Those of us who have followed this program for a long time( and a few of us who have followed for a very long time) want to express our gratitude that Luke and his parents decided to join this program also. We look forward to some great years-and Jenny and I cannot wait to meet up with you. Now let's go out and even up this weekend series and start the ball rolling!!
Doc: I confess you're the only member of the board I'm scared to meet...I FEAR that we'll have so much fun partying that I'll run away from home and form a commune with you and Jenny (calling: ourselves the "Demented Pelt Cult")

In my opinion, all officials have a chip on their shoulder......no matter what sport they officiate. If it is out of your control, don't worry about it. It is obvious you don't like Paul Stewart, or better yet, ECAC officials. Guess what, I hate them too, but I don't believe they have anything against one coach or another.

That must be why Stewart said Klump "used referees like a crutch, like Appert." Because he doesn't have anything against one coach or another.

What the heck is this place?

The defense is going to instill pride this year. Be patient with the offense, they'll find their way eventually. Schroeder and Haggerty are very skilled. The talk of RPI's goaltending being dead in the water was greatly exaggerated. Merriam and Diebold are both very good.

Enjoy the ride folks, it's going to be a good one.

Concur. Also be patient with JL FDude. From the game I saw on Fri., he was knocking on the door and made some awesome passes. He is not a dominate puck possession guy but a finisher. He is going to be good.

I don't hate .. just pointing out. Don't believe SA has a chip on his shoulder...he's getting his guys back. Also officials should not have chips on their shoulders, they should be neutral arbitraters of the game. Calling them as they see them and not interjecting themselves in the action.

I most certainly will enjoy the ride. It was also great to hear you on the radio on Saturday (I had an earpiece while at the game).

Jen and I did that kind of thing back in the 70's-got it all out of our systems. We are now sedate retired professionals who live a straight laced life. We live for a higher purpose. We never do excessive things. You will never meet 2 more conservative and settled people who avoid the party scene. We are complete teatotalers and avoid any medication that could cloud our sensoria. And if you believe even one word of this crap-I have a Bridge nearby in Brooklyn to sell you!! We look forward to seeing you!:D BTW-Hope it will be frigid for Dec 2 in Princeton-Jenny and i would love to be in fur for the game.

Both Ralph and I have been around here a long time. Long enough to see an RPI team go 3-19 and another go 35-2-1. We have seen the biggest ups and the lowest downs. During this entire time (for me it is now 48+ years-not once can i say that the officials have been neutral arbitrators. I call it like I see it-we have rarely gotten the benefit of the doubt. It does happen but when it does it is seen so rarely that we all scratch our heads and wonder if what we just saw really happened. We even dwell on those rare occassions(see George Servinis 1985). I agree completely with those who say that coach SA has been getting the short end of the stick from some of the officials. Just my 2¢

Here's a question though (and I would appreciate input from non-RPIers that happen to view this post): How many actually feel they DO get the benefit of the doubt? Heck, even a team like Cornell that some may feel gets a long straw, Fat Mike was suspended because of his public opinion on officials, and the Lynah faithful looked like they wanted to rip one of the refs a new one on game 3 of that series.

Last year was definitely a special year where some (including me) may have felt that the league was out to get us. Black Friday was set to be when we didn't have any students on campus, several years of scheduling that seemed like insisting on Cornell being the freakout (although we choose when that game is to be played, so it really isn't a very good thing to complain about), all of the phantom called back goals (a couple of good ones in there, not complaining about them), and then topping it off with Mr. Stewart's comments. The most important thing to remember, though, is that it is in the past. It's a new season, and I'm willing to give a fair shake. Whether they wish to take it, who knows. Given the song played by the band prior to the third period, I'm guessing one of them said no.

I have never seen any school's fans say that they consistantly (or even more than half the time) get the benefit of the refs' calls. On tends to remmeber the bad calls more (with the exception of the Servinis non-call as DrD pointed out).

I did note that Mankato fans said that the ECAC were worse than the WCHA refs.

Do you really think it is that ECAC refs are worse, or more that they make calls differently? I don't think anyone will disagree with me that WCHA play is more physical than ECAC play.

Re: RPI 2011-12 Season: Posts on a Message Board

I would say a combinationof the two. IMO they try to call the game by the letter of the rule book and that really isin't done anywhere else. Believe it or not Appert stated on his pre game radio interview that with the exception of a few teams he feels the ECAC is just as pysical as the wcha. I couldn`t believe it.

Not saying any league refs are worse than any others. Just saying that i can go back as far as 1963 and find refs in our league (whether it be ECAC or not) that have decidedly not been neutral in their calls. Fans of other teams may say the same thing-that still does not alter the pervasive feeling that I have had for all these years. I have travelled with the team to a large number of venues and watched teams get what I would consider a home town edge by the officials-I have not seen that in Troy ever. Not saying we did not deserve what we got called for all the time-we used to be known as a team that played 'Hatchet Hockey', but overall there have been such a great number of bad call instances that I cannot ignore it.

I think most teams feel as you do - our team rarely gets the benefit, and usually gets hosed. And we remember the calls that went against us WAY longer then those that went our way.

I didn't say that ECAC officials are worse. I said that it was a comment of MSU fans. I get very few opportunites to watch WCHA officials. I will say that ECAC officials are worse than NHL officials, but that is to be expected.

It seems to me that ECAC officials make random calls at times.

Miami has been 2nd and 12th in penalty minutes the last 2 years, and every call was bull****. The refs hate us ;)

Re: RPI 2011-12 Season: Posts on a Message Board

Did you leave it up as the next song, or pick something else? The conductor at this game was insistent it would be played. Finally a sax did a counter-veto.

I only tried that once. I called Tarantella repeatedly to see how the band would handle it. After maybe 5 failed attempts, I called something else. They played the something else, then a few songs later the band vetoed me yet again and played Tarantella. Towards the end of my time as conductor, I did call Tarantella, and the band actually played it. I think they were messing with me... As the saying goes, "The conductor is just a figurehead."

A. Olin Niles certainly seemed like a figurehead, at least by the time I was at RPI. :D
