Re: RPI 2011-12 Season: Posts on a Message Board

I chuckled when I saw the apparent precision of the numbers. I figured that he first asked five people, and three said we were going, and he wrote 60-40. He then asked three others and got two more to say we are going to make the odds 5 to 3 (or approximately 62-38).

I was told there'd be no math. :D:p

I agree that 9th, maybe 7-9 is where they will finish.
9. Rensselaer (Media: 5th, Coaches: 4th)
Well if the wisdom of the crowds, ie-the rest of the media and the coaches, are right, then this is going to be my Clarkson pick from last year- the team I vastly underrated. That said, has anyone noticed what this team is losing? I agree with Without a Peer, the RPI blog, which keeps tweeting (in a good way) that their offense last year wasn't just Chase Polacek. It was also Tyler Helfrich (21 points) and Bryan Brutlag (7 poinys), both of whom are graduated, along with two other forwards. As a result, RPI returns the least amount of scoring in the league, 56.7% of their scoring last year. It also means someone like Brock Higgs is going to see a lot more attention from defensive specialists. In net, Allen York left for a pro contract with the Columbus Blue Jackets, leaving Bryce Merriam and his career 3.03 GAA. (To be fair to Merriam, he put up a 2.11 GAA in conference play last season. He also only started 3 conference games last year and has 11 starts total.) Defensively, RPI loses two top defensemen in John Kennedy and Jeff Foss. It's unclear to me that RPI can handle these across the board losses. In addition, while RPI were in a three-way tied] for 4th, that means they could have been as low as 6th had tiebreakers not gone their way. With all of these losses, is it really that hard to imagine them slipping a few spots to ninth? It isn't for me.

There's no guarantees because I am bringing up a bump up from juniors to the college game, but I believe some of our optimism comes from what we've seen in our recruits. All of our jawing about changed assists aside, we're looking at players like Jacob Laliberté, Ryan Haggerty, Zach Schroeder, also Curtis Leonard (as you had previously mentioned). They have certainly proven themselves not only in their junior leagues, but also in the exhibition game we recently witnessed. We'll certainly want to look at the next few weeks to get a better gauge of their true capabilities in the college game, but let's face it: That's what makes following college sports fun.

Also, it's not like we aren't returning good talent. Nick Bailen was mentioned in the article, but how about Brock Higgs? If it weren't for his neck injury in Alabama, I believe he would have given Polacek a good run for his money. Yes I did call him for my pick of sophomore slump, but he made some noise in the exhibition.

BTW, just in case there's a misunderstanding, although I may have you on ignore for the time being, I'll take a look at some of your posts here and there. There is a capability to do that on this board.

Booo because I disproved your point, because I didn't "forget" after a week?

First off, one opinion does not "disprove" another opinion.

Second, I don't care about your opinion, I'm still booing you for not giving it to a kid, just as anyone else would be.

Yet more self-appointed experts sleeping on RPI.

I am very enthusiastic that this continues to happen year after year.

Wow. Does anyone know of a place where I can bet the over on a ninth place finish?

Maybe we can get HopelessDad to set the line for the differential between Union and RPI regular-season finish? I'm sure he would be happy to back up his bluster with something tangible, eh?

More seriously, while at first I thought that the Iowa Electronics Markets website might allow you to set up that kind of "bet," upon exploring it further I find that they limit the futures they offer. Nevertheless, here is the link:

Perhaps some enterprising person here can figure out an analogous way to set up a futures market for ECAC hockey, or NCAA hockey for that matter, and run an exchange.

Note that they do use real money to speculate on 'election futures' at the IEM website.
