Re: RPI 2013/14 Part II: The HFH is Covered with Frozen Drivel
usually I'm more than a little skeptical about concepts like "harmonic convergence" but the frustrations on the ice and the snarling infighting here on this thread ..... might they somehow be connected in some cosmic snarl?
One of the hardest things to fight is a contagion in confidence. If anyone here has ever been part of a rowing team, you know that if one person starts to lean to one side, you need someone mature enough and self-controlled enough to lean the opposite way. That can be quite challenging sometimes. otherwise, when one person starts to lean to one side, if a few more also lean to that side, pretty soon you are all under water.
On some teams, there is a senior or precocious underclassman who has that quality where he can inspire by example. you can't wait for it to emerge by magic, you evoke it with an exceptional effort.
I remember once, in a team sport in which cooperation with teammates was absolutely essential, we were stuck with a total a
ss. moan, complain, nothing ever his fault, everyone else always to blame. his attitude and manner on the court were dragging everyone down, and we were struggling.
Finally, we were so totally angry with him, we all decided first, not to speak at him or look at him at all, and also to execute the fundamentals so very, very well that it would be impossible to find anything to criticize. We turned things around from that point forward, and he remained ostracized until the first chance came along for us to dump him. the emotional work was challenging, harder than the physical, yet ultimately gratifying.
