thinks he's a foot taller than he is, which is great. Interestingly, Schroeder has also played center for a handful of games this season.

Thanks Larry 17. Now it all makes sense. Hopefully the bottle can be popped. It should taste great after 15+ years.

And yes, I will definitely be in Pittsburgh after missing last year's FF in Tampa. Looking forward to visiting Primanti Brothers...:)
And there is nothing like watching the four best college hockey teams in the country battle it out live..!

I'll echo it again, that Fulton kid works REALLY hard. I have this icky feeling that he may end up suffering the same short end of the stick that Scott Halpern suffered, but I really really REALLY hope I am wrong because he provides SO MUCH energy out there.

That Vermont line tormented us for years in the 90's. And Ruid was the muscle on that line as you mention. A little early for this-actually a lot early-but next year aline of Rogic, Schroeder, and Melanson would leave vapor trails.:)

Our last Frozen Four attended was in Albany 2001 when BC beat NDak in OT. Absolutely deafening for all the games. You have it right-there is nothing like being there live for the best in college hockey.

And they wouldn't need brawn, because they won't stay in one place long enough to get hit :D

Too bad Schroeder's name doesn't start with P, or it could be the RPM line. :)

I suppose it would be worth a try next year, but I would have my doubts about it working. But more importantly, the four centers we have now will all be around next year, and I see no reason to change them if they're healthy.
