RPI 2013 Part V: Who Wants Screech?

Re: RPI 2013 Part V: Who Wants Screech?

Uh oh, Cornell wins... Brown swept, and with SLU looking to sweep, I'd say we're big Dartmouth fans at this point.

Interestng situation in HEA. BU faces Merrislack in the first round of the tournament. If BU wins, they can push Mr over the TUC cliff and lose a huge 3-0 record against them. Tough luck for BU, a no-win situation.

Color me indifferent. I don't see much of a difference between Brown and Cornell at this point. We can sweep either one if we play as we've been playing. At least the most important thing happened.. we get to play a TUC in the next round and that TUC will not fall off the cliff even if we sweep them. Perfect. A sweep next week and we will be in great shape.

It's just the Cornell mystique that scares me the most, but you are correct.

Re: RPI 2013 Part V: Who Wants Screech?

Northern Michigan was also swept, so that isn't an issue any longer. Now, aside from winning (seeing as how we are playing TUCs; it's not like last year when we were facing a non-TUC with the opportunity to play a dangerous TUC we had yet to beat afterwards), I think we need TUCs to win their other respective tournaments.

Re: RPI 2013 Part V: Who Wants Screech?

Agreed on both accounts. Coming in, Cornell was the only bottom 8 team I really didn't want to see at HFH next weekend.

I know the feeling for most is that it doesn't matter who we play-if we play like we have we can beat anyone. But Ralph has it right-I too would prefer Brown to Cornell. Both have been a problem for us in the past few years but the only really poor game we played in the last string was at Cornell. As was said in Master and Commander "One should always choose the lesser of two weevils";)

Much rather play Brown. They have NOT been a problem for us the past few years. I believe we have not lost in 6 straight since the playoff series loss.

John-I was only referring to the playoffs. They are most certainly the lesser of the two evils. I was just not happy with how we looked in Ithaca a few weeks ago-and neither was SA. We are still an injured team with no real reserve-I just imagine Cornell would be the more physical problem for us right now. BTW-I think we are capable of beating either team in our rink as long as the games are mostly even strength games. We were 1-1 against Cornell this year and 1-0-1 against Brown so that is also of some consideration. But we just looked more in control against Brown and seem to match up better.

Agreed. To me that playoff series against Brown is ancient history that includes mostly players that are gone from both rosters. Looking closer, RPI has outscored Brown 20-5 and are 5-0-1 the past 3 seasons. Bottom line, play their game and they can beat either but IMO Cornell is a little more dangerous.

Re: RPI 2013 Part V: Who Wants Screech?

To me, the question of who we want to play is influenced by what our goal is. If we want to win the ECAC's and we think that Cornell is the bigger possible stumbling block, then wouldn't it make sense to play them in a 2 out of 3 instead of a single winner take all where anything can happen? That to me would seem like an argument to play them in the quarterfinals. If instead, our goal is to make it to the NCAA's, then a sweep in the quarters is the best path for that, and then Brown would be preferred (I am basing this on other's opinions - I am indifferent myself).

Therefore I guess it all depends on your view in life... if you are a glass half full person, either outcome gives us something to be happy about (better chance at the NCAA or a fairer competition (2 of 3) against a potentially tougher opponent).

If our goal was an ECAC championship, we'd have a bunch of clutching and grabbing players in order to play by-the-norm ECAC hockey. Coach's ultimate goal very obviously is not an ECAC championship. It's a NCAA championship. I believe it is wise for all of us to share that goal.

Interesting thoughts. Makes one really think. I just want to take this one step at a time. I figure that we had no losses agianst Brown this regualr season and not many in the past 3 seasons. Cornell, however, was a bit more difficult for us. I just want to get through the next round with as little problem as possible. Brown is a good tough team and could end up being a major problem. But i still feel our chances of winning a 2 game series is better with them than the boys from Ithaca. Meanwhile-anything can happen in the other 3 series-who knows? All the teams are capable of just about anything. A healthy SLU can do a lot of damage. I am honestly not sure who else will emerge to be in AC. I just know i want us there. If we are the #2 seed there-great. If by some chance we are the #1 seed-even better. In a one game, winner take all, anythihng can happen there. One break and you win or lose when the teams are all this close. I just want to see our season extended as long as possible. I am not ready to fall asleep in front of the TV watching baseball just yet.

Update-it looks like Brown for us as DC is up 3-1 over Harvard after a kind of shaky start.
