RPI 2013/14 Part III: Maximum Overdrivel

Re: RPI 2013/14 Part III: Maximum Overdrivel

Congratulations on your win, you bastids. :p

Sounded like there was a decent RPI presence at Lynah. Always like to see a substantial traveling section. Good luck the rest of the year.

The band did travel, I believe there were 53 present at the alumni gathering, but I'm convinced it's because the usher at Section O didn't gloat pre-game. :D Cornell wins when he does, and loses/ties when he doesn't.

Although we still have an outside shot at the bye, you guys getting top 4 would help in some tiebreakers, so good luck. :)

Only part of the band since they were also at the women's game.

Re: RPI 2013/14 Part III: Maximum Overdrivel

Next to North Country, I always thought that coming out of the Hamilton/Ithaca weekend with any points at all was an accomplishment -- particularly this season where both of those teams seem excellent quality. Go Red and let's finish the regular season at home this weekend nice and strong.

That being said, I am considering a trip to Yale for that game. If I decide to go, any advice/recommendations on New Haven?

The Whale is a fun rink. Allow plenty of time for parking; it's street parking only and not easy to find an available space. Also, the RPI Alumni Hartford chapter is having a get together at Anna Liffey's Pub (2 or 3 blocks from the rink) for food and drinks starting at 4:30 and Coach Appert is supposed to be there for a little bit to meet and greet. It doesn't look like I'm going to make it down there this year but it should be fun. (I've always had a good time in years past.)

Re: RPI 2013/14 Part III: Maximum Overdrivel

I was going to ask this on the Union thread but I decided that "discretion is the better part of valor" and am posting it here instead. There has been talk there (you can guess by whom to a large degree) about RPI's average PIM/game and where that puts us in the ECAC and NCAA. Does anyone have a way of accessing a data base and also calculating the standard deviation for each team? I have the gut feeling that we have a rather large SD thus making the mean relatively meaningless. (No pun intended.)

They added a parking garage behind the rink in the past few years, so finding parking at Yale isn't as bad as it used to be.

Just threw it into a spreadsheet, our variance is 421.7122222222, making our standard deviation about 20.536.

Here's the source data, chronological order except the last row are means.

Just threw it into a spreadsheet, our variance is 421.7122222222, making our standard deviation about 20.536.
So that means that zero is less than one SD from the mean. It certainly makes the mean quite insignificant.

In a less nerdy fashion, I see most home games we get around 3-4 minor penalties, usually. I consider that relatively normal for this league. Any way we can calculate the SD for other teams like Union to see if their low average really has meaning as well?

Hmmm. I get a S.D. of 20.562

Perhaps our difference is related to the ways that the bonus calculations can be applied?:D

Did one of you use the biased estimate of the variance (with 1/N) and the other the unbiased (with 1/(N-1) )?

Re: RPI 2013/14 Part III: Maximum Overdrivel

Just for informational purposes the distribution of penalties thus far is:

2 minute - 139 for 278
5 minute - 11 for 55
10 minute - 17 for 170

Total - 167 for 503

All majors were 'earned' in just 6 games.

I used the STDEV.P function in Excel. I would guess the difference is probably due to truncation of significant digits?

My method is using the biased variance. I calculate the unbiased S.D. as 20.913.

Anyone got a histogram?

Re: RPI 2013/14 Part III: Maximum Overdrivel

Anyone got a histogram?

I think a box and whisker would be more appropriate. For something like PIMs, reporting the median (for RPI, 10) would be far more honest and informative than reporting the mean.

Anyone know if the Team is wearing special sweaters for Friday's game or maybe the pre-game warmups...... Seth Appert ‏@SethAppert 2h
excited to partner w @DefTheBlueLine n Wounded Warriors for Military Appreciation Friday where we will raffle special military RPI jerseys

Median is 5 for 10 RPI and 4 for 8 for the opponents. In other words, we commit one more penalty per game, which sounds about right to me. It must be that one bone headed one that we always seem to get at a bad time.

I disagree with box and whiskers telling the story better than a histogram - especially in this case where 2 games (both against Union) throw the entire thing off by so much. You get a very long whisker which I think looks better as two bars way off from the rest of the population. But hey, it's a matter of taste I guess and I never was a big fan of box and whiskers.

I made a nice little chart and would post it but I don't have a place to put it so I can link to it from here.
